Liam Doona, Avi Steinberg, Christopher Mattaliano, Rachel Federman
ID: 15939
Издательство: Prestel

This book showcases a lesser-known aspect of Maurice Sendak’s oeuvre–his set designs for opera and ballets.

Maurice Sendak is well-known for his acclaimed children’s books, but he was also an avid opera lover and designed a number of sets for opera and ballet productions, among them Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Janáˇcek's The Cunning Little Vixen, Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and an opera by Oliver Knussen based on Where the Wild Things Are. This book brings together over one hundred and twentyfive pieces from among the more than nine hundred in the Morgan Library & Museum’s collection, including preliminary sketches, final watercolors, and cardboard models. Essays in the book discuss the importance of music to Sendak’s work, his fascination with comic strips, movies, mechanical toys, and pop-up books, and the artworks that inspired his stage designs. The book reveals the full breadth of Sendak’s visual work for opera and ballet and highlights his keen sense of humor, his love of art history, and his ability to tell striking stories through his art.

About the Authors:

Rachel Federman is Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Drawings at the Morgan Library & Museum. She received her PhD in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and previously held the position of Assistant Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She has published essays on Bruce Conner, Paul McCarthy, Allen Ruppersberg, and Andy Warhol, among others.

Liam Doona is a freelance theater designer and Head of the Department of Design and Visual Arts at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Ireland, where he also lectures in scenography. Alongside his academic role, he has maintained a practice as a set and costume designer. His work was included in the Collaborators exhibition (2007) at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and can also be seen in 2D-3D (2003) and Collaborators (2007), the quadrennial reviews of British stage design published by the Society of British Theatre Designers.

Christopher Mattaliano was named Portland Opera’s General Director in 2003. He has directed productions for such companies as the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, Washington Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Minnesota Opera, and Portland Opera, among others. He has also taught and directed at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, and Princeton University and served on OPERA America’s Board of Directors from 2005 to 2011.

Avi Steinberg is the author of three books, including The Happily Ever: Travels in the World of Popular Romance, which will be published by Knopf Doubleday in 2020. He is a contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine and the Culture Desk of The New Yorker.

Luigi Serafini
ID: 14046
Издательство: Rizzoli

From the intriguing mind behind Codex Seraphinianus comes this beautifully illustrated tribute to the famed Neapolitan character Pulcinella (or "Punch" as he is referred to in English). This short monograph on Pulcinella is conceived as a extension of the Codex Seraphinianus, an encyclopedia filled with variations and fantasies on a theme. Pulcinellopaedia Seraphiniana contains over one hundred extraordinary graphite illustrations with scarlet accents, some of which are depicted in comic-strip style. Conceived as a musical Suite, it is divided into nine scenes with an intermission. It features the oddly surreal and globally recognized character, whose origins have been lost in the mists of the time. An ancestor of Pulcinella was certainly Maccus, the protagonist of the Atellanae Fabulae, very popular farces in ancient Rome, but it was in the early seventeenth century that the character assumed the name and costume that we all know.

Distinguished by a long nose and typically dressed in white with a black mask, Pulcinella is often depicted in various kinds of misadventures and singing about love, hunger, and money. As he famously did in the Codex, Luigi Serafini, has created Pulcinellopaedia Seraphiniana in a unique language all its own, and has filled it with fascinating and mysterious illustrations that will no doubt prompt devotees to obsessively try to decipher the artist’s intention. Written by Serafini’s imaginative coauthor and alter ego "P. Cetrulo," who represents Pulcinella himself, the book artfully presents the struggles of a rebellious antihero who must come to grips with the challenges of everyday life.

Originally, a book about Pulcinella and his world appeared in 1984, after Serafini’s involvement with the 1982 Carnival of Venice, the first revival of the famous festivity after two centuries of silence. Now more than three decades later, this new edition has been extensively revised and includes a new afterword by the author. Like its predecessor, the original edition became immensely sought after and highly valuable, fetching more than one thousand dollars if book collectors were lucky enough to get their hands on a copy. All fans of Serafini’s work will treasure this volume. Rizzoli will also publish a deluxe limited edition with a signed and numbered print.

About the Author:

Luigi Serafini was born in Rome in 1949. He is an artist with an eclectic background as architect, ceramicist, glassmaker, set designer, and writer. He is best known for the cult classic book Codex Seraphinianus, also available from Rizzoli.

Machine Dazzle, to my mind, [is] a true theatrical genius who has created some of the most inventive costumes and sets I have ever seen. — Hilton Als, The New Yorker

Machine Dazzle is the much-in-demand designer and artist behind popular cabaret, drag, and performance stars such as Taylor Mac and transgender icon Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. For the first time, his over-the-top stage creations, made for himself and others, are collected here alongside stage environments, ephemera, and photos from his career.

In Machine Dazzle’s world, costumes are transformative objects with world-making capacity. The artist’s “queer maximalism” encapsulates a more-is-better attitude to making and creating, which looks to counter elitist notions that spectacle and extravagance are vapid. For him, these associations are embraced as queer for their affirmation of hybridity and the rejection of hierarchies of every kind.

On the occasion of a major exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design, curator Elissa Auther brings together an expansive collection of essays and reminiscences from fellow performers, historians, and cultural critics that consider every aspect of Machine Dazzle’s rich body of work.

About the Authors:

Elissa Auther is deputy director of curatorial affairs and William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design. Mx. Justin Vivian Bond is a transgender singer, writer, performance artist, and activist. Mike Albo is a writer, comedian, and performance artist. madison moore is a cultural critic, DJ, and professor of queer studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. David Román is professor of English and American studies at the University of Southern California. Taylor Mac is a theater artist. Sally Gray is an independent scholar. Kalle Westerling is a theater and performance PhD candidate.

Author Laura Maggi, Photographs by Stefania Giorgi
ID: 16451
Издательство: Rizzoli

Thirteen words, thirteen protagonists, thirteen stories. This special journey crosses different regions and tells of mastery, know-how, emotions, and characters that honor ancient Italian traditions.

Gaggia, the brand that invented espresso machines for bars and homes, wanted to represent Italian creativity in 13 stories. To achieve this, it selected the same number of contemporary artisans, including a blacksmith, a motorcycle restorer, a ceramist, a hatter, a tailor, and a creator of floral sets, and depicted them in the pages of the book through the images of Stefania Giorgi and the words of Laura Maggi.

In this tale, coffee is an often invisible link; it represents the irreplaceable value of reflection, of time rediscovered, of having a break.

About the Author:

Laura Maggi is an independent journalist and curator with extensive professional experience in design, contemporary art, architecture, lifestyle, and travel. Stefania Giorgi belongs to a family of photographers. She collaborates with national and foreign interior design and travel magazines.

Never show everything

"Girls, Gags & Giggles" - this was publisher Robert Harrison's recipe for dishing up the American pin-up to the U.S. male. In the 1950s his girlie magazines sold by the millions, before becoming icons of pulp and trash culture.

These skilfully illustrated girls with their curvaceous forms and inviting lingerie soon overtook America's national dessert, in terms of popularity, and even developed considerable potential as a cultural export during the 1940s. "Never show everything," was always the motto. Smiling prettily at the camera, the models exuded just the right amount of sex appeal without seeming too sophisticated or artful. They were the 'girls next door' whose wholesome attraction soon made one forget the magazines' deliberately trashy presentation. Their rosy complexions and innocent allures still titillate even in an age when far more graphic material is the norm. For everyone who enjoys pin-ups, push-ups and pulp style!

“To look at these pictures is to remember that there was a time when taking off your clothes was a potent gesture, when the mere fact of a naked woman could be thrilling.” National Post, Toronto

Vibrant, bold, and enigmatic. Africa Rising showcases the work of Africa’s young creatives alongside more established artists from the voluptuous continent’s vibrant metropolises.

The African artistic spirit extends far beyond the canvas and studio; a new wave of African creatives is on the rise and making a name for itself in design, fashion, photography, and architecture across Africa and abroad. While the colors, patterns, and crafts are profoundly rooted in African tradition, young designers infuse their creations with a delightfully discordant edge making them contemporary, unique, and truly pieces of African design.

Africa Rising calls stereotypes and archaic clichés into question. A comprehensive portrait of Africa manifests from marrying Peter Mabeo’s furniture made from indigenous wood or Nobukho Nqaba’s body of photographic work that handles the themes of migration and foreignness through the clever use of everyday objects or the publicly-minded architecture of David Adjaye with the up-and-coming threads of Selly Raby Kane’s energetic fashion line or the soundscapes of Spoek Mathambo’s Fantasma that fix Bantu lyrics to computerized beats.

Insightful essays from experts and artisans contextualize each portrait and provide insight into talented pioneers, outstanding projects, and the way craft can be a catalyst for social and economic developments. The volume is co-edited by Design Indaba: a multifaceted design platform that garners worldwide critical acclaim for their annual design conference held in Cape Town. Africa Rising celebrates the way art strengthens and unifies cultures and, most importantly, invokes the multi-faceted richness of Africa.

Explore Africa’s worldwide ripple effect of inspiration, creativity, and artistic community.
