This truly global and visually stunning compendium showcases some of the most breathtaking pieces of street art and graffiti from around the world.

Since its genesis on the East Coast of the United States in the late 1960s, street art has travelled to nearly every corner of the globe, morphing into highly ornate and vibrant new styles.

This unique atlas is the first truly geographical survey of urban art, revised and updated in 2023 to include new voices, increased female representation and cities emerging as street art hubs.

Featuring specially commissioned works from major graffiti and street art practitioners, it offers you an insider’s view of the urban landscape as the artists themselves experience it.

Organized geographically, by continent and by city – from New York, Los Angeles and Montreal in North America, through Mexico City and Buenos Aires in Latin America, to London, Berlin and Madrid in Europe, Sydney and Auckland in the Pacific, as well as brand new chapters covering Africa and Asia – it profiles more than 100 of today’s most important artists and features over 700 astonishing artworks.

This beautifully illustrated book, produced with the help of many of the artists it features, dispels the idea of such art as a thoughtless defacement of pristine surfaces, and instead celebrates it as a contemporary and highly creative inscription upon the skin of the built environment.

About the Authors:

Dr Rafael Schacter is an anthropologist and curator from London. He co-curated the ‘Street Art’ exhibition at Tate Modern, London, in 2008. He has written for a variety of publications and has lectured on Independent Public Art around the world. His ethnography, Ornament and Order, is based on an ongoing engagement as well as more than two years’ in-depth fieldwork with some of the world’s most important Independent Public Artists.

Working across art-making and academia over three decades, Lachlan MacDowall is a scholar of graffiti, street art and digital culture, best known for pioneering research methods that mix genres, images and data. As a writer and photographer, he has pioneered new methods to register the complexity of graffiti and street art, including its rise as cultural heritage, challenges to documentation and photographic practices, the uses of bio-social paradigms, the analysis of data-rich environments and its connection to white supremacism and the alt-right.    He has published widely on the history and aesthetics of graffiti and street art, including in his most recent books Instafame: Graffiti and Street Art in the Instagram Era (2019) published by Intellect Books and the University of Chicago Press and (with Kylie Budge) Art After Instagram: Art Spaces, Audiences, Aesthetics (2022) published by Routledge. His work has been translated into French and Italian.   He is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the MIECAT Institute in Melbourne, Australia and a Senior Research Fellow (Hon) in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne.

Lively and informative, The World Atlas of Tattoo is a superbly illustrated and compelling reference book that, through examining the meeting point between tattoo artists and their personal understanding of their environment, presents a well-informed and nuanced account of what has become a widespread art practice. A colossal expedition into the mind of Tim Burton through over 200 pieces of rare and unpublished behind-the-scenes materials

From Beetlejuice to Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Alice in Wonderland and beyond, Tim Burton has made an indelible mark on cinema across horror, drama and fantasy films with his uncanny, whimsical style. Since his youth, he has created a thematic repository of popular culture, comics, fairy tales, Old Hollywood films and more, the elements of which he intersperses into his movies.

The major, immersive exhibition at the Museo del Cinema in Turin, and its corresponding catalog, honors Burton’s unique vision and artistic output. Divided into nine thematic sections, the catalog features over 200 examples of rarely or never-before-seen original artworks spanning Burton’s entire lifetime: including early sketches from his childhood, paintings, drawings, photographs, concept art, storyboards, costumes, moving-image works, maquettes, puppets and life-size sculptural installations. This archival material honors Burton’s signature style but also reveals his appreciation of the work of previous generations, including the drawings of Edward Gorey and Charles Addams, the horror films of Vincent Price and Japanese monster movies. The World of Tim Burton creates an autobiography told through his creative process, tracing the singular visual imagination of a multidimensional postmodern artist.

Tim Burton (born 1958) grew up in Burbank, California and studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts. Fired from Disney after making Frankenweenie, Burton was approached by Paul Reubens to direct Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, which became his first major hit. Bringing the life and works of the great painter to life, Kandinsky explores the extraordinary output of one of Russia’s most well-known and influential artists. This book follows his artistic development, from the early folk art inspired by his native Russia, via his involvement with both Der Blaue Reiter (‘The Blue Rider’) group and the Bauhaus, where he taught for several years, to the later abstract paintings that are so recognizable today.

A complex and intriguing character, Kandinsky trained as a lawyer before abruptly turning to art at the age of 30. Although known internationally as the ‘Father of Abstraction’, this was a concept over which he anguished for years, before embracing it in his later work.

Both in his writings and in his paintings, Kandinsky’s influence has been enormous. He, in turn, was influenced by many different movements, from Art Nouveau to Symbolism and Surrealism. This book charts his artistic progress and is a stunning of an exceptional artist.

Bringing the life and work of a truly unique artist to life, Van Gogh is a comprehensive guide to one of the most unconventional and highly original artists of the nineteenth century.

Perhaps the most famous artist in the world, Vincent Van Gogh is perceived by many as the ‘mad’ artist, the man who painted in a frenzy or simply the tormented soul who cut off his ear. His artistic genius is often overshadowed by those who see his paintings as mere visual manifestations of his troubled mind. Whilst in part this may be true, in reality, his innovative and unique artistic style was of enormous importance to a host of artists who followed in his wake. Even when openly influenced by his predecessors or contemporaries his art remained identifiably his own, developing a distinctive style that failed to be accepted by the art-buying public in his own lifetime.

From his earliest watercolours depicting the plight of rural Dutch peasants, through his attempts to be accepted by the Parisian avant-garde, right up to his final paintings of the Auvers countryside, every aspect of his life is celebrated in this beautiful reference book.

An authoritative book published in collaboration with Christie’s, featuring photographs of the Bergé Saint Laurent collection in situ, complete with estimated value information and final auction prices.

In February 2009, 733 pieces from Pierre Bergé’s and Yves Saint Laurent’s art collection - one of the world’s largest private collections - was auctioned off in a record-breaking sale of the century.

Modern paintings, baroque bronzes, antique silverware, statues, cameos, and minerals comprise this diverse collection that furnished the pair’s two luxurious residences in Paris, and included major works by Picasso, Brancusi, Matisse, Mondrian, in addition to furniture by the Art Deco masters Eileen Gray and Jean Dunand. Many works sold for prices far exceeding the highest estimates.

The five-volume catalog published by Christie’s for the event sold out before the end of the auction, leaving collectors and art connoisseurs the world over empty-handed.

This new book features one hundred of the most important pieces from the collection with detailed commentary by Christie’s experts. An introduction by Christie’s vice president François de Ricqlès revisits the intense three-day auction at the Grand Palais. An appendix includes images of the works sold, accompanied by their estimated values and final auction prices.

Publication coincides with the auction of the collection from their Château Gabriel property in November 2009.

Polynesian Pop. How Tiki became an American dream

Dive into one of the most colorful pop culture phenomena of mid-century America. In this handy edition gathering hundreds of images and ephemera, urban archaeologist Sven Kirsten takes us on a journey through Tiki history, from the first Pacific island exploration to Hollywood jungle fantasies and elaborate temples built to celebrate Tiki as the god of recreation.

Urban islands and bamboo hideaways set the stage for a pop culture phenomenon like no other. In mid-century America, the imaginative appeal of Tiki penetrated fashion, music, eating, drinking, and architecture.

In handy Bibliotheca Universalis format, Tiki Pop traces the development of Tiki as romantic vision and cultural appropriation. Follow Tiki from James Cook's first Pacific Island expeditions, through Gauguin's exotic paintings, Hollywood jungle fantasies, and elaborate temples erected to celebrate Tiki as the god of recreation. With hundreds of images, Tiki the pop icon unfolds from its earliest, enthusiastic beginnings to its spectacular downfall in the dawning awareness of the Western world’s colonial misdeeds.

This book is the culmination of the extensive research of Sven Kirsten, urban archaeologist, Tiki sage, and author of earlier TASCHEN investigations, The Book of Tiki and Tiki Modern, which first recovered the figure of Tiki from obscurity. In his widely lauded graphic style, Kirsten places venerable ancient godheads next to their Polynesian pop counterparts, movie posters next to matchboxes, comic strips next to Robinson Crusoe illustrations. The result is at once a visual feast, a piece of cultural history, and a tribute to a very particular vision of paradise.

The author:

Sven Kirsten is a cinematographer and urban archaeologist. It was his love for visuals that inspired him to collect and photograph the remnants of the forgotten culture of Polynesian pop in America, leading him to identify the Tiki as its icon. As a hunter and gatherer of lost artifacts and ephemera of this phenomenon, he began to see the pattern of a unique art form, and decided to publish his findings in the Book of Tiki in September 2000. Four books later, the cult of Tiki has made a spectacular comeback.

Tim Burton: Designing Worlds is the official catalogue for the Design Museum exhibition opening in October 2024, as well as the first publication to explore the relationship between Tim Burton’s artistic creations and the world of design. The reader will be invited into an examination of what is now broadly referred to as the ‘Burtonesque’, exploring his iconic style and the impact his unique design aesthetic has on broader visual culture.

The catalogue will unpack Tim Burton’s distinctive visual language, exploring the intersection of gothic, carnivalesque and fantastical elements that define his cinematic masterpieces. Insightful essays by design experts and film critics, interspersed with images featured in the exhibition, will offer a deeper understanding of the director’s creative process, making this catalogue an homage to the role that design practice plays in the hauntingly beautiful worlds he creates.

"One advantage I think is my design sense. When you’re drawing, every element, every line, makes up what it is; and there is a feeling of that when I think about a shot." – Tim Burton
