Monograph of globally celebrated architect, Norman Foster.

Norman Foster is a globally recognised figure in architecture. His agency has created more than 300 projects around the world, many of which have profoundly marked and transformed the cities and landscapes in which they reside.

This new monograph, published in partnership with the Centre Pompidou, presents more than 80 of Foster’s key projects, from the Cockpit (1964), a private house in Cornwall, through to Spaceport America (2006-2014), the world’s first terminal for space tourists, built in the desert landscape of New Mexico. Each project is illustrated with drawings, sketches and photographs, placed alongside insightful text.

The book also features an essay by Frédéric Migayrou, curator of an attendant Centre Pompidou exhibition on Foster; a biography by celebrated architectural critic, Philip Jodidio; and an extensive interview with Foster himself. Foster has also contributed an anthology of six analytical texts, written across the broad span of his career.

_Explores more than 80 of Foster’s projects, with sketches and photographs.

Eran Chen, Paul Goldberger
ID: 17266
Издательство: Rizzoli

This first book to comprehensively consider ODA’s range in architecture, from apartment to building to neighborhood. Projects underline a humanistic philosophy seeking community engagement, social connectivity, and above all to inform and uplift.

Founded in 2007 by Eran Chen, ODA seeks to reconcile the conditions of vertical urban living with quality of life and has established a reputation for mold-breaking designs. Seeking to reorder urban architectural priorities by putting people first, ODA challenges conventional perspectives of dwelling that will, over time, influence life in our cities.

Full of setbacks, cutouts, and terraces, an ODA building invariably has an exciting profile, tending to be sculptural where important to be visually exciting, up in the sky, and plainer where more important to be straightforward, at street level. Building shapes catch the eye but forms are never arbitrary or excessive. Some, like 15 Renwick in Manhattan, as observed by Goldberger, “are … well-behaved, and defer to the street more than show off their shape; others, like Bevel in Long Island City, Queens, … are more striking … but they never come off as excessive, as form for form’s sake.”

With chapters moving from Apartment to Building to Block to Neighborhood and a gatefold that reveals an exciting new project destined to enliven the New York skyline, the book’s message underlines ODA’s fundamental understanding that nothing exists in isolation, and the goal of architecture is not just the making of comfortable and visually pleasing places in which to live, but the making of community.

About the Authors:

Paul Goldberger is contributing editor at Vanity Fair, holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at the New School, and in 1984 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

Eran Chen is Founding Principal and Executive Director of ODA.

Olajumoke Adenowo
ID: 17192
Издательство: Rizzoli

This book showcases the unique vision and work of Olajumoke Adenowo, hailed as "Africa’s starchitect" and Africa's most influential female architect.

Olajumoke Adenowo is a renowned Nigerian architect who heads her own architecture and interior design firm, AD Consulting, which she founded in Lagos in 1994. A gifted student, at the age of 14 she enrolled at Obafemi Awolowo University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours Architecture) by the age of 19, and then completed her Master of Science (Architecture) in 1991.

Adenowo's intense interest in architecture and design emerged from her visits to Europe and throughout the world with her parents as a young child, as well as while living on campus at the Obafemi Awolowo University in the ancient city of Ile-Ife in Osun State, Nigeria, where her parents were professors. Having adopted a global perspective from an early age but firmly rooted in her heritage throughout her career, she is uniquely positioned to directly cultivate the kind of best practice African contemporary architecture that leverages ancestral knowledge and methods from within the continent itself.

Adenowo’s thesis of “Neo-Heritage” envisions a new ideation framework which leverages on African heritage design principles that will contribute to international solutions in the field of architecture.

About the Author:

Olajumoke Adenowo is a multiple award-winning architect who has been described by CNN and The Guardian as "Africa's starchitect”. She has her own boutique architecture and interior design firm, AD Consulting in Lagos, and she regularly lectures on global aesthetics, gender issues, women's empowerment, and African entrepreneurial leadership.

Author Shohei Shigematsu and Jason Long, Contributions by Virgil Abloh and David Byrne and Alice Waters
ID: 14198
Издательство: Rizzoli

The long-anticipated monograph on OMA New York by Shohei Shigematsu and Jason Long is sure to be the design and architecture book of the season. Presenting more than 20 radical architectural projects from a new generation of the firm, this mammoth volume is the first compendium by OMA, since Content and Rem Koolhaas’s S, M, L, XL.

Well into its fourth decade, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1975, remains one of the most influential and successful practices of its kind. OMA describes itself as “a firm operating within the traditional boundaries of architecture and urbanism that applies architectural thinking to domains beyond.” OMA New York, has grown from an American outpost to a full-fledged operation with its own attitudes, contributing to the evolution of the globally acclaimed office. Through a diversity of projects, the firm has transformed our understanding of the city and our evolving relationship with art, fashion, food, sustainability, and other quintessentially twenty-first-century preoccupations.

The works presented here elaborate on OMA’s philosophy even as they expand its portfolio geographically. Featured projects (led by partners Shohei Shigematsu and Jason Long) include residential skyscrapers in New York, Miami, and San Francisco, mixed-use developments in cities from Tokyo to Houston, and projects like 11th Street Bridge Park in the public realm, alongside more intimate spaces such as the studio for renowned Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. Permanent structures, such as Milstein Hall at Cornell University, the new galleries of Quebec’s Musée National des Beaux-Arts, a cultural forum and neighborhood for Faena in Miami, and the expansion of museums such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and the New Museum in Manhattan, contrast vividly with temporary interventions such as the Manus x Machina exhibition at the Met Costume Institute and the sculptural installation of soaring concrete columns for An Occupation of Loss.

In between projects are dialogues with leading policymakers, museum directors, artists, fashion designers, musicians, chefs, and curators — Christopher Hawthorne, Lisa Phillips and Massimiliano Gioni, Taryn Simon, Iris van Herpen, Virgil Abloh, David Byrne, Alice Waters, and Cecilia Alemani — who provide insight onto areas of the firm’s interests and preoccupations beyond the realm of architecture.

About the Authors:

Shohei Shigematsu and Jason Long are partners at OMA, based out of the New York office. Virgil Abloh is an American fashion designer and founder of Off White. David Byrne is an American musician & artist. Alice Waters is an American chef and author.

Jane S. Day, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach
ID: 17223
Издательство: Rizzoli

Palm Beach style is the expression of elegance and romance everywhere evident in this paradise and epitomized in the lives and work of architect John Volk and artist-preservationist Jane Volk.

Together they conjured up much of the magic that now makes the place. The book explores this unique chemistry and the dazzling homes that are the result.

John Volk was one of the “big five” architects of Palm Beach. It was here, during his sixty years of practice, that he was commissioned to design over 2,000 projects, among them the Royal Poinciana Plaza as well as additions and renovations to the Everglades Club. This book is about the Volks, and the part they played in conjuring the spell with which Palm Beach continues to enchant.

Palm Beach, among other things, is its architecture. Red tile roofs and cast stone columns hint of the Mediterranean. Evidence of inspirations from Spain and Morocco abound. After the economic collapse of 1929, the classical architectural orders began to appear on columns and porticos. The Bermuda style and Modernism made an appearance later. Yet there is no one style exclusively associated Volk; here he perfected many styles and his architectural legacy can be found on almost every street.

While this book honors John Volk’s architecture and his enormous impact, it also celebrates Jane Volk’s contribution to Palm Beach and her devotion to protecting the town and its historic character.

About the Authors:

Jane S. Day is an historian and preservationist and author of Rizzoli’s From Palm Beach to Shangri La: The Architecture of Marion Sims Wyeth.
The Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the preservation of the architectural and cultural heritage of Palm Beach, Florida.

Choreographies of Light

Pitsou Kedem’s spatial arrangements evoke a continuing shift of perspective: A recurring element of the Tel Aviv architect’s buildings is the impressive double-height living room that creates a connection between levels. Guided by fundamental principles of minimalism, the studio was involved in a constant pursuit of purity in order to reveal the essence of a space. After years of simplifying materials to the extent of avoiding all distractions, the architects began to add layers of materials as well as spatial layers. This comprehensive publication retraces the past 20 years of the Studio’s practice. Alongside a photographic archive of its built history in Israel, it features Kedem’s drawings and studies of light perforations from his time at the AA School of Architecture, highlighting his fascination for light as the characterizing element that is at the core of his architectural language.

Pitsou Kedem Architects Studio was founded by Pitsou Kedem (*1970) after graduating from the AA Architectural Association School of Architecture in 2000. Operating for two decades, the studio has planned many projects in Israel, and more recently around the world, often characterized by a contrast between simple and clean outward masses, and complex and rich internal sections.

ID: 16367
Издательство: Rizzoli

At the pinnacle of his profession and powers, Christian de Portzamparc is a shining star in the firmament of high design.

Pritzker Prize–winning architect Christian de Portzamparc is renowned for bold yet artful architecture that is at once sensitive to its context while at the same time being novel, adventurous, and frequently exciting. One57, the soaring residential skyscraper in New York, with unparalleled views of Central Park, is perhaps his most famous building in the United States, but his work ranges widely across the globe, from an extraordinary handkerchief puff–shaped boutique for Christian Dior in Seoul to a low-winged arabesque of a building for the wine producer Cheval Blanc to a mysterious temple of the modern for Casarts in Casablanca. This volume, the first major comprehensive book on Portzamparc’s work in more than three decades, is a revelation and a comprehensive survey of the work of one of the world’s most innovative and exciting architects at the height of his powers.

Architecture as Reflective Practice

This publication features projects that the partnership PROMONTORIO developed over the past 30 years. Together they constitute an impressive body of work for various places across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the USA, ranging from city planning, to culture and education, heritage and conservation, commercial and mixed-use, in addition to hospitality and leisure. The idea of a reflective practice, set forth by PROMONTORIO, summons the ability to critically and ethically reflect on its own actions, while engaging in a process of continuous adaptation and learning. Perceived as a kind of "practicing school" for various generations in Portugal, the practice evolved, in both theory and practice, through the idea that deliberate reflection on experience is essential to cultivate a developmental insight on architecture.

Founded in Lisbon in 1990 by Paulo Martins Barata, João Luís Ferreira, Paulo Perloiro, Pedro Appleton and João Perloiro as an experimental practice, PROMONTORIO progressively grew into a multidisciplinary team of 60 architects, planners, landscape architects, interior designers, and graphic designers.

Author Rafael de Cárdenas, Contributions by Felix Burrichter and Jesse Seegers and John Miller
ID: 16494
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first volume on the exciting work by one of the most cutting-edge architects and interior designers working today.

Founded in 2006, Rafael de Cárdenas’s firm Architecture at Large was created after a roundabout route to architecture. His experience as a menswear designer at Calvin Klein and a creative director at the special-effects production house Imaginary Forces led him to study architecture and blend his multidisciplinary background to create spaces that are artful and highly conceptual. He is known for his bold and eye-popping projects spanning commercial and residential interiors, art objects and furniture, and pop-ups.

With four thematically organized chapters treating his most stunning projects from a decade of work in vivid detail, this book is a must-have for those interested in contemporary spaces. From highly sculptural and geometric commercial interiors to some of the most sophisticated homes in Manhattan, de Cárdenas and his firm infuse their work with an energetic spirit that is less about a particular style than it is about a masterful shaping of atmospheres and moods. The book includes stunning photography alongside two insightful essays by thought leaders in architecture and art.

De Cárdenas has been named a Featured Designer for AD France Collector and to the Architectural Digest AD100 list. Felix Burrichter is the creator of PIN-UP, a biannual magazine for architectural entertainment. John Miller is an artist, writer, and musician based in New York and Berlin. Jesse Seegers is a spatial practitioner and associate editor of digital projects at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.

Grant Kirkpatrick, Duan Tran, Mayer Rus
ID: 17282
Издательство: Rizzoli

A highly anticipated monograph of recent houses by a leading California architecture and landscape firm that celebrates sophisticated modern living and represents the pinnacle of the California Dream.

Residing with Nature features one-of-a-kind homes, crafted in sensuous materials and dramatically sited to enhance views, sunlight, and nature in California, Nevada, and Colorado. Grant Kirkpatrick and Duan Tran of KAA Design share their process for creating personal environments that are tailor-made to each client’s unique lifestyle and setting. All the designs inform a dynamic connection to nature that links indoors and outdoors, an extraordinary attention to craftsmanship, an enduring use of local materials, a striking balance between geometry and whimsy, and an exhilarating sense of levitation.

KAA Design’s stunning houses exemplify why so many look to California as the mode of sophisticated modern living. Their houses are inspired by early California modernism and Asian traditions — and an homage to the work of architects like Rudolf Schindler who used a sophisticated, natural material palette. The Strand in Manhattan Beach rises out of a berm of seagrasses; the Tree House is nestled amidst an array of mature cork oaks, rare Torrey pines, and fragrant Southern magnolias, responding to the client’s longstanding connection to the site and their desire of a unique vision. The simple yet sophisticated design integrates geothermal, radiant-floor heating and cooling, PV energy systems, and solar water heating. Multiple views of each house and plan give readers inspiration and ideas for an excuse to daydream.

About the Authors:

Grant Kirkpatrick is the Founding Partner of KAA Design and has been designing houses in California and around the world for over thirty-five years.

Duan Tran is the Managing Partner and a Design Principal at KAA Design. He is a frequent speaker for several media events and an Executive Cabinet member of the Leaders of Design Council.
