About the Authors:

John Ike has been practicing architecture and design for more than four decades. He travels widely, and his aesthetic is influenced by the architectural traditions and regional inflections of the places he visits, particularly Italy, Scandinavia, Mexico, and northern Canada. In 1989, following a formative stint in the office of Robert A. M. Stern, with whom he had studied for his Master of Architecture degree at the Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University, he co-founded Ike Kligerman Barkley. During his thirty-three years with Ike Kligerman Barkley, the firm published two books, Ike Kligerman Barkley: Houses and The New Shingled House. It received numerous awards, including the AIA New York Chapter Award, the DDB Stars of Design Award, the ICAA Julia Morgan Award, and the ICAA Stanford White Award, and it was named to the AD100 and the Elle Decor A-List. In 2023, Ike co-founded his new firm, Ike Baker Velten. As a designer, he has collaborated on the glass furniture line Chroma D with photographer Irene Mamiye. A father of three and an avid hunter and fisherman, Ike spends his spare time working on his mid-century modern residences in New Jersey and San Diego and his loft in Oddfellows Hall, a historic 19th-century ceremonial lodge in Brooklin, Maine.

Mitchell Owens is the American editor of The World of Interiors and a host of @indegaretravel. He was formerly decorative arts editor at Architectural Digest. He lives in New York.

Architecture and interiors photographer Richard Powers has photographed more than 20 books and his work appears regularly in the US and European editions of Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, The World of Interiors, Vogue, and the Wall Street Journal. He lives in the south of France.

About the Authors:

Professor Kenneth Frampton is a distinguished architectural historian and the author of many books, including Renzo Piano: The Complete Logbook and Le Corbusier, both published by Thames & Hudson. He is Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University.

Kengo Kuma established Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990 and went on to become Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Tokyo in 2009. He is the author of several books, including Anti-Object and Kyokai: A Japanese Technique for Articulating Space. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including XS Extreme (Thames & Hudson).

He is the recipient of several distinguished awards and recognitions including an Arnold O. Beckman Fellowship, a Japan Foundation Fellowship, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Cultural Appreciation Prize, and many others. Balázs Bognár is an architect and partner at Kengo Kuma & Associates in Tokyo, Japan, and served as project architect for the "cultural crossing" at the Portland Japanese Garden. Kengo Kuma is a celebrated Japanese architect and principal of Kengo Kuma and Associates. He is a professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Tokyo.

Geoffrey London is Emeritus Professor of Architecture at The University of Western Australia where he is a past Dean and Head of School. He is a Professorial Fellow at The University of Melbourne, an Adjunct Professor at Monash University, a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), a previous WA Chapter President of the AIA and an Honorary Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. For the past decade, they have taught a joint graduate research studio at the University of Pennsylvania. They are the inaugural recipients of the Benjamin Latrobe Fellowship for design research from the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows and have received over one hundred awards for design excellence, including the Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award.

Karl Wallick, AIA, is an assistant professor of architecture at The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. His courses focus on integrating technology and design through artful detailing. Charlotte Perriand (24 October 1903 – 27 October 1999) was a French architect and designer. Her work aimed to create functional living spaces in the belief that better design helps in creating a better society. In her article “L’Art de Vivre” from 1981 she states, “The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living ― living in harmony with man’s deepest drives and with his adopted or fabricated environment.” Charlotte liked to take her time in a space before starting the design process. Her approach to design includes taking in the site and appreciating it for what it is. Perriand connected with any site she was working with or just visiting she enjoyed the living things and would reminisce on a site that was presumed dead.

She is well known for the playful way in which she mixed and superposed materials and styles in most of the furniture she created during her career. Nonetheless, one of the most essential influence on her entire work has been the Japanese craftsmanship that kept on inspiring her.
