A catalog documenting an exhibition of Marcel Duchamp’s editioned readymades at Gagosian Gallery, New York, replicating his American debut at Cordier & Ekstrom in the same building in 1965 and including new essays. Marcel Duchamp’s first readymade, a standard bicycle wheel attached to a wooden stool, came about “as a pleasure, something to have in my room the way you have a fire, or a pencil sharpener, except that there was no usefulness.” Over the ensuing decades many of his readymades were lost or destroyed, but in 1964 Duchamp, working with acclaimed gallerist Arturo Schwarz, supplanted the original readymades with fourteen precisely executed editioned multiples, a process which culminated in an exhibition in New York in 1965. 

Adina Kamien-Kazhdan chronicles this process in a new essay that provides significant insight into Duchamp and Schwarz’s relationship, as well as detailing the creation of the editions. Calvin Tomkins’ new profile of Duchamp prefaces this beautiful book and is a welcome addition, serving as the perfect introduction to the black-and-white installation shots from the 1965 show and the full-page color photographs of each readymade.

Calvin Tomkins is an author and art critic for The New Yorker magazine. He is the author of The Bride and the Bachelors, which traces Duchamp’s legacy through profiles and the artist and his contemporaries. Dr. Adina Kamien-Kazhdan is the David Rockefeller Curator at the Stella Fischbach Department of Modern Art, part of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.

Cubism, widely regarded as the most influential style to emerge at the advent of modernism, had a home in New York and a leading figure in Max Weber.

Max Weber studied under Matisse, associated with influential figures including Apollinaire, Picasso, and Delaunay, and is credited with bringing firsthand knowledge of the Parisian avant-garde to Alfred Stieglitz’s modernist circle in New York, inspiring a generation of artists. While his works are in important collections, they have not yet received the close study of the artist’s peers, such as Picasso, Braque, and Leger.

William C. Agee, a veteran museum curator and renowned scholar of twentieth-century American art, and scholar Pamela N. Koob take up the challenge in a lavishly illustrated volume, gathering together a selection of Max Weber’s best cubist works. Close readings of Weber’s paintings open the most complete survey to date of American cubism, with entries on key cubist works by Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Hans Hofmann, Charles Sheeler, Morgan Russell, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Alice Trumbull Mason, and David Smith, among many others. Born in Iran to a family with a long history of dealing in Persian carpets, perhaps it was inevitable that Essie Sakhai should become a respected expert on Oriental and Persian carpets, gaining much of his great knowledge from his father Benayahoo Sakhai. Essie lives in North London, though he spends most of his time at Essie Carpets on the corner of Albemarle Street and Piccadilly in London's Mayfair, carrying on the family tradition started in the 18th century. Essie is a true enthusiast and hopes through his extensive lectures, interviews and writing (his previous books include The Story of Carpets, which has been translated into many languages, The Buyers' Guide, and Persian Rugs and Carpets: The Fabric of Life) to share his knowledge and passion for carpets with a wider audience. 

Jonathan Wadsworth is a renowned specialist in European, Persian and oriental rugs and carpets and has dedicated over 40 years to the study and promotion of carpets and woven art. Formerly a director of Sotheby’s Europe, Jonathan was head of their carpet department, and a flamboyant auctioneer based in London. Jonathan has been on the vetting committee of the prestigious Grosvenor House Antiques fair, London and acted as specialist consultant to auctioneers at home and abroad including Bowrings in New Delhi, India. He has lectured extensively on commercial and academic topics associated with Persian rugs and carpets, with lecture tours including Plum Blossoms Forum for the arts in Singapore, Moore College of art in Philadelphia, USA, and The British Council in both New Delhi and Kolkatta, India.
