The 1940s ushered in an era of musical experimentation and innovation at the Walt Disney Studios. For this volume, author Didier Ghez has unearthed hundreds of enchanting images—from early sketches to polished concepts for iconic features—by five exceptional artists who shaped the style of the Studio's animation during this period of unbridled creativity. Gem Identification Made Easy is the first and only book that explains in non-technical terms how to identify diamonds and colored gems, and how to separate natural gems from imitations, treated stones, synthetics, and look-alikes.

The book's approach is direct and practical, and its style is easy to understand. In fact, with this highly accessible guide, anyone can begin to master gem identification. Includes over 150 photographs and illustrations, over 80 in full colour!

Using a simple, step-by-step system, the authors explain how to properly use essential but uncomplicated instruments to identify stones, what to look for gemstone by gemstone, and how to set up a basic lab at modest cost. Three of the instruments are inexpensive, portable, pocket instruments that, when used together, can identify almost 85% of all precious and popular stones.

The key to avoiding costly mistakes and recognizing profitable opportunities is knowing both what to look for and what to look out for.

Gem Identification Made Easy will help you:

- Open your eyes to the types of treatments, imitations, synthetics, look-alikes, and fakes in the gem market today.
- Learn how to tell the difference between them. Quickly spot:
--- Synthetics, including synthetic emeralds and diamonds
--- Filled diamonds
--- Diffused "blue" sapphires and "red" rubies
--- HPHT-treated diamonds
--- ... and much more!
- Determine how to spot the newest "composite" imitations.
- Learn how to identify recently discovered gems such as “Mandarin” garnet, red “emerald,” and North Carolina's chromium-rich emeralds.
- Discover new treatments such as surface coatings to create “fancy color” diamonds and improve or change the color of many gemstones.
- Know when to seek help from a professional gemologist or lab.
- Become more professional in your business or hobby.

Andrey A. Tarkovsky, Hans-Joachim Schlegel, Lothar Schirmer

Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A monograph on Andrey Tarkovsky, Russian filmmaker, writer, film editor and film theorist of extraordinary influence and cinematic vision

Andrey Tarkovsky was the most important Russian filmmaker of the post-war era, and one of the world’s most renowned cinematic geniuses. He directed the first five of his seven films – Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror and Stalker – in the Soviet Union, but in 1982 defected to Italy, where he made Nostalgia. His final film, The Sacrifice, was produced in Sweden in 1985. Tarkovsky’s films are characterized by metaphysical themes, extended takes, an absence of conventional dramatical structure and plot, and a dream-like, visionary style of cinematography. They achieve a spiritual intensity and transcendent beauty that many consider to be without parallel.

This book presents extended sequences of stills from each of the films alongside synopses and cast and crew listings. It includes reflections on Tarkovsky’s work from fellow artists and writers including Jean-Paul Sartre and Ingmar Bergman, for whom Tarkovsky was ‘the greatest, the one who invented a new language.’ Extracts from Tarkovsky’s own writings and diaries offer a wealth of insights into his poetic and philosophical views on cinematography, which he described as ‘sculpting in time’. The book also reproduces many personal Polaroid photographs that confirm the extraordinary poetic vision of a great artist who died aged only 54, but who remains a potent influence on artists and filmmakers today.

About the Authors:

Andrey A. Tarkovsky is the son of filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.

Hans-Joachim Schlegel is a film historian and the editor and translator of the writings of Sergei Eisenstein and Andrei Tarkovsky.

Lothar Schirmer is a German publisher and art collector.

Contents List:

Essay by Andrei Tarkovsky Jr: The Closed Time • A Tarkovsky Biography • An Introduction to the Films by H. J. Schlegel • Essays on Tarkovsky • Private Photos and Polaroids: Russia

From such cult hits as Raising Arizona (1987) and The Big Lebowski (1998) to major critical darlings Fargo (1996), No Country for Old Men (2007), and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), Ethan and Joel Coen have cultivated a bleakly comical, instantly recognizable voice in modern American cinema. In The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together, film critic Adam Nayman carefully sifts through their complex cinematic universe in an effort to plot, as he puts it, “some Grand Unified Theory of Coen-ness.” The book combines critical text — biography, close film analysis, and enlightening interviews with key Coen collaborators — with a visual aesthetic that honors the Coens’ singular mix of darkness and levity. Featuring film stills, beautiful and evocative illustrations, punchy infographics, and hard insight, this book will be the definitive exploration of the Coen brothers’ oeuvre.

About the Author:

Adam Nayman is a contributing editor for Cinema Scope and writes on film for The Ringer, Sight and Sound, Reverse Shot, and Little White Lies. He has written books on Showgirls and the films of Ben Wheatley, and lectures on cinema and journalism at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University.
