Anton Pössenbacher (1842–1920), cabinet-maker to the Bavarian court in Munich, was head of one of the largest late 19th-century German makers of luxury furnishings. His furniture, especially those for King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1871–1886), represent German Historicism at its zenith. Pössenbacher created almost all the furniture for the royal apartments at Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein. Intricately carved and lavishly upholstered in gold brocade and dazzling embroidered pictures, these furnishings are highlights in the sumptuous interiors of Bavarian castles. Made to the specifications of an exacting monarch, these masterpieces of the cabinet-maker’s craft have lost nothing of their original fascination.

One of Pössenbacher's clients was King Charles I of Romania, for whom he designed an elegant palace library in Bucharest (1887). Pössenbacher’s clients also included industrialists, merchants and landed gentry, whose town houses and manors he provided with entire rooms.

The present book introduces the full range of furniture by Anton Pössenbacher viewed in their historical context. Numerous new photographs of the interior decoration of the Bavarian royal castles and hitherto unpublished designs for private commissions as well as a scholarly catalogue which also incorporates all relevant invoices from the ledgers kept by the cabinet of Ludwig II make this a standard work on the luxury furniture of Historicism.

Futurism's place in art history is as ambivalent as it is important. Their frenzied, almost furious, canvases, are as remarkable for their macho aggression as they are for their radical experimentation with brushstrokes, texture, and colour in the quest to record an object moving through space.

Inspired by the development of Cubism, the Futurist movement was founded in 1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, along with painters Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, and Gino Severini. The school, which celebrated technology and the mechanical era, was comprised of painters, sculptors, designers, architects, and writers. Motion and machines were two main themes of this movement, which attacked the bastions of establishment and sparked controversy by its glorification of war and support of Fascism. Experimenting with movement, and speed, and abstract light and colour, the Futurists developed approaches and techniques that were revolutionary at the time, and in retrospect, one can see that the Futurists influenced other avant-garde art movements, most notably Russian Constructivism.

After initial successes within the Impressionist circle, he broke with Vincent van Gogh and subsequently - when private difficulties caused him to become restless - embarked on a peripatetic life, wandering first through Europe and finally, in the search for pristine originality and unadulterated nature, to Tahiti.

The paintings created from this time to his death in 1903 brought him posthumous fame. In pictures devoid of any attempt at romantically disguising the life style of the primitive island peoples, Gauguin was able to convey the magical effect that both the landscapes and life of the natives - their body language, charm and beauty - had on him. Wearying of his reputation as a South Sea painter, Gauguin finally determined to return to France, but died of syphilis on the Marquis Islands before his departure.

The author:
Ingo F. Walther (1940-2007) was born in Berlin and studied medieval studies, literature, and art history in Frankfurt am Main and Munich. He published numerous books on the art of the Middle Ages and of the 19th and 20th centuries. Georges Seurat (1859–1891), a man of consistently proper disposition, was called “the notary” by his painter colleagues, and yet he was a trailblazing avant-garde artist. No other visual theme so well illustrates the tremendous innovations in Seurat’s paintings and drawings as the focus of this volume: the figure in space. The artist’s dense weave of pencil strokes cover the paper, making his indeterminate, floating motifs either stand out or disappear, while distinct light and dark contrasts surround and accentuate the figures. In his paintings, Seurat transposed his subjects into his technique, Pointillism, as well as into his innovative compositions. In later pieces, he even repeated and varied human forms within a single work. For his increasingly geometrical visual composition, which subordinates the individual elements to a system, he earned the admiration of the Bauhaus.
