Henry Leutwyler, Gerhard Steid, Juergen Teller, Werner Bartsch, Carl Birkenstock
ID: 18266
Издательство: Steidl Verlag

Celebrating 250 years of family tradition in shoemaking, Old Mills Never Die explores the past, present and future of one of the world’s most remarkable and democratic footwear brands.

From dedicated customers who buy and re-buy their beloved shoes throughout their lives to collaborations with luxury houses such as Dior and Valentino, Birkenstock both sets and transcends trends, offering something for everyone — and for everyone the same: quality, comfort and sustainability.

Old Mills Never Die comprises five books of varied size and design, each reflecting a different aspect of the Birkenstock universe. In “Walk This Way” Henry Leutwyler photographs the little-known treasures of Birkenstock’s archive. In “Factories” Werner Bartsch documents some of the Birkenstock works and their over 6,000 employees who combine the most advanced production technology with traditions of hand craftsmanship. Juergen Teller captures Birkenstocks as the ultimate fashion object on the feet of everyday people in “Golborne Road.” “Graphic Designer” reveals the pioneering graphic art and typography of Carl Birkenstock (1900–82). Finally, the “Book of Birkenstock” is an ambitious timeline of the company from 1774 till today.

Wrapped in a Furoshiki cloth and packed in a wooden box, Old Mills Never Die is the first publication to comprehensively present Birkenstock’s ongoing story and place in cultural history — in its own words, “often copied, never equaled.”

A concise introduction to American street photographer Bruce Gilden, best known for his candid close-up photographs of people on the streets of New York City

Bruce Gilden was born in 1946 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. After taking photography classes at the School of Visual Arts, he embarked on his first major project: recording tourists and pleasure-seekers visiting Coney Island. Gilden is probably best known for his work on the streets of New York, focusing on the city’s characters and outsiders, but he has also spent many years on projects in Haiti, Japan and Ireland. A member of Magnum Photos since 2001, Gilden has taken the genre of street photography and pushed it in new directions, documenting the essence of the people he sees and the social landscape through which they move.

Bryan Adams
ID: 18832
Издательство: Steidl Verlag

This is the long-awaited reprint of Bryan Adams’ first comprehensive monograph of his portrait photography. In the late 1990s Adams became curious about making photographic self-portraits for his album covers, and so chose to pick up the camera himself. This serendipitous decision proved the beginning of a successful photographic career parallel to Adams’ impressive achievements as a singer, songwriter and producer. Exposed is a retrospective of his photography and features portraits of friends and colleagues in the entertainment, fashion and art industries. Including Morrissey, Ben Kingsley, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Louise Bourgeois, Lindsay Lohan and Judi Dench, among many others, the book “exposes” not only unknown facets of his subjects but also the depth of Adams’ photographic faculty.

About the Author:

Bryan Adams, born in 1959 in Ontario, divides his time between music and photography. Adams has photographed for magazines including Interview, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar, and British and German Vogue. In 2003 he founded Zoo Magazine for which he has received a Goldene Feder Award. In 2006 Adams was honored with a German Lead Award for his series of photographs of Mickey Rourke. Adams’ exhibitions include those held at the Saatchi Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in London, and Haus der Kunst in Munich. Steidl has published Adams’ Exposed (2012), Wounded: The Legacy of War (2013), Untitled (2016) and Homeless (2019).

'Treasure the sounds you hear and sometimes even enjoy a little silence.' - Bryan Adams

Dive into the world of conscious hearing with Hear the World, a book by musician and photographer Bryan Adams for the Hear the World Foundation, featuring over 120 portraits by Adams of renowned ambassadors for the foundation. Wim Wenders, Dionne Warwick, Lana Del Rey, Ben Kingsley, Tina Turner, Julianne Moore, John Cleese, Mick Jacker, Cindy Crawford — these are just some of the subjects from the worlds of film, theatre, music, fashion and beyond whom Adams has photographed.

The Hear the World Foundation supports children with hearing loss in low- and middle-income countries and is founded on the belief that all children deserve the chance to hear well and live life to its full potential. Adams began collaborating with the foundation in 2007; now, out of a shared commitment to honoring the importance of hearing, their joint vision has blossomed into this book. With each subject striking their own distinct Hear the World pose, the publication is a collection of individuals united in their support for preserving and cherishing our ability to hear.

Cecil Beaton, Claudia Acott Williams, Hugo Vickers
ID: 17385
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A contemporary look at Cecil Beaton's portraits of the Royal Family and how they helped create the public face of the House of Windsor.

Cecil Beaton: The Royal Portraits looks back in time to tell a very modern tale: the creation of a public image. Offering a fresh appraisal of Beaton's portraits of the British royal family, the book explores not only the finished images but also the sittings in which they were created, revealing Beaton's central role in shaping the public face of the House of Windsor and the ways in which he collaborated with his subjects.

Organised chronologically, from the 1930s to the 1970s, each of the book's four chapters comprises an introductory essay, plates with extended captions, and one or two in-depth analyses of a particular sitting. Throughout, a variety of contextual material - contact sheets, test shots, out-takes, sketches, letters, journals, tear-sheets - helps build a detailed picture of Beaton's working methods, the relationships he developed with his sitters, and how the eventual portraits were received.

Drawing on the Victoria and Albert Museum's unparalleled collection of Beaton's photographs, Cecil Beaton: The Royal Portraits will appeal not only to those interested in the photographer and his work, but also to anyone for whom the distinction between the private world and the public face of the royal family remains a source of fascination.

For almost 50 years, the theme of fashion has been a constant in the work of US artist Cindy Sherman.

Cindy Sherman: Anti-Fashion is the first to focus on this close engagement with fashion and approaches her photographic oeuvre from a new perspective. In so doing, it sheds light on the interplay between art and fashion.

For Sherman uses her numerous commissions from magazines and her collaborations with renowned designers as a constant source of artistic inspiration. This book reveals the subject of fashion as the starting point for the artist’s critical investigation of gender, stereotypes, and our attitude to aging. The wide range of Sherman’s assumed characters highlights the artificiality and changeability of identity, which – now more than ever – is shown to be selectable, (self-)constructed, and fluid.

Text in English and Dutch.

François Leperlier
ID: 18861
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

Claude Cahun (1894–1954), the chosen name of the artist born Lucy Schwob, was best known in her lifetime as a writer but built up a remarkable body of photographic work that only came to prominence after her death.

Politically active and involved with a wide circle of artists and intellectuals, including the Surrealists, Cahun followed her own rules in both life and art. She is best known for her strikingly staged self-portraits, in which she used costumes, makeup and technical effects to tackle themes of identity and self-representation. Her love of symmetry, mirroring, repurposing and retouching was also reflected in her approach to other styles of photography, including portraiture, photomontage and still-life tableaux.

Whether working alone or in collaboration with her life partner Marcel Moore (born Suzanne Malherbe), Claude Cahun was a pioneering figure in the aesthetics of modernity who never stopped crossing boundaries of gender and genre.

About the Author:

François Leperlier is a French writer, essayist, poet, philosopher and art historian, known especially for his work on the surrealist writer and photographer Claude Cahun. He has dedicated a large part of his life's work to the rehabilitation and recognition of Cahun's creative works, having rediscovered her nearly forty years after her death in 1954.

Tomasz Gudzowaty
ID: 11292
Издательство: Steidl Verlag

Tomasz Gudzowaty became established as a wildlife documentary photographer in 1999, when he won the first of his World Press Photo awards in the nature category with a remarkable image of two cheetah cubs just about to take down their first prey. He has since traveled extensively through- out sub-Saharan Africa, amassing thousands of images of elephants, lions, cheetahs, wildebeest, zebras and other species. In 2008 Gudzowaty documented a remote emperor penguin colony in the Weddell Sea, a project he continued through his work on South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Gudzowaty’s wildlife photography is characterized by a technical and aesthetic sophistication that is particularly visible in his depictions of large-scale natural spectacles, such as the annual wildebeest migration in Tanzania or the breeding season on the penguin rookeries. This book captures Gudzowaty’s passion and deep knowledge of his subject: keenly observing both general patterns and minute details, he brings the viewer closer to nature’s inner workings and beauty.

This is the first publication on American artist Curtis Moffat who is known for his dynamic abstract photographs, innovative color still lifes and some of the most glamorous society portraits of the early twentieth century. Moffat was also a pivotal figure in Modernist interior design and furniture. Living in London throughout the 1920s and early ’30s during the era of the “Bright Young Things,” Moffat produced stylish photographic portraits of leading figures in high society, stage, theater and the arts, including Cecil Beaton, The Sitwells, Nancy Cunard, Lady Diana Cooper, Tallulah Bankhead and Daphne Du Maurier.

In 2003 and 2007, Moffat’s daughter, Penelope Smail, generously donated his extensive archive to the Victoria and Albert Museum. This book is drawn from that archive and also includes digital reconstructions of color images from original tri-carbro process black-and-white negatives. It reveals Moffat’s pioneering yet little-known photography in all its depth and beauty.

Widely considered Japan’s most influential and prolific photographer, Daido Moriyama has been challenging conventions of the art form for more than a half-century.

This exhaustive and electrifying retrospective, published in cooperation with the Daido Moriyama Foundation and based on entirely new research, looks at every stage of Moriyama’s extensive career, including his extraordinary images as well as his conceptual contributions to photography.

One of a generation of postwar Japan’s groundbreaking artists, Moriyama has continually established his own visual grammar. This book features more than 190 chronologically arranged images that reveal his constantly evolving career: his early editorial work of the mid-1960s, focused on the American occupation and the experimental theater; his radical experimentation of late 1960s and the 1970s; the self-reflexive photos of the 1980s and 1990s; and his ongoing exploration of cities, among other relevant moments. It also includes more than 400 spreads from Moriyama’s rarely-seen publications, mapping the sources of his visual production. Rounding out the volume are texts by the editor and leading Japanese scholars, a personal essay by the artist, and a full chronology of his life and work. The mystery of the body in motion. The surprise of seeing what seems impossible. And the pure, joyful optimism of it all. Dancers Among Us presents one thrilling photograph after another of dancers leaping, spinning, lifting, kicking — but in the midst of daily life: on the beach, at a construction site, in a library, a restaurant, a park. With each image the reader feels buoyed up, eager to see the next bit of magic.

Photographer Jordan Matter started his Dancers Among Us Project by asking a member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company to dance for him in a place where dance is unexpected. So, dressed in a commuter’s suit and tie, the dancer flew across a Times Square subway platform. And in that image Matter found what he’d been searching for: a way to express the feeling of being fully alive in the moment, unself-conscious, present.

Organized around themes of work, play, love, exploration, dreaming, and more, Dancers Among Us celebrates life in a way that’s fresh, surprising, original, universal. There’s no photoshopping here, no trampolines, no gimmicks, no tricks. Just a photographer, his vision, and the serendipity of what happens when the shutter clicks.

About the Author:

Jordan Matter, a portrait and dance photographer, is the author of the New York Times bestselling books Dancers Among Us and Born To Dance. David Lynch, Kristine McKenna, Stijn Huijts, Petra Giloy-Hirtz
ID: 14586
Издательство: Prestel

New in paperback, this revelatory book features rarely-seen multimedia works by the revered cult filmmaker David Lynch showing how he applies his powerful imagination and visual language across genres.

David Lynch has always been in the spotlight as a filmmaker, directing some of the most iconic movies ever made, but as a visual artist, he is less widely known. Lynch delights in the physicality of painting and likes to stimulate all the senses in his work. This new paperback edition brings together Lynch’s paintings, photography, drawings, sculpture and installation, and stills from his films. Many of these works reveal the dark underpinnings behind Lynch’s often-macabre movies. Others explore his fascination with texture and collage. Throughout, Lynch’s characteristic style — surreal, stylish, and even humorous — shines through. An introduction by music journalist and Lynch biographer Kristine McKenna, along with a thought-provoking essay by curator Stijn Huijts, offers fascinating new information and perspectives on Lynch’s life and career. This book reveals an unexplored facet of Lynch’s oeuvre and affirms that he is as brilliant a visual artist as he is a filmmaker.

About the Author:

Kristine McKenna is an American journalist, critic, and curator. She has written for Artforum, The New York Times, ARTNews, Vanity Fair, The Washington Post, and Rolling Stone Magazine. Stijn Huijts is Artistic Director of the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht in the Netherlands.
