A completely redesigned and updated edition of The Queen’s Dolls’ House, to include new photography and discoveries made during the recent conservation of the Dolls’ House.

The Queen’s Dolls’ House is the largest, most beautiful and most famous dolls’ house in the world. Created for Queen Mary in the early 1920s by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, it is a perfect replica of an aristocratic Edwardian residence, complete in every way – from the wine cellar, with its store of tiny bottles, each containing a thimbleful of vintage wine, to the library, with its exquisite volumes of original works by authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Thomas Hardy and Edith Wharton. This astonishing little house also has a garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll, a garage full of miniature limousines, and electricity, running water and working lifts. Each room, from the servants’ bedrooms to the grand saloon, is fully furnished in every way, and waiting to be explored.

Lucinda Lambton guides the reader on an imaginative tour of this most magical of residences, from life below stairs to the high society setting of saloon and dining room, from the children's toys in the nursery to the miniature accoutrements of dressing-table and bathroom. Her narrative is complemented by documents from the Royal Archives, including previously unpublished letters between Queen Mary and Lutyens and the many contributing artists and manufacturers.

Lucinda Lambton is a writer, photographer and broadcaster, particularly renowned for her interest in art and architectural oddities. Her publications include Vanishing Victoriana, Temples of Convenience, Beastly Buildings, An Album of Curious Houses and Lucinda Lambton’s A–Z of Britain

Norbert Wolf

Издательство: Prestel

A luxurious and definitive exploration of how and why the Renaissance flourished in Italy for two centuries

The idea of “renaissance,” or rebirth, arose in Italy as a way of reviving the art, science, and scholarship of the Classical era. It was also powered by a quest to document artistic “reality” according to newly discovered scientific and mathematical principles. By the late 15th century, Italy had become the recognized European leader in the fields of painting, architecture, and sculpture. But why was Florence the center of this burgeoning creativity, and how did it spread to other Italian cities? Brimming with vivid reproductions of works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, and others, this book showcases the creative achievements that traveled from Florence to Rome to Venice.

Art historian Norbert Wolf explores the influence of secular and religious patronage on artistic development; how the urban structure and way of life allowed for such a rich exchange of ideas; and how ideas of humanism informed artists reaching toward the future while clinging to the ideals of the past. Insightful, ccessible, and fascinating, this thoroughly researched book highlights the connections and mutual influences of Florence, Rome, and Venice as well as their intriguing rivalries and interdependencies.

About the Author:

Norbert Wolf is an art historian and author based in Munich. He has published several books with Prestel, including "Art Nouveau""Art Deco""Impressionism""Spanish Painting", and "The Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish Painting", as well as monographs on Albrecht Dürer and Titian.

The undisputed master of glass, Louis Comfort Tiffany created decorative works of art utilizing colour, light, and texture, forging a unique and spectacular style.

Tiffany began his career as an interior designer, but unable to find the types of glass that he desired, his interest turned toward the creation of stained glass. In 1878, he opened his own studio and glass foundry. His creativity and originality both as a designer of windows, lamps, and vases and as a producer of the material with which to create them quickly became renowned. He is considered one of the most versatile and talented artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While exploring Tiffany’s domestic interiors,

A Passion for Colour focuses on Tiffany’s dazzling and dramatic work on religious and secular stained glass, vases, and lamps. Included in the book are 250 lavish colour plates that examine in rich detail the fine workmanship and inventive techniques of Tiffany and his studio. In addition, the book includes vintage photographs, drawings, and sketches that provide further insight into his creative process.

This book accompanies an exhibition of the same title organized by the Museum of Fine Arts of Montreal and presented at the Musée du Luxembourg, Paris, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond.

About the Authors:

Louis C. Tiffany (1848–1933), son of the famous American jeweller Charles Lewis Tiffany, was an artist and designer best known for his work in stained glass. He designed windows, lamps, glass mosaics, ceramics, jewellery, enamels, and metalwork.

Rosalind Pepall is Curator of Decorative Arts at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montreal.

Dmytro Soloviov
ID: 18699
Издательство: Fuel

Ukraine’s overlooked modernist buildings are under threat from development, decommunization and war. Photographer Dmytro Soloviov has crossed Ukraine documenting them to form the most comprehensive publication available on the subject.

What does Ukrainian Modernist architecture look like and why isn’t it better-known in the west?

Photographer and architectural tour guide Dmytro Soloviov is fighting to preserve the disappearing modernist heritage of his native Ukraine.

These innovative buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avant-garde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war.

From masterpieces such as the Kyiv Crematorium and Salut Hotel, to previously undocumented examples like the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station, Soloviov has traversed Ukraine photographing the exteriors and interiors of these important buildings and their monumental art (mosaics, stained glass and sculptures). While the nation’s attention is consumed by more existential matters, he has documented the unique identity of one of the least catalogued periods of Soviet architecture, his images forming a singular record of an unexpected and rapidly disappearing legacy.

An introduction by renowned architecture critic Owen Hatherley, complete with historical images, cements these buildings in a cultural and political context. With over 120 examples across 240 pages, this publication is the most comprehensive available on the subject.

About the Author:

Dmytro Soloviov is a Kyiv-based Ukrainian architecture photographer and researcher documenting modernist art and architecture. His lifelong mission is to preserve modernist heritage and promote its value. Dmytro campaigns for the protection of significant modernist buildings and artworks, conducts architectural tours and lectures based on his research, and organizes monumental art restoration projects. His Instagram account @ukrainianmodernism has over 100,000 followers worldwide.

This is the first comprehensive book on Venetian mosaics of the nineteenth century. It illustrates work by both the Salviati Company and the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company. A carefully researched work, Venetian Glass addresses the revival of the art of Venetian mosaic making in the mid-nineteenth century and discusses the complicity of both Antonio Salviati and Sir Austen Henry Layard in that revival. It is a comprehensive work, illustrating Salviati's earliest surviving mosaics, the 1860 mosaic decoration of the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore and continuing through his company's last commission, the Stanford Memorial Church in Palo Alto, California.

The recovered art of Venetian mosaic in the late-nineteenth- and early twentieth-century is now seen as one of the most important aesthetic achievements of the Victorian-Edwardian era. Neglected and unappreciated for decades, surviving mosaics are being cleaned and restored worldwide. Whether highly visible monuments in major cities or small achievements of Venetian manufacturers are now treasured for the splendid masterpieces they are.

Brushwork and poetry – the great awakening of Venetian painting around 1500.

In the Venice of the Renaissance, master artists like Bellini, Giorgione, Palma Vecchio and Titian explored the essence of mankind and nature and their relationship to each other with an unprecedented intensity. This attractive volume shows through important portraits and landscape representations the pioneering innovations of Venetian painting, which continued to leave their mark right up to the modern age.

The painting of the city on the lagoon captivates us not only through the wealth of colours and the nuances of the light, but also through the exceptional sensitivity with which the artists focused on their works. They created sophisticated portraits, seductive idealised likenesses and history paintings whose principal character is the atmospheric landscape. The publication examines the masterpieces in depth with regard to their remarkable innovative strength, the context in which they were produced, and contemporary interpretations.

Author Toto Bergamo Rossi, Introduction by Count Marino Zorzi, Photographs by Matteo De Fina, Contributions by Diane von Furstenberg and Peter Marino
ID: 15855
Издательство: Rizzoli

While Venice is better known for soft light and atmospheric painters, this elegant new volume transforms our understanding of Venetian sculpture and its place in the city’s artistic tradition.

A feast for the eyes and an entertaining, erudite read, this book opens with an illustrated survey of the 120 doges who led the Venetian Republic before continuing with a detailed survey of the incredible array of sculptures and monuments that memorialize them.

Although celebrated for painting and music, Venice has a sculptural tradition that was overshadowed by Florence and Rome. Based on new scholarship, this volume reveals the true magnificence of six centuries of Venetian sculpture. With the oldest works dating to the thirteenth century, these masterpieces fill the city’s churches and include pieces by great masters from the Lombardo family to Antonio Rizzo, Jacopo Sansovino, Alessandro Vittoria, and Baldassare Longhena.

The sculptural marvels of Venice tell the story of a procession of doges—politicians, scholars, conquerors, merchants, and even a saint, Pietro Orseolo — over a thousand-year history. Engaging text highlights the adventurous, eventful, and sometimes glorious lives of these legendary figures, while the newly commissioned photography showcases the grandeur and beauty of a neglected aspect of Venice’s cultural history.

Photographs by Massimo Listri, Text by Raniero Gnoli and Carlo Gasparri and Alvar González-Palacios
ID: 15516
Издательство: Rizzoli

A journey through its emotional itineraries is unveiled for the very first time by the photographic masterpieces of Massimo Listri.

Villa Albani Torlonia, with its collections, the Italian garden, and the hemicycle of the Kaffeehaus, is a sublime testimony of that particular antiquarian taste which came to the fore in the mid-eighteenth century, that for which Rome became a favorite destination on the Grand Tour. The classicist dream of Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692–1779), was preserved thanks to the Torlonia family, who purchased the villa in 1866, enlarging the collection and the gardens and restoring the most important cardinal residence of the eighteenth century.

More than 300 images by the great Italian master Massimo Listri recount the history of this extraordinary cultural heritage for the very first time. An immersive journey leads the reader between its collections of ancient masterpieces. Statues, bas-reliefs, and fountains are ensconced between the various buildings and gardens of the villa in a composition of environments, landscapes, and works of art forever waiting to be discovered.

About the Authors:

Massimo Listri is a photographer who has published more than 70 books and has exhibited his work at numerous solo exhibitions throughout the world. Carlo Gasparri is emeritus professor at the University of Naples Federico II and has authored several books about archaeology and Greek and Roman art. Raniero Gnoli is an Orientalist and historian of religions. Alvar González-Palacios is an author and art historian and former collaborator of FMR magazine.

From the earliest cave paintings through to the internet and street art, this inspiring book chronicles the 100 most influential ideas that have shaped the world of art. Arranged in broadly chronological order, it provides a unique and compelling take on the history of art.

The book shows how developments in materials (oil paint, plastics, paint in tubes) and technology (paper, photography, welding) have radically changed the way that art is produced. But these changes run parallel with influences from wider culture such as the study of optics and anatomy and more conceptual concerns such as chance and ephemerality. Each entry explores when an idea first evolved and how it has resurfaced in the work of different artists up to the present day.

Lavishly illustrated with historical masterpieces and packed with fascinating contemporary examples, this is an inspirational and wholly original guide to understanding the forces that have shaped world art.

Never show everything

"Girls, Gags & Giggles" - this was publisher Robert Harrison's recipe for dishing up the American pin-up to the U.S. male. In the 1950s his girlie magazines sold by the millions, before becoming icons of pulp and trash culture.

These skilfully illustrated girls with their curvaceous forms and inviting lingerie soon overtook America's national dessert, in terms of popularity, and even developed considerable potential as a cultural export during the 1940s. "Never show everything," was always the motto. Smiling prettily at the camera, the models exuded just the right amount of sex appeal without seeming too sophisticated or artful. They were the 'girls next door' whose wholesome attraction soon made one forget the magazines' deliberately trashy presentation. Their rosy complexions and innocent allures still titillate even in an age when far more graphic material is the norm. For everyone who enjoys pin-ups, push-ups and pulp style!

“To look at these pictures is to remember that there was a time when taking off your clothes was a potent gesture, when the mere fact of a naked woman could be thrilling.” National Post, Toronto
