This book is the exhibition catalogue for UKIYO-E 2020, an exhibition held in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum from June 23 to September 22, 2020.

This exhibition has great significance because, for the first time ever, masterpieces from the Ōta Memorial Museum of Art, Japan, the Ukiyo-e Museum, and the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Foundation, museums that are reputed to be the three great collections of ukiyo-e in Japan both in quality and volume, were showcased together. The exhibition catalogue features 450 carefully selected ukiyo-e prints from the 17th to 19th centuries, offering superb coverage of the world's ukiyo-e masterpieces.

This book will not only become a timeless keepsake of a historic exhibition but will also be extremely valuable as the premier source covering the complete history of ukiyo-e.

Ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world") is an art form that originated in the metropolitan culture of Edo (Tokyo) in the early seventeenth century and involved collaboration between artist, carver, printer and publisher. Printed on fragile paper using a technique of woodcut or woodblock printing, the early black and white designs soon gave way to delicate two-colour prints and then to multicoloured prints. Favourite subjects were portraits of beautiful geisha and courtesans, popular kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, erotica, scenes from nature, historical subjects and even foreigners in Japan.

Ukraine’s overlooked modernist buildings are under threat from development, decommunization and war. Photographer Dmytro Soloviov has crossed Ukraine documenting them to form the most comprehensive publication available on the subject.

What does Ukrainian Modernist architecture look like and why isn’t it better-known in the west?

Photographer and architectural tour guide Dmytro Soloviov is fighting to preserve the disappearing modernist heritage of his native Ukraine.

These innovative buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avant-garde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war.

From masterpieces such as the Kyiv Crematorium and Salut Hotel, to previously undocumented examples like the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station, Soloviov has traversed Ukraine photographing the exteriors and interiors of these important buildings and their monumental art (mosaics, stained glass and sculptures). While the nation’s attention is consumed by more existential matters, he has documented the unique identity of one of the least catalogued periods of Soviet architecture, his images forming a singular record of an unexpected and rapidly disappearing legacy.

An introduction by renowned architecture critic Owen Hatherley, complete with historical images, cements these buildings in a cultural and political context. With over 120 examples across 240 pages, this publication is the most comprehensive available on the subject.

Dmytro Soloviov is a Kyiv-based Ukrainian architecture photographer and researcher documenting modernist art and architecture. His lifelong mission is to preserve modernist heritage and promote its value. Figuration is one of the oldest art forms, but it continually evolves, along with our changing understanding of human identity. The artists featured here often source imagery from the Internet, and draw on aesthetics developed in Internet-first channels. Digital techniques and affordances are incorporated into rendering processes with traditional media: brushstrokes are more precise, lines are sharper, and color is more highly keyed. In these works, expressionism is located more in the composition than in the paint handling.

About the Authors:

Alba Cappellieri is Full Professor of Jewelry and Fashion Accessories Design at Politecnico di Milano, where she is Director of the International Master’s in Jewellery and Fashion Accessories and the Master’s in Fashion Design, and teaches Brand and Product Management at Milano Fashion Institute (under the consortium with Politecnico di Milano, Bocconi University and Università Cattolica).

From 2013 to 2016 she taught Design for Innovation at Stanford University. Alba Cappellieri is a member of the Scientific Council at the Van Cleef & Arpels School of Jewelry Arts in Paris and an advisor with the Creative Academy of the Cologni Foundation in Milan. She was appointed Ambassador of Italian Design for Italian Design Day in Osaka in 2017, in Sydney in 2018 and in Baku in 2019. Since 2014, she has been Director of the Museo del Gioiello jewelry museum in Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, Italy’s first museum exclusively dedicated to jewelry.

The history of the VanhaerentsArtCollection began in the 1970s, when a young Walter Vanhaerents laid the foundation of his now famous collection with works by Andy Warhol. Much has happened since then, but the focus on new and provocative art, often considered radical at the time, remained. Vasily Kandinsky became the pioneer of abstract art; he was a co-founder of the Blauer Reiter, an art theorist and an influential teacher at the Bauhaus. When he abandoned his promising career as a lawyer in favour of art at the age of 30, no one could have guessed that a few years later he would play a decisive role in determining and revolutionising twentieth-century art.

What the art critic Will Grohmann wrote in 1924 about Kandinsky in the historic series Junge Kunst, reflects current opinion at the time about the path Kandinsky had chosen towards abstraction, which was regarded as both irritating and bold. However, it was not just his radical views about art that polarised people; the charismatic painter also provoked them with his personality, prompting admiration and repudiation in equal measure. It illuminates the principal milestones in Kandinsky’s artistic and private life, providing an insight into his legacy and focusing in particular on his years at the Bauhaus, where he taught together with artist colleagues like Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger.

This is the first comprehensive book on Venetian mosaics of the nineteenth century. It illustrates work by both the Salviati Company and the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company. A carefully researched work, Venetian Glass addresses the revival of the art of Venetian mosaic making in the mid-nineteenth century and discusses the complicity of both Antonio Salviati and Sir Austen Henry Layard in that revival. It is a comprehensive work, illustrating Salviati's earliest surviving mosaics, the 1860 mosaic decoration of the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore and continuing through his company's last commission, the Stanford Memorial Church in Palo Alto, California.

She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2005 and was named the most powerful woman in fashion by Forbes magazine in 2012 She is International Ambassador for Venetian Heritage Foundation. Peter Marino, FAIA, is the principal of Peter Marino Architect PLLC, the New York–based architecture firm he founded in 1978. Known for his residential and retail work for the most iconic names in fashion and art, his award-winning work includes large-scale commercial, cultural, and hospitality projects. He is Chairman of Venetian Heritage Foundation and on the board of directors for International Committee of L’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs.

Federica Sala is an independent curator. She edited the book Minimal/Baroque on the Italian artist Gianluca Pacchioni and has authored various publications on the history of Italian design.
