Ubiquitous in the music world, Fender® guitars and amplifiers are also icons in popular culture, their shapes and sounds instantly recognizable. Authoritatively written and lavishly illustrated, Fender 75 Years is the officially licensed anniversary celebration of the company and its legendary instruments.

Originating in Leo Fender’s modest radio and amplifier repair shop in Fullerton, California, Fender Musical Instrument Corporation went on to become the world’s preeminent name in musical instruments. Today, Fender’s guitars, amplifiers, and script logo are recognizable even to those with only a casual interest in music.

From Fender’s first instrument — a 1946 lap steel guitar — to Leo Fender’s groundbreaking early six-string guitar designs like the Esquire that set the standard for the electric guitar explosion to follow, author Dave Hunter traces Fender’s entire history to the present. All the innovations and landmark models are here, as well as legendary players who became synonymous with Fender instruments across musical genres.

In addition to the instantly recognizable Telecaster® and Stratocaster®, Hunter examines Fender’s legendary offset guitars like the Mustang®, Jazzmaster®, and Jaguar®, and such lesser-known models as the Marauder, Coronado, Bronco™, and more. The Jazz Bass® and Precision Bass® also feature, as do Fender’s acoustic guitars and workhorse amplifiers like the Bassman®, Twin Reverb®, and Princeton®, to name a few.

Along the way, readers get in-depth scoops on the relationships dozens of players have enjoyed with Fender: rock ’n’ roll pioneers like Hank Marvin and James Burton; classic-rock icons like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton; blues legends Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Buddy Guy; alt-rock gods J Mascis and Kurt Cobain; more recent guitar heroes like Courtney Barnett, beabadoobee, and H.E.R. …the list goes on. In addition, Hunter explores the work of the award-winning Fender Custom Shop and the guitars produced there.

Illustrated throughout with rare images from company archives, Fender 75 Years treats readers to rare behind-the-scenes views of the shop floor throughout the years, studio imagery of the guitars, rare period advertising and brochures, and performance images of Fender players.

It’s the definitive look at the Fender’s first three-quarters of a century and a must-have for every guitar enthusiast.

A rich overview of the fascinating life and career of internationally renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), this volume features the artist’s complex and diverse paintings, a series of thoughtful essays about her and her oeuvre, and a detailed illustrated chronology.

As a woman artist who confronted many taboo subjects — and herself — head-on, Kahlo produced groundbreaking work that shifted the terrain of the art world. In these pages, new high-resolution photographs present the most accurate reproductions ever of her visionary artworks, including many ravishing details. That astounding fidelity and the detailed analysis of the artist’s life and process combine to make this a must-have book for Kahlo’s legions of fans worldwide.

Readable and illuminating, Frida Kahlo is illustrated with rarely seen paintings from private collections alongside iconic favorites, including many of Kahlo’s striking self-portraits and her sensual still lifes. Archival and personal photographs, insightful descriptions of her works, and numerous excerpts from her intimate diaries and letters provide context and imbue Kahlo’s work with additional meaning. Authors Héctor Tajonar and Roxana Velásquez — the world’s foremost authorities on Frida Kahlo — deftly untangle the many threads of Kahlo’s complex persona. Kahlo was a charismatic force. Fiercely political and proud of her Mexican heritage, she maintained a dense network of romantic and platonic relationships, including two marriages to fellow artist Diego Rivera. But her childhood illness and the tragic accident she suffered as a teenager left her physically vulnerable. Understanding that duality is key to fully appreciating Kahlo’s extraordinary work. With this deeply researched, stunningly designed volume in hand, readers can do just that.

About the Author:

Roxana Velásquez is the director of the San Diego Museum of Art and previously served as director of the Palace of Fine Arts (2007–2010), the National Art Museum (2004–2007), and the San Carlos National Museum (1997–2004) in Mexico. She has garnered international recognition as an expert on Frida Kahlo and for organizing major exhibitions, including Frida Kahlo 1907–2007 as well as National Homage (which attracted a record-breaking 420,000 visitors) at the Palace of Fine Arts in 2007.

This art book showcases depictions of hell in Japanese art from the 12th century to the 19th century.

It features a large collection of masterpieces presented with details and enlargements from the works. These images are of aesthetic, thought-provoking, frightening and wickedly funny.

The single-volume collection focuses primarily on works designated as Japanese National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties and features the various depictions of hell by prominent artists such as Kazunobu Kano, Nichosai, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka and Kyosai Kawanabe. It is a must-see for artists, illustrators and anyone interested in representations of hell. This volume also features the 19th-century woodblock-printed edition of Ojoyoshu (The Essentials of Rebirth in the Pure Land) written by the medieval Buddhist monk Genshin (942 - 1017) and is accompanied by modern bilingual text.

Written in 985, this influential Buddhist text is often compared with Dante's La Divina Commedia (La Divine Comedie/The Divine Comedy). Its brutal scenes of underworld realms display the suffering and cruelty one might endure as a consequence of harmful acts committed in life or the judgement by the Ten Kings of Hell. These ideas of hell in Ojoyoshu have played an enduring role in inspiring Japanese Buddhist paintings and other subsequent texts, particularly from the medieval period onward, and are vividly portrayed in the painting featured in this volume.

Essays from historians of both Japanese art and Buddhism are also included in bilingual text.

A beyond-cool look at the world of high-end audio design for passionate collectors, obsessive audiophiles, and design fans

At a time when sales of vinyl records have hit a 25-year high, and analog technologies are providing the kind of extraordinary audio experiences that our increasingly digital world has started to remove, Hi-Fi is essential reading. This unique book explores just how, when, and why the world fell in love with the look, feel, and sound of top-of-the-line audio equipment.

Hi-Fi traces this fascinating evolution from the 1950s to today (and tomorrow), taking readers right up to the current renaissance of all things analog and the emergence of cutting-edge designs for die-hard audiophiles.

About the Author:

The founder of ultra-high-end audio equipment company Audioarts in New York City, Gideon Schwartz has been credited with conceiving and creating synergistic music systems for some of the most exacting creative individuals in the world. Schwartz is a former attorney who retired from law to pursue his passion for music and audio equipment. He has authored Hi-Fi: The History of High-End Audio Design and Revolution: The History of Turntable Design and has passionately promoted audio as a distinct expression of compelling industrial design and cultural impact and significance. His books highlight generations of audio equipment, while imbuing in the reader a sense that audio serves as an important conduit for the musical arts.

His work has led him to create home music systems for the likes of record company boss and Johnny Cash, Metallica, U2 and Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Rick Rubin;  along with fashion house Supreme CEO James Jebbia; art collector and founder of the Maharam textile company Michael Maharam, in addition to many other high-profile individuals in the commercial and creative arts worlds.

His knowledge of the international hi-fi world is without equal. If you want to learn more about the quest for perfect sound, you need to read Gideon Schwartz.

Hiroshige was one of Japan’s most talented, prolific and popular artists. Famed for his landscapes, he was also a great observer of nature with a visionary approach to colour and brushwork. His legacy continues to influence and inspire artists today.

Over a career spanning four decades, the prolific Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) produced thousands of landscape and nature prints, hundreds of paintings commissioned by the samurai elite, as well as many illustrated books. His work appealed to every stratum of society. While some of his landscape prints, such as Evening Snow – Kanbara and Ohashi – Evening Rain, are well-known examples of Japanese art, the full range of his output is less familiar.

Hiroshige came from a samurai family, but he crossed social boundaries and devoted himself to depicting popular customs and the world around him. His work is distinguished by an air of gentle grace and decorum, perhaps arising partly from his steady temperament. His calm artistic vision sustained his contemporaries through the uncertainties of daily life and changing times. A great colourist, he stands out for discovering a subtle lyricism in the experience of travel, and a bond between people and the natural world.

Featuring highlights from leading private collections of Hiroshige prints, alongside works by Hiroshige and other artists from the British Museum’s outstanding collection of Japanese art and from other major collections, this lavishly illustrated new publication celebrates one of the world’s most accomplished artists.

About the Author:

Alfred Haft is JTI Project Curator for Japanese Collections and Curator of the exhibition Hiroshige at the British Museum. Previous publications include Salon culture in Japan: making art, 1750–1900 (contributor, 2024), Late Hokusai: Society, Thought, Technique, Legacy (contributor, 2023), Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave (contributor, 2017) and Aesthetic Strategies of the Floating World (author, 2012).

Newly updated and revised, How to Shoot Video That Doesn’t Suck is a quick and easy guide that will make your video better instantly — whether you read it cover to cover or just skim a few chapters. It’s about the language of video and how to think like a director, regardless of equipment (amateurs think about the camera, pros think about communication). It’s about the rules developed over a century of movie-making — which work just as well when shooting a two-year-old’s birthday party on your phone. Written by Steve Stockman, the director of the award-winning feature Two Weeks, plus TV shows, music videos, and hundreds of commercials, How to Shoot Video That Doesn’t Suck explains in 74 short, pithy, insightful chapters how to tell a story and entertain your audience. In other words, how to shoot video people will want to watch.

Here’s how to think in shots — how to move-point-shoot-stop-repeat, instead of planting yourself in one spot and pressing “Record” for five minutes. Why never to shoot until you see the whites of your subject’s eyes. Why to “zoom” with your feet and not the lens. How to create intrigue on camera. The book covers the basics of video production: framing, lighting, sound (use an external mic), editing, special effects (turn them off!), and gives advice on shooting a variety of specific situations: sporting events, parties and family gatherings, graduations and performances. Plus, how to make instructional and promotional videos, how to make a music video, how to capture stunts, and much more. At the end of every chapter is a suggestion of how to immediately put what you’ve learned into practice, so the next time you’re shooting you’ll have begun to master the skill. Steve’s website (stevestockman.com) provides video examples to illustrate different production ideas, techniques, and situations, and his latest thoughts on all things video.

About the Author:

Steve Stockman is a director, producer, and writer of films, television shows, and commercials. He made the feature film Two Weeks (2007) starring Sally Field, Ben Chaplin, and Tom Cavanagh. Every summer he mentors aspiring filmmakers and teaches video-making at Summer Stars Camp. He lives with his family in Los Angeles.

A lavishly illustrated history of Japanese screens — limited to 3,000 numbered copies

Japanese screens (byobu, meaning “barrier against the wind”) are made of wooden lattices with two to twelve panels, covered with a paper or fabric canvas. They are unique for being beautiful artworks as well as portable furnishings, acting as backdrops for court ceremonies or partitions for intimate tea services. Artists have embraced screens as three-dimensional objects, creating dynamic compositions that guide the viewer’s eye from one panel to the next.

This sumptuous book explores the 1,300-year history of Japanese screens. The authors, leading experts on Japanese art and culture, describe how screens developed from the eighth to the twenty-first century, from their ceremonial use in palaces and temples to their functional and decorative use in ordinary Japanese homes. They examine the stylistic evolution of screens and the wide variety of subjects, such as animals, the seasons, The Tale of Genji, and calligraphic designs.

Bound in the Japanese style and housed in a handsome clamshell box, this volume also comes with a poster-sized reproduction of an exceptional screen, suitable for framing. Japanese Screens will be an essential addition to any art lover’s library.
