The face of the nocturnal metropolis is marked decisively by light, and the number and variety of the light sources is increasing to the point of "light terror." A well-lit urban space can be very inviting, giving residents and visitors a sense of well-being and security. A successful lighting design can also give the city at night an identity of its own and accentuate architectural qualities. In this book, the author embodies her many years of experience as a practitioner and teacher of lighting design. In preparation, she visited ten European cities - including Paris, Brussels, Berlin, London, Budapest, Vienna, and Amsterdam - with different urban situations. This has enabled her to present different planning and design tasks systematically and to illustrate specific solutions. In addition to articulating basic planning rules for the outdoor lighting of buildings, traffic routes, and squares, she presents and elucidates new artificial lighting systems and outdoor lamps with the help of examples.

Living Systems surveys a wide array of innovative approaches to material technologies within the field of landscape architecture. The selected projects and materials exhibit a contemporary demand for technological landscapes and the collaboration between designers, engineers, scientists and ecologists. The book proposes a synthesis between technology and theory, focusing on growth, flow, metabolism, climate, and atmospheric phenomena.

Projects and materials are cross-referenced according to performance criteria, processes, and properties. Each of the 36 international projects and 23 material technologies is presented with drawing details and construction photographs. Descriptions of key processes and adaptive qualities provide an analysis of the various complex systems featured, such as vertical growth structures, flood prevention, stormwater infiltration and erosion control.

Projects featured include works by West8, GROSS.MAX, Weiss-Manfredi Architects, Field Operations, Kathryn Gustafson, and Vogt Landschaftarchitekten.

Eternal, saintly, imperial, maritime, capital, provincial, old, modern, besieged, open, new, colonial, industrial, fortified, touristic, the city can be seen under a number of aspects since its first appearance in Mesopotomia and the Indus valley 10000 years ago. Today half of the people on this planet live in towns. The understanding of the urban environment was gradual and plural. 200 beautiful and significant maps from the Royal Geographical Society show how men have thought of and then represented the city in more and more sophisticated ways. This book includes representations from the Babylonian earthenware tablets to the very precise plans from the middle of the 20th century, as well as paintings and medieval illuminations. No matter how unrealistic some of the maps can be, the reader is taken to cities, boroughs and metropolises throughout history in places as diverse as Jerusalem, Istanbul, Jakarta, Edinburgh or New York. An invaluable historical and cultural testimony.

European architects have established a global reputation for their landscape design. Based on an eclecticism of various exotic styles and considerations for local geological conditions, European landscape architects have successfully established their own characteristics. The book selects the latest inspiring projects located in Europe created by local landscape architects, illustrating the growing trends of landscape design in this region. Projects included range from public and urban parks, commercial and institutional space to private gardens and residential landscapes.

This book highlights radical urban transformation in eight cities spread across continental Europe. The point of departure, and the foundation of European urbanisation, is the Roman colonial town. In every case social dynamics guided the urban transitions in a traceable way, such that it has been possible to deduce the intellectual underpinnings of the contemporary built environments, as featured in these pages. Differing contexts of time and place show the overarching march of European history and related themes at the urban level. Fundamental changes are brought to light. Rotterdam’s West 8 is not only one of the largest, but also one of the best-known and most active design firms working in Europe today in the field of "urban design and landscape architecture." The phrase suggests the firm’s strongly interdisciplinary orientation between landscape architecture and town planning. Its projects are provocative, avant-garde in the typically Dutch manner, and not afraid of contact with popular culture.
