In this small, but sharply-pointed book, renowned theorist Sanford Kwinter addresses the sometimes subtle, sometimes brutal transformations that characterized the modernization processes set into motion at the turn of the millennium.

From the strange appearance of the 'Trojan Horse' that was the Centre Pompidou which served as the harbinger and template of the new idea of "Europe", through the dot.com bubble of the late 1990s, to the destruction of the World Trade Center Towers in New York, a new world came into being that design thinking has yet to fully take into account.

The City is here seen not only as the last frontier of human history currently under threat of total eclipse, it is the indomitable form of collective experience upon which one can count as assuredly as one can on death and taxes.

Requiem, to quote from Thomas Daniell's introduction, is first and foremost redemptive: "Kwinter's most negative assessments of the city are driven by a deep commitment to its sublime potentials--a desire to sacralize the most profane and fecund of human creations"

Over the last 10 years, Rome has initiated an extensive process of urban transformation involving important changes in both the city s centre and suburbs. The MenoèPiù competition proposes a system of new parks, squares, schools and buildings in the new periphery. With the participation of several architects from Italy and the rest of Europe, new urban settings and future architectures mark a strategy for the capital's transformation. This book presents 12 of the best projects, including 5+1AA, Labics, Ricci&Spaini, Actar/Nabito, Gianfriddo, Grafton, ecc.

Roof gardens are enjoying a revival. Landscape architects are now being followed by architects, project developers and owners of roof terraces in discovering the advantages of plants on the roof. In each of these locations, designers took up the challenge of the building, the urban environment above the roof-line or the landscape. Each spot is so different that it had to look for a new definition of the roof garden or roof terrace. They have come up with new architectural concepts using water, stone, wood, metal, glass, trees, plants and grass, created new green spaces or achieved astonishing effects up on the roof.

To continue developing existing building types in an intelligent way is a crucial task in the field of residential building. A deeper understanding of the underlying types is indispensable for the success of the individual design, as well as for ensuring that tried and tested structures can be utilized, repeated, and varied in a wide variety of situations.

For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure.

The first volume deals with the various types of the courtyard house, which utilizes the courtyard as an intimate outdoor living space. A presentation of the courtyard as a building block of the city is followed by coverage of the complete spectrum of types - cluster, network, carpet, terraces, etc.

The second volume is devoted to the various types of row house, a particularly widespread form of residential structure. A general discussion of the row as organizing principle - the row as urban building block, linear space, ways of handling corners - is followed by the systematic presentation of the different types.

Within each type, variants are distinguished according to how they organize space, their number of floors, etc. The range of possible solutions is presented in uniform ground plans newly drawn to scale.

Explaining in detail the definition and design process for a real self-sufficient architecture in energy, water and food at the lowest possible price, this book aims to promote the establishment of a new model of architecture, called “integrated architectural model.” which is to substantially improve the design of buildings, educate society and to integrate in the architecture the least amount of technological additives. Similarly, buildings can generate the basic food and water capable of ensuring the survival of its occupants. To illustrate this comprehensive architectural model, we analyze five innovative and visionary projects by Luis De Garrido.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and the technology company HP have developed an international contest with the idea of “self-sufficient city". It is an invitation to reflect on how we will live in the near future in the light of the social, cultural and technological changes in which we are immersed. This publication presents the projects of the 107 finalists between 708 participant proposals. From connected metropolises, eco neighbourhoods, self-sufficient buildings, intelligent homes or any other proposal for a short-, medium or long-term project such as the winning ones: “HURBS” proposed by Sergio Castillo Tello and María Hernández Enríquez from Spain and “WATER FUEL” by Rychiee Espinosa and Seth Mcdowell from the United States.

Sergey Chernyshev (1881–1963), one of the founders of Soviet urban planning, deservedly occupies a special place among the leading Russian architects of the twentieth century. Already a respected architect before the Russian Revolution, his talent also gained recognition in the Soviet era. Chernyshev’s large-scale designs attracted widespread attention – from the 1935 Master Plan for the Reconstruction of Moscow to his work on the restoration of cities such as Kiev, Leningrad, Warsaw, and Berlin. Chernyshev’s designs have achieved global fame and recognition. Even in the dramatic years under the Stalin regime, Sergey Chernyshev sought to embody the concept of an “ideal society” in architecture and urban planning theories. He successfully implemented bold and innovative designs, at the same time managing to adhere to national architectural traditions and remain faithful to his own vision.

Explores the variety of high-rise buildings and the technologies behind them that make them not only effective as the buildings themselves, but also harness the natural environmental factors that make them more ecology and energy efficient.

Small Scale, Big Change focuses on designing and building in underserved communities around the globe. Rooted in the traditions of early Modernism, the work of the architects shown in this book expresses a desire for social change and a belief in the social responsibility of architecture. The projects – often schools, parks, housing projects and infrastructural interventions – are typically the result of close collaboration with members of the community and future users. Sourcebook of Contemporary Urban Design presents more than 300 noteworthy case studies in its 600 pages, the first large-scale book of its kind to showcase a complete and diverse range of structures worldwide. The case studies incorporate many types of urban space projects, indoor and outdoor, making this lushly illustrated, information-rich book an invaluable resource that architects and architectural students will turn to again and again.

Each case study includes a succinct description of the project at hand, listing its name, client, and location and presenting its unique objectives, challenges, and solutions. Every case study also features numerous full-colour photographs and detailed renderings of site and floor plans. Finally, each case study provides a full listing of those involved in the project: the design firm and its participating architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors.

In recent years Russian cities have changed, but the architectural heritage of the Soviet period has not been fully acknowledged. As a result, many modernist buildings have been destroyed, while others have become almost unrecognisable following insensitive renovations.

Russian photographer Arseniy Kotov intends to document these buildings and their surroundings before they are lost forever. He likes to take pictures in winter, during the ‘blue hour’, which occurs immediately after sunset or just before sunrise. At this time, the warm yellow colours inside apartment block windows contrast with the twilight gloom outside. To Kotov, this atmosphere reflects the Soviet period of his imagination. His impression of this time is unashamedly idealistic: he envisages a great civilization, built on a fair society, which hopes to explore nature and conquer space.
