Celebrate the life and work of Peter Paul Rubens with this informative introduction to the Flemish artist

Arguably the greatest artist of the Baroque period, Peter Paul Rubens was an accomplished painter and draughtsman, as well as a valued diplomat. This accessible examination of his life and work looks at every aspect of Rubens's oeuvre; from his commissioned portraits of royalty and the nobility to his magnificent representations of ancient myths, Biblical stories, and historical events. This incisive biography traces his life as a student in Venice, where he encountered the works of Titian and Tintoretto, the establishment of his studio in Antwerp, and the lucrative patronages of Marie de Medici and Phillip IV. Full-page reproductions of Rubens's work communicate his energetic and dynamic style, along with his masterful use of color and sensuous depictions of the human body.

About the Author:

Michael Robinson is a freelance lecturer and writer on art and design history having gained a Master's degree at Kingston University, where he spent many years as a lecturer. He is also a Blue Badge tourist guide and can often be found in Museums and galleries sharing his passions for art.

This monograph on the life and work of iconoclastic Japanese artist Shiro Tsujimura demonstrates how, in his signature self-taught manner, he has reinvented the classic ceramic art form.

Shiro Tsujimura is a vanguard contemporary ceramic artist. While his creations and techniques are deeply rooted in traditional Japanese and Korean styles, his independent streak defines his practice with a sense of freedom, playfulness, and self-confidence that results in decidedly unique works. This monograph takes readers inside his studio and home to discover his artistic practice and lifestyle. Axel Vervoordt, Alexandra Munroe, and longtime friend Hiroshi Sujimoto each contribute a highly personal essay, providing rare insight into this magnetic artist. Tsujimura himself shares his approach to ceramics, deeply linked to both his training as a monk and his fierce independence, which drove him from his spiritual practice to become an artist. Each of his creations is pure and spiritual, where the passing of time and the art of imperfection play an important role.

Tsujimura has held solo exhibitions around the world and his works have been acquired from Japan to Berlin to New York by the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Met and The British Museum.

About the Authors:

Axel Vervoordt is a collector, antiquarian, designer, and curator who regularly incorporates Tsujimura’s work into interior design projects. Alexandra Munroe is curator of Asian Art at the Guggenheim in New York. Hiroshi Sugimoto is a renowned photographer and architect. Shiro Tsujimura is an eminent Japanese artist and potter. Volume 1 of Joaquin Sorolla's catalogue raisonné is the first part of the culmination of a project initiated by Francisco Pons-Sorolla and Blanca Pons-Sorolla, which assembles all currently known works by the painter - some 4,000 pieces.

This first volume is dedicated to the collection of the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, Spain

Joaquin Sorolla's catalogue raisonné is the culmination of a project that was initiated by Francisco Pons-Sorolla and Blanca Pons-Sorolla, which assembles all the work of the painter known so far (over 4,000 works). The aim of this project is the publication of five volumes in which the works by Joaquin Sorolla Bastida (1863-1923) will be presented by themes: 1. Sorolla Museum; 2. The Sea and the Beach; 3. Portraits; 4. Landscapes; 5. Composition Works. Within these themes, the works will be presented chronologically, so that the evolution of the painter can be observed in each case.

This first volume of the catalogue is dedicated to the collection of the Sorolla Museum, which houses the largest collection of the artist's works. It displays a comprehensive panorama of the painter's oeuvre through 1,300 pieces.

The project is currently being financed by the Sorolla Museum Foundation, and is being carried out by Blanca Pons-Sorolla, with the collaboration of Teresa Jiménez-Landi and Mónica Rodríguez Subirana. Since the beginning of the project in 1987, a profoundly better understanding of Sorolla's work has been achieved.

About the Author:

Blanca Pons-Sorolla, great-granddaughter of Joaquín Sorolla, is an independent researcher of the artist's oeuvre, and has been working on his catalogue raisonné for many years.

Valencian master Sorolla's Impressionist paintings depict the most beautiful gardens and architecture in Spain.

Like Claude Monet's celebrated plein-air landscapes at Giverny, the series collected in this book represents among the best-loved examples of Joaquín Sorolla's (1863-1923) work, and a window into the Spanish painter's quest to capture the essence of a garden. Described by Monet as "the master of light," Sorolla and his landscapes, formal portraits, and historically-themed canvases drew comparisons to contemporary American painter John Singer Sargent. Sorolla had achieved renown on both sides of the Atlantic for grand scenes of Spanish life when he began a personal series of garden works, presented completely for the first time in this publication.

Painted at the palaces of La Granja and the Alcázar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada, and at the painter's home in Madrid, these Impressionist works allowed Sorolla to apply his signature loose brushwork and training as a photographer's lighting assistant to gardens and the sculptures, architecture, and sitters that frame and animate them. Sorolla depicted reflections in fountains and pools, the sunlight dappling his glamorous sitters, sprays of orange blossoms, and shaded blue-and-white tile as he endeavoured to render the radiant peace of a summer afternoon.

About the Author:

Blanca Pons-Sorolla is the foremost scholar on the work of Joaquín Sorolla and has written and contributed to numerous books, including Sorolla: The Masterworks. She is the artist's great-granddaughter. She was deputy curator of the retrospective exhibition "Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923)" held at the Prado in 2009.

The highly anticipated fifth volume of The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, covering his paintings from 1976 to 1978

This two-book addition to The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné persuasively demonstrates the subversive core of Warhol's art. Intent on radical departure from his portraiture in the early seventies, Warhol's production gradually became anything but 'just faces'. From portraits of athletes and self-portraits to his Skull and Hammer and Sickle series, the Torso and Sex Parts paintings, and his abstract Piss, Oxidation, and Cum canvases, volume 5 showcases Warhol's work as powerful, and provocative as ever.

About the Authors:

Neil Printz co-edited volumes 1 and 2 of The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné and is the editor of volumes 3 and 4. He was formerly editor of the Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné and research curator for twentieth-century art at The Menil Collection, Houston.

Sally King-Nero, executive editor of Volumes 2, 3, and 4 of The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, is curator of drawings and photographs at the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York.

The first in a multi-volume series on Warhol's complete artworks.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is one of the most iconic figures of twentieth-century art, a highly enigmatic personality who not only altered the definition of art but also left in his wake a vast and staggeringly complex record of his daily activities.

The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, the definitive record of the artist's paintings, sculptures and drawings, cover some 15,000 works produced by Warhol between 1948 and 1987. Also included is an incredible array of rarely published source material, including newspaper scraps and movie star publicity stills that inspired Warhol's boundlessly fascinating life and career.

The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné was initiated in 1977 by Thomas Ammann. The editors Georg Frei and Neil Printz began primary research in 1993 and have been advised throughout the project by the distinguished curators and art historians Kynaston McShine and Robert Rosenblum. Experts from the Andy Warhol Foundation personally examined the vast majority of Warhol's works and began a thorough review of his archive, which at his death consisted of some 1,500 cardboard boxes, flat files, and trunks filled with source material, memorabilia, correspondence and junk mail.

The editors examined works in museum conservation facilities and discussed them with conservators, submitted works for review by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, and interviewed Warhol's assistants and colleagues to assemble a customized database of works unparalleled in Warhol scholarship. All of their findings are documented in this unprecendented project.

Each annotated catalogue entry includes the works title, date, medium, dimensions and present owner, followed by a record of inscriptions, provenance, exhibitions and literature. Related works are linked by general introductory texts that explore historical circumstances, shared themes and studio practices. Supplementary figures to the texts illustrate source materials that Warhol appropriated for his works: newspaper articles and advertisements, soup cans and publicity stills, as well as related drawings, works by other artists, and studio and exhibition views. Volume 1 includes classic and much-prized Warhols such as the Campbell Soup paintings, images of the iconic figures of Marilyn, Liz and Elvis, and early self-portraits.

About the Authors:

Georg Frei is a curator, art critic, and editor who has been affiliated with Thomas Ammann Fine Art AG in Zurich since 1988. Previously he wrote art, dance, and theatre criticism for several Swiss newspapers and magazines. For the Thomas Ammann gallery he has organized more than a dozen exhibitions and edited the accompanying catalogues on such artists as Picasso, Cy Twombly, Max Beckmann, and Willem de Kooning. For the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, he was the guest curator of the exhibition 'Andy Warhol: Series and singles, 2000-2001'.

Neil Printz is an art historian with a focus on twentieth century American art. He is currently the editor of the Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné for the Isamu Noguchi Foundation in New York, and Professor of Art History at Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey. From 1977 to 1983 he was the director of the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York. Dr. Printz has contributed and edited articles for several journals and museum publications, including The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas; the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn; the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt; and the St. Petersburg Foundation for Culture and Art. He was Research Curator at The Menil Collection from 1983 to 1991.

The fourth volume of this highly praised, definitive reference to Andy Warhol’s (1928–1987) extensive artistic production

The 607 paintings and one sculpture documented in Volume 4 of The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné were produced during a period of less than three years, from late 1974 through early 1977. In September 1974, Warhol changed studios, moving across Union Square from the sixth floor of 33 Union Square West to the third floor of 860 West Broadway. Like Volumes 2 and 3, Volume 4 is identified with a new studio, where Warhol continued to work for a decade, until he moved into his last studio at 22 East 33 Street on December 3, 1984. Volume 4 may be seen as the first in a series of books associated with one studio that will document an enormously productive ten-year period in Warhol's oeuvre from the mid seventies to the mid eighties.

About the Authors:

Sally King-Nero, Executive Editor of Volumes 2 and 3 of the Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, is Curator of Drawings and Photographs at the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York.

Neil Printz, co-edited the first two volumes of the Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné. Paintings and Sculptures, 1961–1963 and Paintings and Sculptures, 1964–1969. He is the Editor of Volume 3: Paintings and Sculptures, 1970–1974. He was formerly Editor of the Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné and Research Curator for Twentieth Century Art at The Menil Collection, Houston.

The second in a multi-volume series on Warhol's complete artworks.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most iconic figure of twentieth-century art, a highly enigmatic personality who not only altered the definition of art itself but also left in his wake a vast and staggeringly complex record of his activities. Warhol's archive consists not only of his artworks but also of 1,500 cardboard boxes, flat files and trunks filled with source material, memorabilia, correspondence and junk mail. The catalogue raisonné constitutes an indispensable record of the artist's paintings, drawings and sculptures: some 15,000 works produced by the artist between 1948 and 1987, the year of his death.

Volume 2 documents the artist's paintings, sculpture and installations made between 1964 and 1969, the important period known as 'The Factory Years', when Warhol began to acquire Pop Art fame as well as a cadre of collaborators and groupies - all of which made 'The Factory' into one of the most mythologized artist's studios ever, and Warhol's work at this time emblematic of his career as a whole. This volume documents 23 series and more than 1,400 individual works, including the well-known series Thirteen Most Wanted Men, the box sculptures, approximately 300 works in the Jackie series, and the 1964 and 1964-5 Flowers series, amongst others.

As in Volume 1, Volume 2 includes a fascinating collection of source material: especially the rare studio photographs taken by Billy Name-Linich, who became The Factory's first de facto photographic historian. In this volume, editors Georg Frei and Neil Printz focus on Warhol's serial production, analysing the evolution of Warhol's working methods and the growing relationship between Warhol's exhibitions and his studio production. They establish a sophisticated and extensive chronology for the works of this period, many of which have been difficult to locate and to date, due to their seriality. The text provides both a compelling overview and an unparalleled deconstruction of Warhol's riveting story.

The project is co-sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York and by Thomas Ammann Fine Art in Zurich.

Sarah M. Lowe (Commentary), Carlos Fuentes (Introduction)
ID: 8150
Издательство: Abrams

An intimate self-portrait of one of the most renowned Mexican artists of the twentieth century, this beautiful book is “a visual document, engaging the eye with a volcanic profusion of penned-and-painted imagery” (New York Times).

Published in its entirety, Frida Kahlo’s amazing illustrated journal documents the last 10 years of her turbulent life. These passionate, often surprising, intimate records, kept under lock and key for some 40 years in Mexico, reveal many new dimensions in the complex personal life of this remarkable artist.

The 170-page journal contains the artist’s thoughts, poems, and dreams — many reflecting her stormy relationship with her husband, artist Diego Rivera — along with 70 mesmerizing watercolor illustrations. Her views of love, politics, and more come into sharp focus in a kaleidoscope of creativity and thought.

In his introduction, award-winner Carlos Fuentes, one of Mexico’s most important writers and critics, ties Kahlo’s images of pain, loss, mutilation, and transcendence to Mexico’s historic cycles of revolution and reaction. Sprinkled with irony, black humor, even gaiety, and augmented with translations of the diary entries plus commentaries and photographs, her diary stands as a reminder of not only Kahlo’s formidable talent, but also her resilience and courage.

About the Authors:

The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) is now regarded as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century.

Carlos Fuentes is celebrated internationally as one of the world’s foremost literary figures. He has written numerous essays, articles, and novels. He has also served as Mexico’s ambassador to France and has held other diplomatic and academic posts.

Sarah M. Lowe is the author of Frida Kahlo, an analytical study of her paintings, and coauthor of Consuelo Kanaga: An American Photographer. Her monograph on the photographs of Tina Modotti is also published by Abrams.

An authoritative survey of Twombly’s complex body of work

Cy Twombly created art that was remarkable for its versatility, sensitivity and originality. Throughout his career, he followed his own artistic pathway, independent from contemporary trends, and for a long time his work went unnoticed by a wider audience. By the time of his death in Rome, at the age of 83, he was internationally recognized as one of the greatest and most idiosyncratic artists of the 20th and early 21st century.

This book provides an authoritative overview of Twombly’s complex body of work, bringing together the most important of his paintings and painting cycles, as well as a selection of his drawings, sculptures and photographs. Each group of works is introduced and discussed by respected art historians, including Simon Schama, Laszlo Glozer, Kirk Varnedoe and Thierry Greub.

Born in Lexington, Virginia, Cy Twombly (1928–2011) studied in Boston, New York, and at Black Mountain College, South Carolina, before travelling the world and eventually settling in Europe; from 1957 onwards, he was based in Italy. At an early stage, he began to develop his own symbolic language of letters and words, which suggested a pictorial form of poetry. References from art, history and mythology soon expanded this poetic vocabulary, often combined with a sensual engagement with the painted surface.

Contents List:

Introduction by Nicola Del Roscio • DRAWINGS • Cy Twombly by Simon Schama • PAINTINGS • Inscriptions in Arcadia by Kirk Varnedoe • SCULPTURES • PHOTOGRAPHS • Twombly by Laszlo Glozer • Cy Twombly’s ‘Inverted Archaeology’ by Thierry Greub

About the Authors:

Nicola Del Roscio, Cy Twombly’s long-time companion, is the author or editor of many books on Twombly, including the catalogues raisonnés of his drawings and sculpture.

One of the most revered Latin American artists of the early 20th century, best known for his abstract and primitive paintings, with key works from private collections published for the first time.

With 70 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, this is the largest survey of Torres-García’s work to be on view in an American gallery since Joaquín Torres-García curated his own exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery in 1950. The book includes previously unpublished texts by the artist and iconic works that were kept by the family as representative examples of different moments in his career, first by the artist and later by family members who inherited them as a group. Torres-García founded the avant-garde group Circle and Square (Arp, Kandinsky, Léger, Mondrian), where he was inspired by indigenous art from the Americas, Africa, and Oceania, which reinforced his vision of symbols and cosmic order.

“Art nègre? I don’t know it.” With this provocative tone, Picasso tried to deny his relationship with art from outside of Europe. However, through hundreds of archival documents and photographs, this volume illustrates how non-European art from Africa, Oceania, the Americas, and Asia was a recurring source of inspiration for the artist.

Side-by-side comparisons illustrate the links between Picasso’s oeuvre and diverse “primitive” arts. In both, we find the same themes ― nudity, sexuality, impulses, death, and more ― along with parallel artistic expressions of those themes ― such as disfiguration or destruction of the body.

The volume is completed with a chronology of the relevant works and photographs of the artist in his studio.
