From the Tidewater region of its Atlantic Shore to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia has some of the most architecturally rich, and perhaps the most historically important, homes in America.

The treasures of American heritage showcased in this volume range in time from the seventeenth century to the twentieth, and include such peerless masterpieces as Colonial Williamsburg's Governor's Palace, George Washington's Mt. Vernon, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, Robert E. Lee's Arlington House, and Stratford Hall Plantation — all presented in new photography commissioned for this book, the first to feature in one place the beautiful houses of some of this country's most influential and renowned citizens.

Each home shown is either linked to a famous American region or event, or is a National Historic Landmark, a Virginia State Historic Landmark, or listed on the National Register of Historic Places or on other landmark registers.

The homes of the discerning Hollywood stars, from Grouch Marx to Leonardo DiCaprio

This book looks at the intersection of celebrity and design, through the case of twenty-five houses designed by great architects for their informed, trend-setting, and extremely famous clients, in Southern California. Included are gorgeous photos of the houses as well as little seen informal portraits of the stars and wonderfully detailed texts that tell the story of these members of the glitterati, touching on film, fashion, architecture, and the everyday lives of legends. Hollywood Modern spans the modern era, from modern homes of the 1930s, through mid-century modern designs, to the present day.

Hollywood Modern touches on the many moods of modernism. From Ed Niles "Johnny Carson House" in Malibu, which creates a ficus tree forest that extends from the garden directly into the house, to the machine-age austerity of Richard Neutra's "Von Sternberg House," (later owned by The Fountainhead author Ayn Rand), to A. Quincy Jones' crisply, elegantly ultramodern Gary Cooper House in Holmby Hills, these houses edit, rearrange and direct our point of view much like the carefully composed version of reality we see in motion pictures. These different styles co-exist as modernism and stand in distinct contrast to the Mediterranean villas and Spanish Colonial manses of early Hollywood.

Appealing and innovative houses that show creativity, ingenuity, and design savvy for all homeowners today.

With striking photographs and compelling stories from its vast home-design archive, the editors of the New York Times’s beloved Home section offer a look at how contemporary homeowners make the most of their living spaces — whether small or stately, rural or urban, historic or cutting-edge — and do it with style. Reflecting the latest and most inventive ideas in home design, the projects express the optimism, resourcefulness, and experimentation of today’s architects, designers, and homeowners.

Included in the book are rustic houses that promote a return to the basics; cottages and cabins that connect with their picturesque and often remote surroundings; small apartments and studios that make creative use of compact spaces; repurposed spaces that offer unique living quarters for the innovative resident; and numerous other house types that demonstrate the many ways we live today. Homeowners, designers, and architects alike will find ideas and inspiration in this diverse collection of homes, each appealing in its own way.

Unique and inviting, these homes are exemplary studies of living at its most seductive and most creative.

There’s No Place Like Home. Step into the world’s most beautiful private abodes

Discover the world’s finest crop of new homes. This dependable global digest features such talents as Shigeru Ban, MVRDV, and Marcio Kogan alongside up-and-comers like Xu Fu-Min, Vo Trong Nghia, Desai Chia, and Shunri Nishizawa. Organized by architect and brimming with crisp photography and plans, the result is a sweeping survey of the contemporary house.

Across small cottages and lavish villas, beach houses and forest refuges, discover the world’s finest crop of new homes. This cutting-edge global digest features such talents as Shigeru Ban, MVRDV, and Marcio Kogan alongside up-and-coming names like Aires Mateus, Xu Fu-Min, Vo Trong Nghia, Desai Chia, and Shunri Nishizawa.

Here, there are homes in Australia and New Zealand, from China and Vietnam, in the United States and Mexico, and on to less expected places like Ecuador and Costa Rica. The result is a sweeping survey of the contemporary house and a revelation that homes across the globe may have more in common than expected.

Among guava trees and abandoned forts in Western India is a sanctuary designed for and by Kamal Malik of Malik Architecture. The House of Three Streams is a sprawling spectacle with high ceilings, verandas, and pavilions, perched atop a ridge overlooking two ravines. A medley of steel, glass, wood, and stone, the house weaves along the contour of the landscape, almost as an extension of the forest.

Encina House by Aranguren & Gallegos, an elegant, sloping structure reminiscent of a gazebo, similarly inhabits its surrounding vista. Ensconced in a pine forest north of Madrid, the lower level is embedded in rock and connected to the upper by a natural stone wall.

Shinichi Ogawa’s Seaside House is an immaculate two-story minimalist marvel in Kanagawa that overlooks the Pacific. Its living area spills onto a cantilevered terrace and infinity pool, almost dissolving into the ocean as one seamless entity.

In Vietnam, Shunri Nishizawa’s House in Chau Doc exudes tropical sophistication with exposed timber beams, woven bamboo, plants, concrete panels, and inner balconies and terraces. Its corrugated iron panels act as moveable walls and shutters, ushering in views of surrounding rice fields.

These homes — along with more than 50 others — are each remarkably distinct in design. They all, however, toe the line between inside and outside, each one symbiotic with its surroundings.

In recent years the lines that define the characteristics of the modern house have lost the severity that distinguished them in the past. Although the uses that a home must fulfil – cooking, relaxation, personal hygiene, interaction with other people, etc. – remain the same as ever, the solutions for tackling them are now very different and diverse. As a result, no specific formula can be established to define how a home should be. This book shows crossfire of examples of international designers, which have drafted houses with many considerations in mind. Adaptation to the terrain and the climate, the budget and the needs of its future inhabitants has been born in mind. As well the home’s three indispensable areas (the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom) have been focused. For example the bathroom is presented in multifarious variations: Either a functional space is apart or it can occupy a privileged spot alongside the garden, with large windows, spread itself out inside the house to such and extent that the bathtub turns into an indoor swimming pool.

With the rapid development of economy and tremendous changes of technology in contemporary China, people are no longer satisfied with the existing living conditions and they raise higher demands towards comfort, variety, selectivity and adaptability. From that point, in addition to ensuring the supply efficiency of houses, it is increasingly important to improve the functional quality in residential space design.

The 'human-oriented' concept pays more attention to building relationship between dwelling space and natural context, satisfying the basic functions of houses and the same time endowing them with a deeper sense. From the perspective of designers, the requirements of clients and developing trend of houses bring more opportunities and challenges for them. The book 'Houses' aims to investigate the relationship between dwelling space and natural context and to summarize the development trend of residential design in future China by collecting projects of renowned local designers.

Each project is illustrated with beautiful images, delicate drawings and a detailed description to showcase the innovative ideas of the designer in a clear and systematic way.

This beautifully illustrated book takes the reader on a journey through a number of outstanding houses designed and built in the California landscape by Berkeley firm WA design.

The firm’s founder David Stark Wilson cites his experiences in nature as the most profound influence on his architecture. In this volume he has chosen to pair images of his architecture beside the images from nature that inspired his designs. The origins of the firm’s work are also deeply rooted in the vernacular buildings of California and this influence is clearly illustrated in this impressive monograph.

Although progressive, the firm’s designs draw heavily on the local vernacular. Ordering principles borrow from the building’s context and often relate metaphorically to the surrounding natural landscape, connecting the building to its site in a meaningful way. Sustainable and solar features are also a crucial component in the firm’s design objectives and are seamlessly integrated with the architecture.
