From the earliest times, crowns have served as symbols of religious position and as signifiers of rank. Throughout the centuries and from culture to culture, crowns have varied in shape, material, usage and symbolism.

Crown Jewellery gives us an overwhelming overview including many photos of the actual crowns and regalia of the world. This publication highlights the evolution of crowns, different types and forms and their origins, and the precious materials used to make them. Royal events and ceremonies such as weddings, coronations, and funerals are abundantly illustrated with extraordinary photos. In addition to royal ceremonies, the spiritual and religious ceremonies of ordinary life are also highlighted in this abundantly illustrated publication.

A beautifully illustrated book showcasing masterpieces of European porcelain from The Met’s renowned collection

The quest to discover the process of making porcelain was one of the defining aspects of post-Renaissance Europe, and it had significant artistic, technical, and commercial ramifications. This beautifully illustrated book showcases ninety works, spanning the late 16th to the mid-19th century, and reflecting the major currents of European porcelain production. Each work is shown in glorious new photography, accompanied by analysis and interpretation by one of the leading experts in European decorative arts. Featuring blue-and-white wares from Italy, rare examples of German Meissen, French Sèvres, British Chelsea porcelain, and much more, this is a long-overdue survey of the greatest porcelain treasures from The Met’s vast collection.

About the Authors:

Jeffrey H. Munger is former curator and Elizabeth Sullivan is former associate research curator, both in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

These pendulum clocks not only tell time but also depict magnificent bronze and gilded sculptures which more or less relate to time, especially of Greek and Roman mythology, American Indian or African origin, and inhabitants of exotic countries. The author explains the underlying stories and scenes of everyday life in panels which represent the new, post-revolutionary era of the middle class in 19th century France.

Sacred paintings of the Christian Orthodox

This historical survey covers some one-and-a-half millennia of Christian imagery and includes descriptions of selected masterpieces

The icons in this book come from the Icon Museum in Recklinghausen, which possesses the most extensive and highest-quality icon collection outside the Orthodox world. Icons do not depict “details” of the earthly world, but rather an unearthly reality. In accordance with their sacred function, the painters had to keep to venerable traditions. This historical survey covers some one-and-a-half millennia and includes descriptions of selected masterpieces, providing a graphic introduction to this fascinating world of images. While the book's historical introduction traces the history of icon painting back to late Antiquity and the early Byzantine period, the examples in the picture section start with a 14th century Russian example and extend from the exquisite 15th century Byzantine icon “St Luke Paints the Mother of God” across the centuries to one from Transylvania (Romania) dating from 1887.

About the Series:
Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre Series features:

* a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period
* a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a reference work, portrait of the artist, and/or citations

This book provides the first comprehensive overview of the development of Jugendstil around 1900 in Bavaria's leading industrial city. More than two hundred and fifty objects from all areas of the decorative and applied arts illustrate the internationally significant range of "Nuremberg Jugendstil". Nuremberg Jugendstil used a broad variety of materials and its decoration is richly diverse. The focus was on metalworking, yet in addition to cast pewter, bronze, chased copper and silver, there was ivory and wood carving. Jewellery, textiles and ceramics complete the picture. What were known as 'art faiences' produced by the firm of Johann von Schwarz are among the best of the fine Jugendstil ceramics made in Germany. Five introductory chapters analyse the conditions under which the new stylistic movement emerged. It turns out that influences from abroad were just as important as the 'typically German' organisation of the apprenticeship system. Opening up markets for Nuremberg Jugendstil abroad also promoted the influence of international design, especially from Great Britain, on Nuremberg Jugendstil. A selection of designers include: Friedrich Adler, Peter Behrens, Rudolf Bosselt, Hans Christiansen, James Couper, Hermann Friling, Hermann Gradl, Paul Haustein, Josef Hoffmann, George Logan, Johann Lotz Witwe, Carl Sigmund Luber, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Bruno Paul, Richard Riemerschmid, Josef Wackerle, and Vilmos Zsolnay. A selection of workshops include: Gebr. Bing AG, Brand and Stauch, Felsenstein and Mainzer, J. F. P. Hausleiter, Franz Kainzinger, Emil Kellermann, Hans Knorr, Daniel Meinecke, Friedrich Muller, Valentin Oeckler, Walter Scherf and Co., Georg Friedrich Schmitt, Christian Schonamsgruber, J. von Schwarz, Ferdinand Semmelroth, Erhard Topf, Emma Volck, and J. C. Wich.

The very first comprehensive work on Louis-Philippe furniture, this book surveys the most important furniture types, stylistic features, woods, mounts and fittings and cloth upholstery. Establishes definitive diagnostic criteria for precisely distinguishing between the commonly used terms ‘Second Rococo/Rococo Revival’ and ‘Louis-Philippe’.

During the years between 1850 and 1870 furniture was made throughout Europe which borrowed stylistically from Rococo forms. Between the Biedermeier era and the subsequent period, during which industrialism took hold in Germany, the Louis-Philippe style (named after the king who headed the middle-class against the restored French monarchy to found the July Monarchy) developed a formal idiom distinctively its own within Historicism.

300 illustrations in colour, 180 signatures.

Pressure exerted by America in 1854 caused Japan to open its doors after 260 years of isolation. Virtually uninhibited receptiveness to everything Western was the driving force behind the modernisation of Japan initiated by the Meiji government yet it also induced a rapid rediscovery of indigenous cultural values. At early Paris and London international exhibitions, the Japanese decorative and applied arts sparked off the Western fascination with all things Japanese – japonisme. In Japan, on the other hand, new technologies were eagerly adopted – the government realised that increasing production for export would be an excellent means of promoting Japanese economic growth and thus enhancing Japan’s status worldwide.

The present publication represents the first detailed survey of the development of Japanese export porcelain against a highly charged background of political, economic and cultural factors. Stylistic development in Japanese ceramics did not mean one-sided Westernisation; instead, inspiration went both ways, most notably in the impact made by Japanese art on Art Nouveau/Jugendstil and, ultimately, the Japanese aesthetic response to it.

This is the first complete survey of Japanese export porcelain from the Meiji era to be published in English – a benchmark standard work for specialists and an insider tip for lovers of porcelain and anyone interested in Art Nouveau and Japan.
