Showcases how, at the outset of the 21st century, classical and vernacular traditions are flourishing as a modern phenomena. This book features the architectural and urban projects from 48 of the most important classical architects in the world.

"New Palladians" showcases how, at the outset of the 21st century, classical and vernacular traditions are flourishing as a modern phenomena, practiced by a wide spectrum of architectural firms, scholars, students, universities and institutions. The 'New Palladians' are dedicated to the highest standards of craftsmanship and design, and to the very best ecological building and sustainable urbanism. The reference to Palladio is to engage him as a model of professional integrity and building expertise that encompasses the dimensions and dialectics of cities, the countryside and nature. The efficient didactic nature of Palladio's work and its contextual adaptability, has favoured the flourishing of Palladian architecture throughout the world. This book features the latest architectural and urban projects from forty-eight of the most important classical architects in the world today.

Alireza Sagharchi RIBA, FRSA is an internationally renowned architect and is the Principal of Stanhope Gate Architecture + Urban Design based in London. Lucien Steil taught as a visiting professor at many institutions around the world.

Norman Bel Geddes Designs America accompanies a landmark exhibition exploring the career of Norman Bel Geddes (1893–1958), one of the 20th century’s foremost theatrical and industrial designers. This companion volume explores Bel Geddes’s life and career in comprehensive detail through nearly 100 projects, ranging from streamlined airplanes, ships, and cars, to stage sets, appliances, and much more. Both the exhibition and the book bring together never-before-seen drawings, models, photographs, and films drawn from the Ransom Center’s Bel Geddes collection. He is perhaps best known for his Futurama display for the General Motors Highways and Horizons exhibit at the New York World’s Fair of 1939–40, which to this day remains a useful model for city planning and design. The exhibition is curated by Donald Albrecht, who contributed the book’s introduction and serves as its editor. In addition to Albrecht, who has written the introduction, twenty scholars have contributed essays.

Off the Grid confronts the ecological and cultural problems associated with the way we get and use energy, and explains how it is possible to live in a beautifully designed home using much less--no matter where your home is located. Our homes are connected by a nearly invisible grid of infrastructure that binds us together. It is a system of electrical poles, wire, substations, hydroelectric dams, telecommunication towers, and water extraction and sewage systems. From within this system we work, play, and raise families. We have also created one of the greatest environmental challenges known to modern civilization. The signs of our impact upon the world can be recognized in the reports of environmental changes occurring across the earth, and they can also be seen in the growing failures of the energy grids across the world as the current system is stressed beyond its capacity. Technologies that can be used to live off the grid (geothermal energy use, wind turbines, photovoltaic arrays, micro hydropower, rainwater collection and reclamation, and more) are explained as author Lori Ryker shows how to choose and incorporate these sources according to geography and climate. Off the Grid beautifully illustrates that this is not just a concept for rural living; examples of homes that are "off the grid" to varying degrees are found in New York City; Ontario, Canada; Stuttgart, Germany; Belmont, California; Pipe Creek, Texas; Clyde Park, Montana; Twin Lakes, Minnesota; Laytonville, California; Venice, California; and New South Wales, Australia. Off the Grid shows how we can take responsibility for our future choices and conveniences now, and proves that off-the-grid living is a concept that can be easily understood and adopted by everyone, regardless of where you live or how much money you make.

With increased attention to sustainability and environmental concerns, landscape architects now lead teams of urban planners and architects in developing new outdoor space and reconfiguring existing designs. As the preeminent landscape architecture firm in the United States, Olin is at the forefront of this movement with completed projects across the country and in Europe. The firm was awarded the gold medal of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the profession's highest honor, in 2006.

Well-known for the restorations of Bryant Park behind the New York Public Library and the landscape of the Washington Monument, Olin is also recognized for the dramatic transformation of a derelict, brownfield site into the vibrant Canary Wharf, now the financial center for all Europe, and for the landscape design of the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles and Columbus Circle in New York. The firm has also designed sculpture gardens for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio.

In dialogues with noted colleagues and collaborators, each of the partners articulates a personal vision and philosophy of landscape and design. Laurie Olin, founding partner, speaks with the poet Michael Palmer, while Susan Weiler reflects on her collaboration with artist Jenny Holzer. Other dialogue participants are Kim Tripp, former director of the New York Botanical Garden; Niall Kirkwood, chair of the landscape architecture department at Harvard; Sean Timmons, founder of Simmons Design Engineering; and Charles Waldheim, a leading proponent of landscape urbanism. Taken together, these conversations provide a unique window into the creative process.

Good design is a good investment—poor quality or unimaginative spaces will not be attractive to children; the play space may not be valued by the local community and may fall into disuse and disrepair.

High-quality, integrated play space design is imperative in helping to attract children and families, and for the playground to become a valued part of the local environment.

This detailed book examines key drivers in best play space designs: it investigates the importance of play, preparations and planning, how to develop a strong design brief, good layout, choosing the right equipment materials for the type of space, and how to incorporate the best natural elements into the play space design.

This strong reference also describes key design issues, such as boundaries and fencing issues, along with standards for major equipment, including platforms, guardrails and protective barriers. There’s also a comprehensive section on hazards and dangers.

The book showcases an international range of projects divided into three major case study themes: play spaces in parks, communities and schools, with each case study illuminated by informative narrative text descriptions, and accompanied by rich, full-color photography, detailed diagrams and illustrations.

Walking and cycling are becoming a fashionable lifestyle both as a low-impact exercise and a healthy means of travel.

There is ever-growing demand for the construction of pedestrian and cyclist paths internationally, and it’s the rate of growth that highlights new challenges, as well as opportunities, for landscape designers. This book showcases several exciting design projects of pedestrian and cyclist paths across a range of environments, from cities to local communities, urban areas to larger national parks.

This book addresses how the issues of connectivity and urban public space are common across different cultural and geographic settings. At the same time, solutions differ in response to the character of individual sites and their context within an urban or natural landscape setting. The highly illustrated projects demonstrate a commitment to creative design to produce new public spaces that are not only functional, but provide opportunities for people to move easily through them and interact with the surrounding urban and natural environments.

The book includes an informative design guide and a set of criteria that should provide strong reference materials in the evolving landscape realm of developing sustainable, green infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

This comprehensive study is a must-have publication for landscape architects, urban design professionals, town planners, students and educators in the urban design fields.

In the post-industrial age, Dusseldorf is increasingly focusing on future-oriented services in fields such as media and communications. Current urban planning reflects this trend, as does the city planners’ theme, “Preserving identity while shaping the future.” Dusseldorf’s planning serves the demands of the New Economy, promotes cultural, educational and scientific facilities, and preserves the city’s characteristic blend of traditional lifestyle, strong business pulse and international flair. Urban planning in Düsseldorf includes outstanding projects on an international scale, such as the Media Harbor, the Airport City and the new fairgrounds. Special importance is assigned to urban planning projects with emphasis on improving the image of the city center, exemplified by the PLATZDA! Program. New developments also include high-quality residential units, as seen in the Heerdter Feld estate. This book, published under the patronage of mayor Joachim Erwin in the series “Plans, Projects, and Buildings,” presents one hundred projects that are currently in planning, under construction, or already completed. It features ample photographs and plans, and provides a kind of snapshot of current architectural developments in Dusseldorf.

Abstract:

Carry forward Regional Context

Exploration of local features and traditional context creates spaces that shows care and respect for people, spreads charm of history and beauty of encounter of the new and the old. Correct treatment for relationship between protection of historical context and new construction can better realize planning that suits local conditions. Close connection of cultural landscape with natural environment creates spaces with new features. Seaming various spaces with cultural context can blend the new and the old into a whole.

Create a Harmonious Neighborhood

With development of cities, the role of community shifts from a place of living to a place that cares people’s well-being. Whether traditional warm family moments can be brought back in life in modern communities attracts wide attention. A harmonious neighborhood not only facilitates life, study and work, but also has a positive impact on community development. Creation of a harmonious neighborhood needs to make behaviors of associating and activity attributes as major factors in planning, build up public facilities, optimize layout of dwellings and strengthen connection of spaces to promote communication among neighbors under one roof.

Promote Value of Commercial Facilities

To optimize layout of commercial real estate, the solution is equilibrium, which refers to balance and compatibility among commercial forms, brands and layouts. Equilibrium contributes to mutual promotion for different markets and categories of commodities. Furthermore, it will enhance all-round development and maximize commercial value.
