Pierre Gelis-Didot
ID: 10140
Издательство: Dover

Selected from a very rare portfolio, this volume presents exquisitely detailed engravings of Parisian apartment buildings and mansions of the late nineteenth century. Its 100 plates depict 50 buildings in the richly ornamented Beaux-Arts Classical style. These illustrations are the work of Pierre Gelis-Didot, who is celebrated for his architectural drawings. They depict buildings by such distinguished architects as Jean-Louis Pascal, Albert Walwein, Lucien Magne, Charles Girault, and others.

Full-page illustrations of each facade are accompanied by facing pages with finely rendered architectural details, including floor plans, cross sections, and close-ups of doors, windows, and balconies. Other details include soaring arches, elaborate cornices, decorative trims, and colossal columns. From the boulevards of Saint-Germain, Haussmann, and Montparnasse to the Bois de Boulogne, this volume offers a celebration of residential architecture in the City of Light.

This broad survey of modernism — the most scintillating creative era in Paris — spans all domains: architecture, art, design, entertainment, fashion, film, literature, and photography.

The lives and works of artists in every creative discipline transformed Paris into a crucible of modernity in the first half of the twentieth century. Profiles of eighty-eight influential artists, designers, photographers, architects, writers, and personalities — including Gabrielle Chanel, Eileen Gray, Jean Prouvé, Pablo Picasso, Tamara de Lempicka, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Brassai, Man Ray, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, Walter Benjamin, Josephine Baker, Jean Renoir, Gertrude Stein, and more — highlight the boundless creative energy and optimism that permeated the City of Light at this key historical juncture.

Richly illustrated alphabetical entries with cross-references to related topics are complemented by six thematic essays on cinema, fashion, graphic design, habitation, painting, and urban planning. A portfolio of original contemporary photographs — from the historic center to the suburbs of Paris — reveals traces of modernism in dozens of buildings and their interiors that are rarely open to the public.

Edited by James Sanders, Preface by Nik Karalis, Contributions by Frances Anderton and Donald Shoup and Mark Valliantos
ID: 16450
Издательство: Rizzoli

California, once the epitome of car culture, is now leading the green movement, transitioning away from the internal combustion engine and to some extent the car — and having to rethink how we live, as this extraordinary urban planning manifesto explores.

Drawing together original research, design studies, and cultural essays, Renewing the Dream offers the first comprehensive look at the changes remaking the mobility landscape of Southern California—and the opportunities to reappropriate vast tracts of the city for new uses. Edited by James Sanders and produced with the global architecture studio Woods Bagot, this book explores the forces propelling this shift as well as its controversial impact on Los Angeles, as a city once famed for its car-oriented, low-rise landscape is transformed into a more diverse, more dense, more complex place.

This many-sided portrait offers essays by a distinguished group of writers, designs for the city’s future, and studies of how the new mobility might allow areas now dedicated to parking and gas stations to be reimagined. Rounding out its portrait are historic photographs, maps, Hollywood images, and the artwork of David Hockney, Catherine Opie, Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud, Carlos Almaraz, and stills from La La Land to Chinatown. The book is a thought piece on the future of American cities, with lessons that will carry resonance all around the globe.

Tom Miller
ID: 16281
Издательство: Rizzoli

Beautifully illustrated with line drawings and photographs, engagingly presented, and richly detailed, this charming guide traces the architectural and social history of Manhattan one building at a time. The island of Manhattan has been through remarkable architectural and social change throughout its history. Organized roughly by neighborhoods, this book explores the seemingly never-ending depths of architectural, personal, and social history of Manhattan, building by building. Follow the family feud that led to the construction of the luxurious Waldorf Astoria, or trace the decay of a once proud home to an increasingly humble storefront, delving into the surprising, sometimes scandalous, often touching stories of the people who lived there along the way. Alongside the details about each architect, dates, and styles, author Tom Miller reveals the joys, tragedies, and scandals of those who lived within. In addition to iconic structures, the book includes many off-the-beaten-path buildings that most guidebooks overlook, as well as notable buildings that no longer stand but remain key to Manhattan’s architectural history. Beautifully researched, engagingly presented, and richly detailed, Seeking New York is truly a must-read for anyone interested in the story of New York and how it got that way.

About the Author:

Tom Miller moved to New York City in 1979 from Dayton, Ohio, bringing with him a passion for buildings. He currently holds the rank of deputy inspector within the NYPD’s Auxiliary Police Force. In 2009 he started a blog, Daytonian in Manhattan, which has now reviewed over a thousand buildings, statues, and other points of interest.

An evocative portrait of New York City by more than 40 photographers from around the world

More than 60 million people visit New York City each year. Every single traveller experiences the city in a unique way. There is no such thing as one New York. Streets of New York is a New York photo book that celebrates the Big Apple’s tremendous diversity by bringing together over 40 contemporary photographers and their multiple perspectives on this unique metropolis.

Often drawing on a strong social media presence, each photographer offers her or his personal take on New York’s unparalleled vibrancy, impact, and allure, creating both a rich collection of city photography and street style, and a visual catalogue of New York travel inspirations. Photographs of world-renowned New York landmarks and attractions like the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, and World Trade Center Transportation Hub are interspersed with pictures of New York’s hidden treasures, tucked-away Manhattan charms, and lesser-known, but equally interesting New York City districts — all captured with a present-day attention to detail and a wide-eyed love for the City that Never Sleeps.

At the heart of MENDO is the love of pure design. Before establishing the inspirational concept store and go-to flagship bookstore for style-conscious bibliophiles in Amsterdam in 2002, founders Roy Rietstap and Joost Albronda were accomplished graphic designers with an eye for innovation and entrepreneurship. Thus, a brilliant retail concept was created in the form of the MENDO of today. The collaboration of teNeues x MENDO is a synergy on many levels — a premier international publisher of illustrated books on culture combining with trendsetting designers with a great love for beautiful, asthetically-minded books — housed in a one-of-a-kind global bookstore. If you look closely, you will see that the simple, elegant black walls are actually made of precise stacks of books — an idea that is typical Amsterdam

An unprecedented collection of images from the City of Light. A refreshing update of the ‘classic’ Paris photo book by featuring photographers with a strong internet following

As one of Europe’s most important and vibrant cities for art, fashion, and culture, in general, it is difficult to capture the multifaceted city of Paris from the perspective of merely one lens.
Therefore, Streets of Paris bundles the work of over 40 photographers who roam the thousands of Parisian ‘rues’ to capture multiple, contemporary points of view of this dynamic world capital. The photographers, both Paris natives and international visitors alike, often draw on their strong social media presence. When combined, their independent visual voices show an unprecedented collection of Paris images. Unique views of the city’s famous landmarks like the Sacré-Coeur, the Louvre Museum, and the Eiffel Tower reveal an evocative city portrait. Lively areas overflowing with art and fashion, as well as lesser-known impressions of the city’s banlieues, are all captured with a present-day attention to detail and a wide-eyed love for “la Ville Lumière.”

The story of Permasteelisa, an Italian company behind the facades of some of the most famous buildings in the world.

The great global cities of the Western, Middle Eastern, and Asian world tend to resemble each other more and more. The new buildings of cities such as London, Hong Kong, New York, or Frankfurt are similar, and even the skylines increasingly seem to resemble one another. The fact that there are just a few great architects behind these constructions partly explains this phenomenon.

This book reveals how the work of these architectural talents is also made possible by companies such as Permasteelisa, which offer technological solutions for constructing the most futuristic buildings. Permasteelisa produces continuous external cladding: the skin of skyscrapers, large airports, and current business centers. Drawing on its constant research into technology and materials, it collaborates with large architectural firms to transform an architect’s project into a building. This was the case for the Sydney Opera House, with its futuristic sails; for the Guggenheim in Bilbao and its curved facades conceived by Frank Gehry; and for the scintillating blades of Renzo Piano’s Shard in London.

The book tells the story of Permasteelisa. With the texts by international urban planning scholars and data analysis and georeferencing methodologies developed at the Transnational Architecture and Urbanism Lab (TAU-Lab) of the Politecnico di Milano, it shows how this Italian company’s know-how has allowed it to shape the faces of many contemporary cities such as New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Milan, Hong Kong, and Sydney.

An ideal volume for lovers of Venice and architecture aficionados, combining in-depth history of this singular city with more than 100 color photographs and maps. Of Venice’s many majestic spaces, none is as evocative and significant as the Piazza San Marco. Dial Parrott’s view of Venice is a heroic one. Enhanced by more than 100 illustrations, The Genius of Venice presents the magnificent edifices of the piazza as, in the words of John Ruskin, the "living books of history" of this iconic urban environment.

Author Toto Bergamo Rossi, Introduction by Count Marino Zorzi, Photographs by Matteo De Fina, Contributions by Diane von Furstenberg and Peter Marino
ID: 15855
Издательство: Rizzoli

While Venice is better known for soft light and atmospheric painters, this elegant new volume transforms our understanding of Venetian sculpture and its place in the city’s artistic tradition.

A feast for the eyes and an entertaining, erudite read, this book opens with an illustrated survey of the 120 doges who led the Venetian Republic before continuing with a detailed survey of the incredible array of sculptures and monuments that memorialize them.

Although celebrated for painting and music, Venice has a sculptural tradition that was overshadowed by Florence and Rome. Based on new scholarship, this volume reveals the true magnificence of six centuries of Venetian sculpture. With the oldest works dating to the thirteenth century, these masterpieces fill the city’s churches and include pieces by great masters from the Lombardo family to Antonio Rizzo, Jacopo Sansovino, Alessandro Vittoria, and Baldassare Longhena.

The sculptural marvels of Venice tell the story of a procession of doges—politicians, scholars, conquerors, merchants, and even a saint, Pietro Orseolo — over a thousand-year history. Engaging text highlights the adventurous, eventful, and sometimes glorious lives of these legendary figures, while the newly commissioned photography showcases the grandeur and beauty of a neglected aspect of Venice’s cultural history.

About the Author:

Francesco “Toto” Bergamo Rossi has been the head of the Venetian Heritage Foundation since 2010. Count Marino Zorzi, former director of the Biblioteca Marciana, comes from one of the oldest Venetian families with a doge in their lineage. Matteo de Fina specializes in photographing art, interiors, and architecture. Diane von Furstenberg is a noted philanthropist and celebrated fashion designer, best known for the wrap dress, as well as founder of her eponymous global luxury lifestyle brand now sold in over 55 countries. Martin Gayford
ID: 17377
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A visual journey through five centuries of the city known for centuries as 'La Serenissima' - a unique and compelling story for both lovers of Venice and lovers of its art.

Venice was a major centre of art in the Renaissance: the city where the medium of oil on canvas became the norm. The achievements of the Bellini brothers, Carpaccio, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese are a key part of this story. Nowhere else has been depicted by so many great painters in so many diverse styles and moods. Venetian views were a speciality of native artists such as Canaletto and Guardi, but the city has also been represented by outsiders: J. M. W. Turner, Claude Monet, John Singer Sargent, Howard Hodgkin, and many more.

Then there are those who came to look at and write about art. The reactions of Henry James, George Eliot, Richard Wagner and others enrich this tale. Nor is the story over. Since the advent of the Venice Biennale in the 1890s, and the arrival of pioneering modern art collector Peggy Guggenheim in the late 1940s, the city has become a shop window for the contemporary art of the whole world, and it remains the site of important artistic events.

In this elegant volume, Gayford - who has visited Venice countless times since the 1970s, covered every Biennale since 1990, and even had portraits of himself exhibited there on several occasions - takes us on a visual journey through the past five centuries of the city known 'La Serenissima', the Most Serene. It is a unique and compelling portrait of Venice that will delight lovers of the city and lovers of its art.

About the Author:

Martin Gayford is a writer and art critic. His books include Michelangelo: His Epic Life (Penguin), as well as Man with a Blue Scarf (in which he recounts the experience of being painted by Freud), Modernists and Mavericks, Spring Cannot Be Cancelled (with David Hockney), A History of Pictures (with David Hockney), Shaping the World (with Antony Gormley), and Love Lucian: The Letters of Lucian Freud, 1939-1954 (with David Dawson), all published by Thames & Hudson.
