Ghosts, demons, Yokai... This is the nightmarish collection of supernatural beings from Japanese folklore as portrayed in Ukiyo-e masterpieces!

Japanese folklore is a goldmine of terrifying supernatural Yokai monsters, demons, phantoms. A large number of Ukiyo-e woodblock printings created in Edo period (1603-1868) depict these monstrous beings in the illustrations of popular folk tales and horror stories. This book contains 70 Yurei (ghosts), Oni (demons), Kaijin (sorcerers) and Yokai (supernatural monsters) with a basic introduction to each creature s story in Japanese /  English bilingual text.

These phantoms and monsters are described vividly in 120 Ukiyo-e art pieces, all created by great masters such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi and so on, giving readers a clear and terrifying image of what such supernatural figures might look like.

These images have been passed down through the years, and many art genres in Japan today, including manga and games, are heavily influenced by them. This is the best reference book for Japanese art lovers, folk culture lovers, as well as Japanese pop-culture lovers. It also offers fresh ideas for those searching for new inspirations for tattoo art and design.

Volume 1 of Joaquin Sorolla's catalogue raisonné is the first part of the culmination of a project initiated by Francisco Pons-Sorolla and Blanca Pons-Sorolla, which assembles all currently known works by the painter - some 4,000 pieces.

This first volume is dedicated to the collection of the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, Spain

Joaquin Sorolla's catalogue raisonné is the culmination of a project that was initiated by Francisco Pons-Sorolla and Blanca Pons-Sorolla, which assembles all the work of the painter known so far (over 4,000 works). The aim of this project is the publication of five volumes in which the works by Joaquin Sorolla Bastida (1863-1923) will be presented by themes: 1. Sorolla Museum; 2. The Sea and the Beach; 3. Portraits; 4. Landscapes; 5. Composition Works. Within these themes, the works will be presented chronologically, so that the evolution of the painter can be observed in each case.

This first volume of the catalogue is dedicated to the collection of the Sorolla Museum, which houses the largest collection of the artist's works. It displays a comprehensive panorama of the painter's oeuvre through 1,300 pieces.

The project is currently being financed by the Sorolla Museum Foundation, and is being carried out by Blanca Pons-Sorolla, with the collaboration of Teresa Jiménez-Landi and Mónica Rodríguez Subirana. Since the beginning of the project in 1987, a profoundly better understanding of Sorolla's work has been achieved.

About the Author:

Blanca Pons-Sorolla, great-granddaughter of Joaquín Sorolla, is an independent researcher of the artist's oeuvre, and has been working on his catalogue raisonné for many years.

Valencian master Sorolla's Impressionist paintings depict the most beautiful gardens and architecture in Spain.

Like Claude Monet's celebrated plein-air landscapes at Giverny, the series collected in this book represents among the best-loved examples of Joaquín Sorolla's (1863-1923) work, and a window into the Spanish painter's quest to capture the essence of a garden. Described by Monet as "the master of light," Sorolla and his landscapes, formal portraits, and historically-themed canvases drew comparisons to contemporary American painter John Singer Sargent. Sorolla had achieved renown on both sides of the Atlantic for grand scenes of Spanish life when he began a personal series of garden works, presented completely for the first time in this publication.

Painted at the palaces of La Granja and the Alcázar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada, and at the painter's home in Madrid, these Impressionist works allowed Sorolla to apply his signature loose brushwork and training as a photographer's lighting assistant to gardens and the sculptures, architecture, and sitters that frame and animate them. Sorolla depicted reflections in fountains and pools, the sunlight dappling his glamorous sitters, sprays of orange blossoms, and shaded blue-and-white tile as he endeavoured to render the radiant peace of a summer afternoon.

About the Author:

Blanca Pons-Sorolla is the foremost scholar on the work of Joaquín Sorolla and has written and contributed to numerous books, including Sorolla: The Masterworks. She is the artist's great-granddaughter. She was deputy curator of the retrospective exhibition "Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923)" held at the Prado in 2009.

Danzig Baldaev, Sergei Vasiliev
ID: 11740
Издательство: Fuel

Soviets features unpublished drawings from the archive of Danzig Baldaev

They satirize the Communist Party system, exposing the absurdities of Soviet life from drinking (Alcoholics and Shirkers) to the Afghan war (The Shady Enterprise), via dissent (Censorship, Paranoia and Suspicion) and religion (Atheism as an Ideology).

Baldaev reveals the cracks in the crumbling socialist structure, detailing the increasing hardships tolerated by a population whose leaders are in pursuit of an ideal that will never arrive. Dating from 1950s to the period immediately before the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, his caricatures depict communisms winners and losers: the corruption of its politicians, the stagnation of the system, and the effect of this on the ordinary soviet citizen.

Baldaevs drawings are contrasted with classic propaganda-style photographs taken by Sergei Vasiliev for the newspaper Vercherny Chelyabinsk. These photographs portray a world the Party leaders dreamed of: where workers fulfilled their five-year plans as parades of soldiers and weapons rumbled through Red Square.

This book examines both broadly and in minute detail the official fiction and the austere, bleak reality, of living under such a system.

Eisner Award–winning graphic designer Chip Kidd and award-winning photographer Geoff Spear deconstruct the first two iconic issues featuring Marvel Comics’ friendly neighborhood superhero in Spider-Man: Panel by Panel.

Spider-Man first swung onto the comic book pages in August 1962 with the publication of Amazing Fantasy no. 15, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and with cover art by Jack Kirby. Perfect for both lifelong fans and the latest generation of Marvel enthusiasts, the book also includes text by Chip Kidd, Marvel editor Tom Brevoort, historian Mark Evanier (Kirby: King of Comics), and Library of Congress curator Sara Duke. Stunningly photographed by award-winning photographer Geoff Spear, Amazing Fantasy no. 15 and Amazing Spider-Man no. 1 are showcased as you’ve never seen them before ― oversize and up close. This is a panel-by-panel exploration of both entire issues that captures every single detail and nuance of Lee and Ditko’s groundbreaking story, making it a must-have for every comic book collection.

Martha Cooper, Roger Gastman
ID: 15084
Издательство: Prestel

Culled from the extensive archives of one of the most renowned graffiti photographers of all time comes this remarkable collection of previously unpublished images of New York’s graffiti scene in the 1980s.

If you were a graffiti writer in 1980s New York City, you wanted Martha Cooper to document your work — and she probably did. Cooper has spent decades immortalizing art that is often overlooked, and usually illegal. Her first book, 1984’s Subway Art (a collaboration with Henry Chalfant), is affectionately referred to by graffiti artists as the »bible«. To create Spray Nation, Cooper and editor Roger Gastman pored through hundreds of thousands of 35mm Kodachrome slides, painstakingly selecting and digitizing them. The photos range from obscure tags to intimate portraits, action shots, walls, and subway cars painted inside and out. They are accompanied by heartfelt essays celebrating Cooper’s drive, spirit, and singular vision. The images capture a gritty New York era that is gone forever. And although the original pieces (as well as many of their creators) have been lost, these resplendent photos feel as immediate and powerful as a subway train thundering down the tracks.

About the Authors:

Martha Cooper has been a professional photographer for over 50 years. In addition to Subway Art, she has published numerous other photo books. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.

Roger Gastman is a collector, as well as the curator and founder of Beyond the Street, an organization that creates large-scale exhibitions of street art. He is also an accomplished filmmaker and has authored well over 60 books on the subjects of graffiti and street art.

An influential figure in Eastern Europe’s 1960s neo-avantgarde, Stano Filko synthesized Dada, Pop Art, Fluxus, and Conceptual Art into a universalist vision of art and life. Influenced by subjects such as modernist architecture and mathematical algorithms, but also by spiritual transcendence and the cosmos, he designed pneumatic objects and interactive environments, assemblages, text-based works, performances, and happenings that attempted to circumvent state repression. Having fled to West Germany in 1981, Filko exhibited at documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982, and then relocated to New York, where he took up Neo-Expressionist painting, embracing a rainbow-colored chakra system, System SF, that he explored for the rest of his life. Not least thanks to his curiosity, experimental approach, and self-criticism Filko’s works sustain a character of contemporaneity and remain meaningful today.

About thee Artist:

Stano Filko (1937, Veľká Hradná–2015, Bratislava) was considered one of the most influential Slovakian artists from the 1960s until his death. Following achievements as a conceptual artist, he became “persona non grata” as a result of the suppression brought about by the Prague Spring in 1968. After having managed to escape to West Germany in 1981, he relocated to New York in 1982. In 1990 he returned to Bratislava, where he transformed his Snesčenkova studio house into a Gesamtkunst- werk designed according to the principles of his System SF.

In 1997, as George Lucas worked to complete early drafts for Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, he enlisted the talents of some of the greatest storyboard artists of the modern era to illustrate conceptual storyboards that would inform the development of the final shooting script, as well as the finished film. Working from Lucas's ideas for scenes and sequences, these artists produced beautiful drawings that helped lay the foundations for the worlds, characters, and shots of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Together, these conceptual storyboards show early takes on favorite scenes; alternate, unused approaches to character designs and environments; and entirely different approaches to key moments. Like wordless comic books, they have an energy and rhythm all their own that is fascinating to explore.

Now, for the first time, Lucasfilm has opened its archives to present the best of the conceptual storyboards for Episodes I, II, and III. Star Wars Storyboards: The Prequel Trilogy collects the best storyboards from all three films together in one striking volume. Throughout this book, readers will find insight into how these conceptual storyboards helped to contribute both to the creation of the Prequel Trilogy and the expansion of the Star Wars universe.

Praise for Stars Wars Storyboards:

A retrospective of the preeminent Greek-born American artist, who was a pioneer in the use of neon in the realm of fine art.

Prolific multimedia artist Stephen Antonakos (1926–2013) is best known for his resplendent abstract neon sculptures — instantly recognizable for their vibrant colors and crisp geometry. Along with well-known artists Lucio Fontana, Bruce Nauman, Keith Sonnier, and his compatriot Chryssa, Antonakos brought new perceptual and formal possibilities to the medium of neon.

This comprehensive book comprises Antonakos’s diverse output of neon, canvases, drawings, travel collages, chapels, and gold works, all of which reflect an abiding concern with illumination, incomplete geometric shapes, and an almost mystical spirituality that is manifest throughout his oeuvre, from his overtly religious pieces to his playful assembled collages from his trips to Greece. His later works feature neon lights placed behind painted or gold-leaf panels, often bathing the surfaces and the surrounding space in gold halos like Byzantine icons, a tradition that has long fascinated this extraordinary artist.

Author David Ebony provides research on Antonakos as a central figure in the international avant-garde of the 1960s and ’70s. He also discusses the artist’s Greek heritage and legacy, as well as the spiritual and mystical aspects of his later works.

About the Author:

David Ebony is a contributing editor of Art in America and a frequent contributor to Artnet News and Yale University Press online, among other publications.
