The emblem book, which reached the peak of its popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries, presented mysterious allegorical images — rather like those we now find on tarot cards — alongside Latin mottoes. A learned text explained the connection between image and motto, and the lessons each emblem held for the reader’s life. Drawing on sources such as medieval bestiaries and Aesop’s fables, emblem books reflected an enchanted view of nature in which our human lives were intertwined with plants, animals, the moon and the stars. World-renowned natural perfumer Mandy Aftel first encountered emblem books in the course of her researches into antique botanical illustrations, and quickly became entranced. Here she presents 100 emblems from perhaps the finest emblem book, the Symbolorum et Emblematum of Camerarius, originally published in four parts between 1590 and 1604. Aftel has sensitively tinted in watercolour the bewitching circular engravings of the Symbolorum, in which giant hands reach from the sky; lions, bears, and unicorns gambol; and distant spires beckon. The mottoes and explanatory texts are given in translation from the original Latin, along with Aftel’s own commentary. An illustrated introduction illuminates the history and magic of emblem book.

Mandy Aftel, an internationally known artisan perfumer and authority on natural fragrance, is the owner of Aftelier Perfumes and the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents in Berkeley, California. She is often called upon to design and consult for conceptual projects in post-apocalyptic and fantasy settings. Conaway is on the faculty at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. Her course, History of Fashion, is the first of its kind. Geared directly towards entertainment design students, the class explores Gwyn's burgeoning expertise: building cultures for film, television, and gaming from the ground up.

Rebecca Black-Gliko descends from a long line of quilters and has been sewing in some form or another since a very young age. Her devotion to learning led to a degree in illustration as well as studying abroad in Japan and New Zealand. Beki has worked for Laika Studios on the films Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link in both the rapid prototype and costume departments. Living in Oregon with her husband, Raul Ramos, she continues to work on projects that explore and combine a variety of mediums. She is currently working on a stop-motion graphic novel, Oni-san, that combines her love of animation, illustration, and stop-motion. Beki enjoys the challenge of translating a design on paper into a functional final product--whether the end result is digital or physical--and choosing the format that best translates the intentions of the narrative.

Maria Kercher is a visual development artist specializing in material behavior and cultural stylization for animation. She has also worked in design for indie games and illustration for live-action films. Born and raised in Brazil, Maria visited the opera and ballet frequently and participated in dance and figure skating competitions, nurturing a fascination with how costumes are used to enhance performance. Through figure skating, she gained an interest in how countries or people can be represented through simplified shapes, colors, movement, and music. Learning to sew from her mother, she began exploring her fascination through fashion.When her father introduced her to US animation, Maria fell in love with the idea of breathing life into a fictional world and came to the US to study animation. Now based in Seattle, Washington, she is focused on expanding her knowledge of materials and world cultures to better connect audiences to each other.

Blythe Russo is an illustrator and puppet builder living in Ohio. She earned a master's in illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design and is an active member and supporter of the Kidlit community. Blythe made her debut as a children's book illustrator with the counting book, One More Wheel (Macmillan/August 2019). Her favorite stories to tell are those of friendship--that give the reader both the giggles and the warm fuzzies.As a self-taught puppet-builder, she has worked as the lead puppet builder for Madcap Puppets. She has designed and fabricated pieces for a variety of their shows, including The Case of the Kidnapped Backpack, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Pinocchio. She's also been known to teach a puppet-building class every so often.

Katsuya Terada, a.k.a. Rakugakingu ("The Sketch King") is a Japanese illustrator who is well known in the US from his work related to Ironman and Hellboy. He likes to sketch a little everywhere he goes and has done many live drawing events where he absorbs himself in drawing on walls. What is amazing is that he does this without doing any rough drafts. Each of his drawings is done in one shot. His drawing style is heavily influenced by Moebius and Katsuhiro Otomo. Terada is a versatile genius who has worked in many fields ranging from manga and anime to live-action film and character design. His notable works in character design are Blood: The Last Vampire and Virtua Fighter.

Published in conjunction with the landmark exhibition, Tetsuya Ishida: My Anxious Self, at Gagosian New York, this fully illustrated catalog documents more than eighty paintings by the late Tetsuya Ishida and includes new essays by Cecilia Alemani and Diethard Leopold.

Tetsuya Ishida: My Anxious Self accompanies the 2023 survey exhibition, curated by Cecilia Alemani, of more than eighty paintings by the late Japanese artist on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his birth. With works from the Ishida Estate, notable private collections, and the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, Shizuoka City, Japan, Tetsuya Ishida: My Anxious Self represents the most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s work to have been staged outside Japan, and his first ever in New York.  

Over the course of just ten years, Ishida produced a striking body of work centered on the theme of human alienation. He emerged as an artist during Japan’s “lost decade,” a recession that lasted through the 1990s, and his paintings capture the feelings of hopelessness, claustrophobia, and disconnection that characterized Japanese society during this time of rapid technological advancement. Before his untimely death in 2005, Ishida conjured allegories of the challenges to national life in paintings and graphic works charged with a Kafkaesque absurdity.

The catalog contains lavish plate photography, including details, of the exhibited paintings. An extensive essay by Alemani provides essential historical and interpretive context for the work, while an essay by Diethard Leopold examines Ishida’s frequent use of his own face in his paintings. The catalog also features a foreword by Larry Gagosian; an introduction by Michiaki Ishida, the artist’s brother; and a reprint of the short story “The Red Cocoon” (1950) by Kōbō Abe.

Ishida was born in the city of Yaizu, in Shizuoka Prefecture, in 1973, and died in Tokyo in 2005. Gagosian presented the first exhibition of Ishida’s work outside Japan, in Hong Kong in 2013.

Kōbō Abe (1924–1993), considered one of Japan’s most influential postwar novelists, is also known for his short stories, plays, and film scenarios. Cecilia Alemani, an Italian curator based in New York, is the Donald R. Mullen Jr. Director and Chief Curator of High Line Art, the public art program presented by the High Line in New York. Michiaki Ishida is the older brother of Tetsuya Ishida. Diethard Leopold, born in Vienna in 1956 to a family of art collectors, continues to live in the Austrian capital where he works as a curator at the Leopold Museum and writes opera librettos in the style of Japanese Noh plays.

Art is constantly evolving, inviting experimentation, and, in today’s digital age, uses artificial intelligence to create entirely new realities. Data as a tool of expression is used by artists as an equal partner to break new ground at eye-level, while at the same time redefining the concept of art to revolutionize the world of design. This volume focuses on the esthetics and creativity of a new generation of designers who are using algorithm-supported tools along the vertical, from graphic design to 3D animation, kinetic objects and real-time visuals, to robotics and spatial installations, as well as hybrid approaches between digital and analogue. Deftly crafted dissectable female wax models take centre-stage in this disquieting volume for fans of the macabre, the ghoulish and medical history

Beneath the original Venetian glass and rosewood case at La Specola in Florence lies Clemente Susini’s Anatomical Venus (c. 1790), a perfect object whose luxuriously bizarre existence challenges belief. It – or, better, she – was conceived as a means to teach human anatomy without the need for constant dissection, which was messy, ethically fraught and subject to quick decay. This life-sized wax woman is adorned with glass eyes and human hair and can be dismembered into dozens of parts revealing, at the final remove, a tranquil foetus curled in her womb. Sister models soon appeared throughout Europe, where they not only instructed the specialist students but also delighted the general public.

The Anatomical Venus is a celebration of these female wax models and reveals their evolution from wax effigy to fetish figure and the embodiment of the uncanny. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is one of the most iconic figures of twentieth-century art, a highly enigmatic personality who not only altered the definition of art but also left in his wake a vast and staggeringly complex record of his daily activities.

The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, the definitive record of the artist's paintings, sculptures and drawings, cover some 15,000 works produced by Warhol between 1948 and 1987. Also included is an incredible array of rarely published source material, including newspaper scraps and movie star publicity stills that inspired Warhol's boundlessly fascinating life and career.

The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné was initiated in 1977 by Thomas Ammann. The editors Georg Frei and Neil Printz began primary research in 1993 and have been advised throughout the project by the distinguished curators and art historians Kynaston McShine and Robert Rosenblum. Experts from the Andy Warhol Foundation personally examined the vast majority of Warhol's works and began a thorough review of his archive, which at his death consisted of some 1,500 cardboard boxes, flat files, and trunks filled with source material, memorabilia, correspondence and junk mail.

The editors examined works in museum conservation facilities and discussed them with conservators, submitted works for review by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, and interviewed Warhol's assistants and colleagues to assemble a customized database of works unparalleled in Warhol scholarship. All of their findings are documented in this unprecendented project.

Each annotated catalogue entry includes the works title, date, medium, dimensions and present owner, followed by a record of inscriptions, provenance, exhibitions and literature. Related works are linked by general introductory texts that explore historical circumstances, shared themes and studio practices. Supplementary figures to the texts illustrate source materials that Warhol appropriated for his works: newspaper articles and advertisements, soup cans and publicity stills, as well as related drawings, works by other artists, and studio and exhibition views. Volume 1 includes classic and much-prized Warhols such as the Campbell Soup paintings, images of the iconic figures of Marilyn, Liz and Elvis, and early self-portraits.

About the Authors:

Georg Frei is a curator, art critic, and editor who has been affiliated with Thomas Ammann Fine Art AG in Zurich since 1988. Previously he wrote art, dance, and theatre criticism for several Swiss newspapers and magazines. For the Thomas Ammann gallery he has organized more than a dozen exhibitions and edited the accompanying catalogues on such artists as Picasso, Cy Twombly, Max Beckmann, and Willem de Kooning. For the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, he was the guest curator of the exhibition 'Andy Warhol: Series and singles, 2000-2001'.

Neil Printz is an art historian with a focus on twentieth century American art. He is currently the editor of the Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné for the Isamu Noguchi Foundation in New York, and Professor of Art History at Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey. From 1977 to 1983 he was the director of the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York. Dr. Printz has contributed and edited articles for several journals and museum publications, including The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas; the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn; the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt; and the St. Petersburg Foundation for Culture and Art. He was Research Curator at The Menil Collection from 1983 to 1991.

The fourth volume of this highly praised, definitive reference to Andy Warhol’s (1928–1987) extensive artistic production

The 607 paintings and one sculpture documented in Volume 4 of The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné were produced during a period of less than three years, from late 1974 through early 1977. In September 1974, Warhol changed studios, moving across Union Square from the sixth floor of 33 Union Square West to the third floor of 860 West Broadway. Like Volumes 2 and 3, Volume 4 is identified with a new studio, where Warhol continued to work for a decade, until he moved into his last studio at 22 East 33 Street on December 3, 1984. Volume 4 may be seen as the first in a series of books associated with one studio that will document an enormously productive ten-year period in Warhol's oeuvre from the mid seventies to the mid eighties.
