Vasily Kandinsky became the pioneer of abstract art; he was a co-founder of the Blauer Reiter, an art theorist and an influential teacher at the Bauhaus. When he abandoned his promising career as a lawyer in favour of art at the age of 30, no one could have guessed that a few years later he would play a decisive role in determining and revolutionising twentieth-century art.

Elizabeth Childress is the director of the Walter De Maria Archives. Michael Childress is the archivist at the Walter De Maria Archives. Dagny Corcoran was the founding proprietor of Art Catalogues, an art bookstore in Culver City, California. She also served as director of books and multiples at Marian Goodman Gallery. Donna De Salvo is the senior adjunct curator of special projects at Dia Art Foundation in New York. Michael Govan is the CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Christine Mehring is the Mary L. Block Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Chicago, as well as associate faculty in the Department of Visual Arts at the University. She also serves as an adjunct curator at the David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art. Lars Nittve is the director of the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Walter Tandy Murch (1907–1967) is best known for his enigmatic, dreamlike still-life paintings of everyday objects and mechanical devices in a style that falls between Magic Realist, Surrealist, and Realist. This volume offers the most comprehensive collection of his work, including his striking commercial work for magazines and his paintings from the extensive collection of George Lucas.

The South African artist William Kentridge Hon RA was born in Johannesburg in 1955 and lives and works there to this day. He is internationally renowned for the expressionism of his work in numerous media, among them charcoal, printmaking, sculpture and film, as well as his acclaimed theatrical and operatic productions. Often wryly funny and just as smart, Albert Oehlen’s paintings play the medium for all it's worth - and then some. After realizing that the so-called death of painting freed him to explore "the number of aspects through which one could expand painting," Oehlen started work on a wide variety of figurative and non-objective offerings, in what he has called his "post-non-figurative" art. The artist continuously challenges himself, setting up rules that force him to overcome convention and his own routine in order to arrive at a satisfying image. During his career, he has chosen to paint in primary colours only or in grey, to integrate mirrors into his canvases, or to start on computer paintings when the first PCs became available. In his most recent work, Oehlen expands painting through the use of advertising posters whose in-your-face aesthetics he transforms with subtle brushwork.
