Author Christopher Rothko and Kate Rothko Prizel and Alexander Nemerov and Hiroshi Sugimoto
ID: 15736
Издательство: Rizzoli

A landmark monograph on an unprecedented scale that allows all aspects of Mark Rothko’s career to be heard in full voice, published in close collaboration with the artist’s family and featuring beloved works from major collections as well as never-before-seen canvases and paintings on paper.

Deluxe and comprehensive, this revelatory volume examines the brilliance of Mark Rothko (1903–1970), a pioneer of the New York School and major figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Illustrated with more than 275 images that explore his paintings, prints, and works on paper, this book highlights the best-known and also lesser-known works by Rothko — from his early figurative and Surrealist works to his mesmerizing color-field paintings of immense scale to the more restricted palette of his luminous later works and his final series of black-and-gray paintings. Among Rothko’s artistic philosophies, he held that painting was a deeply psychological and spiritual experience through which basic human emotions could be communicated. This is the first book to include foldouts that highlight works from the Rothko Chapel in Houston and the Rothko Room at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko draw on intimate knowledge of the artworks and the artist’s life to give a fuller picture of their father and place him within the context of art history; they endeavor to give an impartial portrait—the man and his work—while introducing personal details where they can enlighten. Alexander Nemerov and Hiroshi Sugimoto provide reflections about the artist’s work.

About the Author:

Christopher Rothko is the son of Mark Rothko and is actively involved in managing his father's legacy. He has helped prepare more than two dozen Rothko exhibitions. Kate Rothko Prizel is the daughter of Mark Rothko. She fought and won a prolonged legal battle that resulted in the return of almost 700 of her father’s works to his estate. Alexander Nemerov is Professor at Stanford University. Hiroshi Sugimoto is a contemporary photographer and architect.

Mark Rothko's awe-inspiring yet deceptively simple, iconic colour field paintings belie the mythical and emotional complexity behind them.

Rothko put his heart and soul into creating works that were to act upon the viewer in an almost physical way, progressing from figurative and symbolist works to eventually using shimmering and enveloping colour to elevate you to higher spiritual awareness.

This gorgeous book enables you to discover the themes, thinking and methodology behind the oeuvre, from Greek tragedy and Nietzsche to music and colour, whilst experiencing his pieces displayed in full, free of clutter, for you to immerse yourself and be swept away.

Travel is a fundamental experience of human existence. For Max Beckmann it was of existential importance both in a symbolic, but also in a deeply personal sense. In the 1920s, he regularly traveled to the noble health resorts and palace hotels on the Dutch, Italian, and French coasts. His defamation as a "degenerate" artist by the Nazi regime, however, forced him to retreat, first from Frankfurt to Berlin and subsequently into exile in Amsterdam. His emigration to the United States marked the culmination of a life entwined with the longing to travel as well as uprooting, transit and exile. Max Beckmann. DEPARTURE assembles an outstanding selection of artworks and initiates a dialogue with hitherto unseen objects and materials from the Max Beckmann Archive. It shows Beckmann’s relationship to film and literature as a producer of images of aspirations and longing resonating with notions of identity and home.

About the Author:

Max Beckmann (1884-1950) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. A star of the Berlin Secession, Beckmann’s career was slowed by World War I and a personal crisis, but continued in the 1920s. After the Nazis forced him to resign his professorship in Frankfurt in 1933, he went into exile in Amsterdam in 1937 and subsequently emigrated to the US in 1947. Teaching in St. Louis and New York, he became the most successful German artist in the United States of his time.

Discover the evolution of Modigliani’s art, through the prism of his relationship with his art dealer, Paul Guillaume.

This beautifully illustrated catalogue and its accompanying exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris demonstrate how Modigliani’s partnership with his gallerist Paul Guillaume influenced his painting. When Amedeo Modigliani arrived in Paris in 1906, the Jewish-Italian artist was a painter. His meeting with sculptor Constantin Brancusi in 1909 was a revelation, and inspired Modigliani to sculpt ― almost exclusively ― until 1914, when he met art dealer Paul Guillaume. The effects of this meeting were sudden and total. Modigliani would return to painting and never look back. This volume unveils the relationship that prompted this change through analysis of Modigliani’s paintings and Guillaume’s writings. With these resources at hand, the reader gains an intimate insight into this intriguing duo whose combined talents as artist and promotor left an indelible mark on the history of twentieth-century art. The book highlights their complicity and shared interests in African art, literature, and poetry.

About the Author:

Cécile Girardeau is a curator at the Musée de l’Orangerie. Simonetta Fraquelli is an independent curator and art historian. Yaëlle Biro is assistant curator of African Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Marie-Amélie Senot is a curator of modern and contemporary art.

Spot on: Amedeo Modigliani in an exciting joint catalogue

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) moved to Paris as a 22-year-old art student and is regarded as probably the last true bohémien in Montmartre. The exhibition catalogue to mark the 100th anniversary of his death shows him for the first time as a leading member of the avant-garde who carried the revolution of Primitivism well into the 20th century.

Modigliani’s famous nudes, unusual portraits and unique sculptures are contrasted with works by Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncusi and André Derain as well as artefacts from so-called “primitive” cultures. In doing so the volume focuses in particular on Modigliani’s lifelong study of the art of Primitivism, which also interested the artist friends who influenced his work. Some 100 works are on view, including numerous main works by Modigliani from the great museums and most important private collections from America to Asia.

Written by Takashi Murakami, Contribution by Massimiliano Gioni
ID: 12542
Издательство: Rizzoli

A comprehensive volume — overseen by the artist himself — on one of the most renowned living artists today, Takashi Murakami.

Takashi Murakami is celebrated the world over for his deft blurring of high and low art. In this volume, accompanying a major exhibition of his work and the first in the Middle East, readers are immersed in the unique way Murakami channels the ecstasy and anxiety of contemporary culture. Conceived by the artist as a self-portrait in the guise of a cartoon, Murakami – Ego illuminates the role of the artist as a cipher and critic of pop phenomena as well as a mirror of global networks of consumerism, interpretation, and exchange.

The book features some of the artist’s most celebrated series, including Kaikai Kiki Lots of Faces and Pom and Me. Murakami has conceived of the exhibition itself as a work of art, creating new modes of display that include sculptural pedestals with digital animation, a circus tent that doubles as an indoor cinema, and an impressive 300-foot-long painting, all of which are featured in the book. In addition to an interview by curator Massimiliano Gioni, Murakami will contribute writings on various works.

About the Author:

Takashi Murakami has become recognized as one of the most prominent contemporary artists of his time. His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions at museums and art institutions throughout the world. Recent shows include the travelling retrospective ©MURAKAMI and the Château de Versailles’s solo exhibition of his works on the palace grounds. Massimiliano Gioni is the associate director and director of exhibitions for the New Museum in New York and the curator of the exhibition Murakami – Ego for the Qatar Museums Authority.

A unique and compelling view of the work of leading contemporary artist Nalini Malani through the lens of her most recent commission

This publication presents the latest work of Nalini Malani (b. 1946), recipient of the 2022 National Gallery Contemporary Fellowship with ArtFund.

For over five decades, Malani’s art has focused on giving a voice to the stories of those marginalized by history— particularly women. She is one of the most incisive artists of our time, and the acute analysis and poetic compassion of her experimental film, photography, painting, and drawing has influenced generations of others from the 1960s to the present day.

For her first museum commission in the United Kingdom, Malani has created an immersive installation of large-scale, animated drawings inspired by the sites, histories, and collections of the National Gallery, London, and the Holburne Museum, Bath. With a floating palimpsest of digital images, Malani reveals, annotates, and shares new, underlying stories in some of Europe’s best-known paintings, offering a contemporary and critical dialogue between past and present.

With leading articles based on new research, sumptuous illustrations, and artist-led design, this extensive study documents the Fellowship alongside the artist’s previous work.

Christopher Finch
ID: 15838
Издательство: Abbeville Press

It seems familiar because it was everyone's dream of America; and it was unique because only Rockwell managed to bring it to life with such authority. This was, perhaps, an America that never existed, but it was an America the public wanted to exist. And Rockwell put it together from elements that were there for everyone to see.

Norman Rockwell helped preserve American myths, but, more than that, he recreated them and made them palatable for new generations. His function was to reassure people, to remind them of old values in times of rapid change.

About the Author:

Christopher Finch was born in Guernsey, Channel Islands, in 1939 and came to the United States in 1968 to join the curatorial staff of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. His books include the best sellers Norman Rockwell’s America, The Art of Walt Disney, and Rainbow, a biography of Judy Garland, which was turned into a motion picture for NBC television.

Shepard Fairey, Giuseppe Pizzuto
ID: 18644
Издательство: Skira

A visual and conceptual journey through the 35-year career of one of the most influential and internationally acclaimed street artists

On the occasion of 35 years of Shepard Fairey’s (Obey) career, this monograph presents a body of work that is among the most representative of his artistic production, together with numerous unique pieces conceived especially for the occasion. The sections of the book are inspired by the most representative themes of Shepard Fairey’s art: propaganda; peace and justice; environment; music and new works.

Shepard Fairey (Charleston, 1970) is the artist behind Obey. Known for the HOPE poster, a portrait of Barack Obama for the 2008 presidential campaign, Obey is distinguished by an essential and bold style with a minimalist palette guided by the hip hop and punk cultures that taught the artist to question social conventions. This is the poetics with which Fairey animates all of his works, inviting the audience to question on relevant current issues.

About the Authors:

Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. He earned a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. He is best known for his Barack Obama “Hope” poster, which he created in support of the 2008 presidential campaign. His work has been included in the collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

An exceptional monograph-catalogue revealing the innovative drive in Gauguin’s work

This catalogue offers a unique opportunity to view Gauguin’s entire artistic development from his early impressionist works to his final masterpieces painted on the Marquesas Islands where the artist went in search of an Arcadian kingdom “of ecstasy, peace and art, far from the typical European struggle for money”.

In reality such a paradise on earth no longer existed, not even on the other side of the globe, however the wealth and complexity of life that he found before him there, inspired the creation of a series of works which are among the most vivid and durable in the history of painting.
