Since the first dissections of corpses, anatomy and art have always been connected.

From Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings to Francis Bacon’s naked figures, artists have always been interested in the representation of the human as a biological being. Today, anatomy is back in vogue in contemporary art following the rebirth of gothic and horror in the entertainment industry.

This book features a celebration of anatomy, flesh, and bone by more than 60 contemporary international artists and celebrities including Damien Hirst, Mark Ryden, Jason Freeny, and Nychos.

About the Author:

Blending pop cultural themes with art techniques reminiscent of the Old Masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, and his work is part of the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Amanda Erlanson is a writer, art collector, and editor of the art blog "Erratic Phenomena."

ID: 17196
Издательство: Rizzoli

The definitive illustrated volume on the work and life of Ann Lowe, a consummate couturier who designed lavish evening and bridal gowns for members of America’s social registry, a Black woman working hard behind the scenes whose important legacy has remained underappreciated — until now.

At the height of her fashion career, Ann Lowe’s luxurious and opulent evening gowns and bridal wear were sold in upscale department stores across the country. At various times Lowe owned salons on Madison Avenue. She made Jackie Kennedy’s wedding and bridesmaids’ dresses, but, upon arrival at the Auchincloss estate on the big day, the butler directed Lowe to enter via the service entrance (she refused). Throughout her lifetime (c. 1898–1981), her major contributions to American style were unrecognized.

Vivid new photography of Lowe’s couture gowns — including lush details of her exquisite handwork and signature floral embellishments — accompany essays that explore the trials and achievements of Lowe’s life, contextualize her work within fashion history, profile Black designers whose work reflects her influence, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at the extraordinary efforts to preserve Lowe’s gowns.

About the Author:

Elizabeth Way is associate curator of costume at the Museum at FIT. Katherine Sahmel is conservator of textiles and Heather Hodge is postgraduate fellow in textile conservation at Winterthur Museum. Laura Mina is conservator of textiles at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. The late Margaret Powell’s master’s thesis, The Life and Work of Ann Lowe, was published in 2012 by the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. Katya Roelse is an instructor in the fashion and apparel program at the University of Delaware.

The interaction between photography and fashion has always been compelling – how can artists balance commercial viability against their own creative vision? Twenty-one portraits of objects from Danish Modernism that remain relevant to this day.

From 1940-80, a group of Danish architects and designers created a series of mass-produced objects that have the quality of archetypes: basic equipment for daily life reduced to their essential and timeless forms. Created at the intersection of craft tradition and industrial production, these items of furniture, lighting, cookware and tableware remain absolutely relevant and a number of them are still in production.

A decade in the making, Archetypes offers the reader illuminating and richly illustrated profiles of twenty-one extraordinary designs that are emblematic of Danish material culture: modest, ethical and sustainable. Chapters on each archetype include biographical information on the designer, their creative processes, and detailed descriptions of the objects.

About the Author:

New York-based architect Michael Sheridan is an internationally recognized scholar of modern Danish Architecture and design. His books on these subjects include Landmarks: The Modern House in Denmark and most recently Room 606: The SAS House and the Work of Arne Jacobsen.

Alastair Duncan
ID: 4637
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

Sumptuously illustrated with over 1,000 illustrations and written by one of the world’s leading experts, Art Deco Complete will be the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.

In the most comprehensive account of the decorative arts of the Art Deco period ever assembled, Alastair Duncan celebrates the rich variety of form and diverse international roots that have made it a perennial favourite of collectors and a constant source of inspiration for designers.

Straddling two World Wars and the Great Depression, ushering in the Jazz Age and the era of the automobile and skyscraper, and shaping everything from the Golden Gate Bridge to the humble desk lamp, the story of Art Deco is the story of our modern world.

In its purest forms, it developed from a characteristically French image of luxury and refinement. Later, modernist European and American designers incorporated metal and plastic in styles described as ‘Streamline Moderne’, but which are now called ‘Deco’. Although Paris was the spiritual home of the movement, Art Deco was a truly global style, with designers from every country in Europe and the Americas inspired by a vast international catalogue of artistic and craft traditions.

The guide begins with essays on the major media of the period: Furniture and Interior Decoration; Sculpture; Paintings, Graphics, Posters and Bookbinding; Glass; Ceramics; Lighting; Textiles; Silver, Metal, Lacquer and Enamel; and Jewelry, each followed by lavishly illustrated in-depth biographies of the major designers and artists working in the medium.

The second half of the book is an authoritative illustrated A–Z listing of all significant designers in the Art Deco style, comprising over four hundred entries.

About the author:

Alastair Duncan was for many years an officer and consultant of Christie’s, New York, and is now an independent consultant on the decorative arts of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is the author of many books on the Art Deco period, including Art Nouveau and Art Deco Lighting, Art Deco Furniture, American Art Deco and Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding.

With over 1000 illustrations in colour and black and white

These radiant images from the renowned 19th-century biologist and illustrator Ernst Haeckel, featuring marine microorganisms, will enthrall fans of his previous collections and garner-renewed attention for Haeckel's unparalleled artistry.

From jewellery designers to scientists, graphic artists to naturalists, the range of people inspired by Ernst Haeckel's illustrations continues to grow. Following up on Prestel's Art Forms in Nature and Art Forms from the Ocean, this new collection features startlingly beautiful images created by Haeckel, who was commissioned to contribute to the report of the HMS Challenger expedition, which circumnavigated the world from 1872-76. The Challenger's achievements were unparalleled, with nearly 5,000 new species discovered and catalogued from the depths of Earth's oceans. Full-page reproductions bring these organisms colourfully to life, drawing readers into a world at once hypnotic and highly ordered. Divided into three sections-Siphonophores, Medusae and Radiolarians-these illustrations display Haeckel's remarkable artistic skill and understanding of the architecture of organic matter. The authors provide a brief history of the Challenger expedition, background on Haeckel's scientific and artistic accomplishments, as well as informative texts on each group of organisms.A guide to the natural world and an inspiration to artists of every stripe, this collection of Haeckel's work is a fitting tribute to a 19th century genius.
