Discover the evolution of Modigliani’s art, through the prism of his relationship with his art dealer, Paul Guillaume.

This beautifully illustrated catalogue and its accompanying exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris demonstrate how Modigliani’s partnership with his gallerist Paul Guillaume influenced his painting. When Amedeo Modigliani arrived in Paris in 1906, the Jewish-Italian artist was a painter. His meeting with sculptor Constantin Brancusi in 1909 was a revelation, and inspired Modigliani to sculpt ― almost exclusively ― until 1914, when he met art dealer Paul Guillaume. The effects of this meeting were sudden and total. Modigliani would return to painting and never look back. This volume unveils the relationship that prompted this change through analysis of Modigliani’s paintings and Guillaume’s writings. With these resources at hand, the reader gains an intimate insight into this intriguing duo whose combined talents as artist and promotor left an indelible mark on the history of twentieth-century art. The book highlights their complicity and shared interests in African art, literature, and poetry.

Spot on: Amedeo Modigliani in an exciting joint catalogue

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) moved to Paris as a 22-year-old art student and is regarded as probably the last true bohémien in Montmartre. The exhibition catalogue to mark the 100th anniversary of his death shows him for the first time as a leading member of the avant-garde who carried the revolution of Primitivism well into the 20th century.

Modigliani’s famous nudes, unusual portraits and unique sculptures are contrasted with works by Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncusi and André Derain as well as artefacts from so-called “primitive” cultures. In doing so the volume focuses in particular on Modigliani’s lifelong study of the art of Primitivism, which also interested the artist friends who influenced his work. Some 100 works are on view, including numerous main works by Modigliani from the great museums and most important private collections from America to Asia.

A comprehensive volume — overseen by the artist himself — on one of the most renowned living artists today, Takashi Murakami. 

Takashi Murakami is celebrated the world over for his deft blurring of high and low art. In this volume, accompanying a major exhibition of his work and the first in the Middle East, readers are immersed in the unique way Murakami channels the ecstasy and anxiety of contemporary culture. Conceived by the artist as a self-portrait in the guise of a cartoon, Murakami – Ego illuminates the role of the artist as a cipher and critic of pop phenomena as well as a mirror of global networks of consumerism, interpretation, and exchange. 

The book features some of the artist’s most celebrated series, including Kaikai Kiki Lots of Faces and Pom and Me. Murakami has conceived of the exhibition itself as a work of art, creating new modes of display that include sculptural pedestals with digital animation, a circus tent that doubles as an indoor cinema, and an impressive 300-foot-long painting, all of which are featured in the book. In addition to an interview by curator Massimiliano Gioni, Murakami will contribute writings on various works.

A unique and compelling view of the work of leading contemporary artist Nalini Malani through the lens of her most recent commission

Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. He earned a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. He is best known for his Barack Obama “Hope” poster, which he created in support of the 2008 presidential campaign. His work has been included in the collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Giuseppe Pizzuto is curator and director of Wunderkammern Gallery.

Pareidolia is a long-awaited collection of the art of James Jean, featuring works that span the majority of his career. The first major survey on the graceful and colorful paintings of American artist Paul Resika.

This new monograph is the most comprehensive book on the work of Paul Resika (b. 1928) to date, highlighting his landscapes, portraits, and still lifes from the 1940s to the present. Resika's most important teacher was Hans Hofmann, with whom he studied on Cape Cod and in New York City in the mid-forties.

Resika's subjects are drawn from nature and reflect his surroundings, which change with the seasons: in winter, he lives in New York; in summer, Cape Cod; in spring he spends time painting in the south of France and in Italy. Province-town piers, fishing boats in the harbor, figures on the beach, and French farmhouses in the countryside emanate a dreamlike serenity and make up the rich visual vocabulary for which Resika is best known.

Since his emergence in the early 1960s as a key member of the Pop Art movement, Peter Blake has become one of the best-known and most popular artists of his generation. Marco Livingstone is an art historian, writer and independent curator who has written extensively on post-war painting and sculpture, particularly on Pop Art and figurative painting. His many publications include books and museum catalogues on David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, R.B. Kitaj, Allen Jones, Clive Barker, Paula Rego, Peter Kinley, Adrian Berg, Duane Michals, Jim Dine, Tom Wesselmann, George Segal, Duane Hanson and Caroline Walker. Livingstone’s Hockney’s Portraits and People won the Sir Banister Fletcher Award for best book on the arts, and his other publications include Pop Art: A Continuing History, David Hockney and The Essential Duane Michals, all published by Thames & Hudson.

Coupling defeat and despair with rebellious humor, Danish artist Peter Linde Busk explores the grotesque conditions of human existence. Populating his works with tragic and awkward figures like fallen heroes, jesters, or outlaws in abstract spaces of detailed ornamentation, his figurations are  meticulously composed using a great variety of textures and techniques, and often incorporate random material relics from previous works. Similarly, his titles are wry quotes or poetic fragments: it is from Rilke that Peter Linde Busk has borrowed the title of the book, Who speaks of victory? To endure is all. 

This richly illustrated monograph features a major essay by art historian Maria Fabricius Hansen juxtaposing Linde Busk’s work with medieval mosaics and the grotesques of Renaissance art. A catalogue raisonné of works from 2015 to 2022 is supplemented by short prose texts and a playlist by writer Minna Grooss that suggests a sound track to the materially emphatic works by Linde Busk.

Peter Linde Busk (*1973, Copenhagen) is one of the most renowned Danish artists of his generation.
