Urban land is an increasingly precious commodity, particularly in the centre of major cities. Every spare corner of land is in demand, however small, inaccessible or awkwardly shaped. For architects the challenge is to optimize these sites while simultaneously negotiating the web of planning regulations, to create homes suited to today’s lifestyles. Infill profiles 39 innovative and imaginative urban dwellings around the world that fill in gaps left by demolition, or that have been squeezed into plots previously considered unsuitable for development. Each case study is illustrated with photographs, drawings and specially drawn site plans, all accompanied by authoritative commentary. The authors focus particularly on the challenges that each architect faced and how they were overcome.

The volume features approximately 60 exceptionally designed rooms with a special focus on the presentation and interaction of individual design elements such as wood, rock, concrete and surfaces. The book’s extensive illustrations present the individual wealth of details of each room as well as its overall impact, inspiring and stimulating the reader. The concept of utilized materials is crucially important for the esthetic design of a body or a shell. Innovative materials have had a lasting effect on interior design efforts of recent years. Interior design should appeal to all senses, i. e. act synesthetically, to create absolutely new and surprising room ambiences.

One of the most essential commonalities uniting all mankind is the necessity for shelter. In spite of all the differences that age-old differing cultural and societal traditions have wrought across the globe, the archetypal need for housing as a "place of home" remains unchanged as one of the most pressing demands facing humanity. In the face of an ever-tighter woven world the traditional cultural and regional chasms that once generated vastly different residential solutions within individual regions, countries, and continents are invariably being dissolved. As an expression of the common desire for humans everywhere to live in dignity, the houses portrayed here document an ever-increasing commonality in residential architecture worldwide wherein a triumphant renaissance of the ideals of Modernist architecture serves as a common denominator in the creation of exuberant new house solutions. At the same time, regional differences continue to exist, enrich, and invigorate the global discussion on residential architecture.

The most elementary of all the architect's tasks is to provide shelter. Given this age-old adage, it is remarkable to discover just how many residential solutions are being developed in today's architecture world-wide. This book documents a broad range of houses that have been built around the globe in the past ten years. The ca. 200 projects presented span all of the world's continents and hereby provide an extensive overview of the possibilities being explored in an ever tightly woven global community. At the same time, the differences spawned by differing cultural, climatic, regional, and societal backgrounds are examined. This is an essential reference work for all those interested in one of mankind's most pressing themes.

The design of multiple housing – a new building type, especially for growing urban populations – was a major new area of activity for architects at the beginning of the 20th century, and one that continues into the 21st century. The latest title in the successful series Plans, Sections and Elevations, this book features 87 of the most influential modern housing designs of the past 100 years by the best-known architects in the field. Each project is explained with a concise text and photographs and specially created scale drawings, including floor plans and site plans, sections and elevations where appropriate. The projects are organized in six roughly chronological chapters tracing the history of both public and private housing around the world. The detailed drawings allow each project to be analyzed in depth, which, alongside the author’s authoritative text, will make this an invaluable resource for architects and students. As an added bonus, the book includes a CD-ROM containing digital files of all the drawings featured in the book.

Architecture on Florida's Key West reflects the diverse and colorful nature of those who have shaped this remote island's character: the grand classical homes of sea captains from New England, the cobbled-together wooden dwellings of ships' carpenters, the humble but charming cottages of cigar makers from Cuba. Today's equally varied population of artists, writers, and political figures contributes to that heritage by designing interiors and landscape that complement the vibrant tropical location, quirky isolationist tradition, and relaxed atmosphere.

In Key West: A Tropical Lifestyle, author Leslie Linsley presents the true character of this unique American place in twenty-two residences. Engaging anecdotes drawn from interview with homeowners, designers, and architects and lush, full-color photographs reveal the historic and contemporary interiors and gardens. Reflecting the style and personalities of their owners, these house simultaneously respect and extend a distinctive legacy.

Lake|Flato Architects of San Antonio, Texas, is nationally and internationally acclaimed for buildings that respond organically to the natural environment. The firm uses local materials and workmanship, as well as a deep knowledge of vernacular traditions, to design buildings that are tactile and modern, environmentally responsible and authentic, artful and crafted.

Lake|Flato won the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2013, and it has also received the American Institute of Architects’ highest honor, the National Firm Award. In all, Lake|Flato has won more than 150 national and state design awards.

Residential architecture has always been a priority for the firm, and Lake|Flato Houses showcases an extensive selection of landmark homes built since 1999.

Color photographs and architectural commentary create a memorable portrait of houses from Texas to Montana. Reflecting the firm’s emphasis on designing in harmony with the land, the houses are grouped by the habitats in which they’re rooted—brushland, desert, hillside, mountains, city, and water. These groupings reveal how Lake|Flato works with the natural environment to create houses that merge into the landscape, blurring boundaries between inside and outside and accommodating the climate through both traditional and cutting-edge technologies.

The sections are opened by noted architect and educator Frederick Steiner, who discusses Lake|Flato’s unique responses to the forms and materials of the various landscapes. An introduction by journalist Guy Martin summarizes the history of Lake|Flato and its philosophy, and explores the impact of its work on sustainable architecture.
