A wonderfully illustrated book that celebrates the vinyl lifestyle and the legend of the record!

And it's still spinning, the good old vinyl record. As persistently as its demise was prophesied, the vinyl record outlasts all technological trends: vinyl collectors, DJs, music fans - all are loyal to it - and love this book of photographs. The history of the vinyl record is documented in over 200 colour and black-and-white photographs, spiced with vinyl knowledge about the record press, sound furniture, record shops and record cafés. Art legends such as Andy Warhol shaped cover art, LPs such as the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" became coveted, highly traded collector's items, and many a scandalous cover made the record a cult object in the first place. If there is a top 5 list for vinyl fans, this outstanding illustrated book is right at the top!

Cult and cultural history around the black disc: collectors' items, cover art & co.
Over 200 photographs delight record collectors and music lovers alike.

Mount Fuji has been a source of inspiration and awe since ancient times, and artists have been reproducing its likeness since at least the 14th century, as it became a key motif in all aspects of Japanese culture.

The 19th-century Ukiyo-e woodblock prints of important artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige continued this reverence, creating series of beautiful images of landscape and society, with the mountain ever-present. With the slight relaxing of Japan's isolationist policies, artists discovered Western art and exploited its styles and perspectives, and, in turn, Western artists from Monet to Van Gogh were influenced by the bold and distinctive print style, which filtered into their work. This gorgeous new book discusses the fascinating history of Fuji as featured in these prints, and reproduces numerous examples of the stunning and timeless artworks, some in their complete series.

Visual Storytelling covers all major components of creating powerful images including lighting, camera functions, composition and storytelling. However, the main focus of the book is not just creating compelling visuals, but more importantly creating images that inform and move the audience. Images carry emotional weight and Visual Storytelling teaches readers how to harness these emotions to maximize the emotion of the story, while minimizing the amount of dialogue necessary.

What makes Visual Storytelling unique is that it not only covers the theoretical concepts of filmmaking but also the technical elements necessary to achieve the emotional outcome. This combination of theory and practice helps to create well-informed and skilled filmmakers.

About the Author:

Morgan Sandler is a professor of Digital Film Production at the University of La Verne in Southern California. Although he teaches a wide array of classes, he specializes in film production and theory. His love of visual storytelling and creating powerful images guides his teaching and curriculum as does his passion for education. Previously, he helped design the Digital Cinematography program at California State University, Los Angeles where he also served as an adjunct professor. He also previously served as the Course Director of Cinematography at The Los Angeles Film School, where he taught for 10 years. The survey also features an engaging and informative introduction by Yuval Etgar, an internationally renowned expert in the area.

The 69 expert nominators include: Cecilia Alemani; Iwona Blazwick; David Campany; Raphael Chikukwa; Patrick Elliott; Max Hollein; Hettie Judah; Christine Macel; Roxana Marcoci; Duro Olowu; Scott Rothkopf; Russell Tovey; Zoe Whitley; and Heidi Zuckerman.

Walton Ford, Bill Buford

Bestial Tableaux. Walton Ford’s sinister wildlife scenes in an updated edition

At first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly-detailed watercolours of animals recall the prints of 19th-century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear. A closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the ‘operatic’ quality of traditional natural history.

In this stunning but sinister visual universe, beasts and birds are not mere aesthetic objects but dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troupe of monkeys wreaks havoc on a formal dinner table; an American buffalo is surrounded by bloodied white wolves. In dazzling watercolour, the images impress as much for their impeccable realism as they do for their complex narratives.

First available as a signed and limited volume, this updated edition of Pancha Tantra is the most comprehensive survey of Ford’s oeuvre to date, with 40 new works, more than 120 additional pages, and a new essay by the artist. It features dazzling details, an in-depth exploration of his visual universe, a complete biography, and excerpts from his textual inspirations: from Indian folktales and the letters of Benjamin Franklin to the Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini and Audubon’s Ornithological Biography.

Also available in an Art Edition limited to 100 copies, each with a print signed by Walton Ford

The artist:

Walton Ford, born 1960, studied filmmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design, but soon realized he was a painter. For the last 20 years, he has been creating large-scale narrative watercolours. His work has been widely exhibited, including solo shows at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

The author:

Bill Buford is an author and New Yorker staff writer, as well as the founding editor of Granta, which he edited for 16 years. His books include Among the Thugs and Heat: An Amateur’s Adventures as a Kitchen Slave. He lives in New York City with his wife and two sons.

In this official centennial history of the greatest studio in Hollywood, unforgettable stars, untold stories, and rare images from the Warner Bros. vault bring a century of entertainment to vivid life.

The history of Warner Bros. is not just the tale of a legendary film studio and its stars, but of classic Hollywood itself, as well as a portrait of America in the last century. It's a family story of Polish-Jewish immigrants-the brothers Warner-who took advantage of new opportunities in the burgeoning film industry at a time when four mavericks could invent ways of operating, of warding off government regulation, and of keeping audiences coming back for more during some of the nation's darkest days.

Innovation was key to their early success. Four years after its founding, the studio revolutionized moviemaking by introducing sound in The Jazz Singer (1927). Stars and stories gave Warner Bros. its distinct identity as the studio where tough guys like Humphrey Bogart and strong women like Bette Davis kept people on the edge of their seats. Over the years, these acclaimed actors and countless others made magic on WB's soundstages and were responsible for such diverse classics as Casablanca, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Star Is Born, Bonnie & Clyde, Malcolm X, Caddyshack, Purple Rain, and hundreds more.

It's the studio that put noir in film with The Maltese Falcon and other classics of the genre, where the iconic Looney Tunes were unleashed on animation, and the studio that took an unpopular stance at the start of World War II by producing anti-Nazi films. Counter-culture hits like A Clockwork Orange and The Exorcist carried the studio through the 1970s and '80s. Franchise phenomena like Harry Potter, the DC universe, and more continue to shape a cinematic vision and longevity that is unparalleled in the annals of film history. These stories and more are chronicled in this comprehensive and stunning volume. Copyright © 2023 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

The first collection of Makura Kurama's art.

The world of Makura Kurama is full of darkness and beauty. The owners, guests, neighbors, and other characters that appear in the antique shop suffer from grief, fear, or pain in their minds. The gothic-style costumes and motifs, such as skeletons, dolls, corpses, taxidermy, natural specimens, and of course love, lends a dark, fantastical atmosphere to the stories. But these stories never become incurable tragedies.

Makura Kurama's refined brushwork and the sense of hope, of finding light in the darkness, always bring a redemptive element to the stories.

This book is the first art collection of Makura Kurama's work and includes short stories, comics, and illustrations. Even those who know Makura Kurama's work will be fascinated by these stories, which are never as despairing and painful as they first seem as they end in happiness. Why not ring the bell of a peculiar antique shop and see for yourself?

About the Author:

Makura Kurama is an up-and-coming creator who became an instant star upon the release of the short story comic The Peculiar Antique Shop: Plague Doctor and Mrs. Antlers on Twitter in 2018.

This important addition to our understanding of art history’s masterworks puts some of the world's most famous paintings under a magnifying glass to uncover their most small and subtle elements and all they reveal about a bygone time, place, and culture.

Guiding our eye to the minutiae of subject and symbolism, authors Rose-Marie and Rainer Hagen allow even the most familiar of pictures to come alive anew through their intricacies and intrigues. Along the way, we travel from Ancient Egypt through to modern Europe, from the Renaissance to the Roaring Twenties. We meet Greek heroes and poor German poets and roam from cathedrals to cabaret bars, from the Garden of Eden to a Garden Bench in rural France.
