Robert Couturier and Tim McKeough, Preface by Carolyne Roehm, Afterword by Caroline Weber, Photographs by Tim Street-Porter
ID: 16290
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A passion for luxury and beauty propels the multifaceted work of acclaimed international architect and interior designer Robert Couturier. Robert Couturier’s aesthetic is a dialogue between Old World elegance and contemporary design. His masterful approach effortlessly brings eras together, for example, a Louis XVI commode with a 1960s lamp. Couturier’s name has become synonymous with continental and international style, and he is known for composing adventurous rooms that have a witty flair. All his interiors extol the importance of how a home should stimulate the five senses, from the tactile feel of upholstery to the visual presentation of objects that leads a person through a space. The book opens with a tour of Couturier’s country retreat in bucolic Kent, Connecticut. Composed of neoclassical-style pavilions, early American guesthouses, and beautiful gardens, the house features imaginative rooms that are filled with his collections of European art, furniture, and decorative objects. A selection of the designer’s other projects — from smart contemporary apartments to romantic Mexican villas to a stately English manor — provides further inspiration.

Carolyne Roehm's bestselling books have been a source of inspiration, pleasure, and education for thousands of readers. Now for the first time she shares her life story, from her small-town Missouri childhood to her New York fashion career that began with Oscar de la Renta, to her role as an author and tastemaker. There are the influential figures from her past, including: her grandmother, who sewed beautifully and ran a successful shop; her mother, who taught her that women need clothes to suit the many roles they have to play; her mentor, Oscar de la Renta, from whom she learned the fashion business. Roehm tells the story of launching, running, and ultimately closing her own fashion line, and her subsequent reinvention through books, gardening, entertaining, and décor. Through it all she shows how the constant threads of character and creativity, and a passion for nature, color, quality, and classicism can inform your work, style, and life.

In this exquisitely lush volume, lifestyle legend Carolyne Roehm celebrates her gardens as outdoor living rooms, revealing how she chooses the plants, flowers, and layouts; how she entertains guests with gorgeous table settings and breathtaking arrangements; and how she savors the hours among the blooms.

As Carolyne Roehm says, " It s as simple as this: a garden is like love...a place you venture into with hope, energy, excitement, enchantment, and the greatest of expectations."

For Roehm, the garden has always been more than a canvas for beauty. A place where her devoted efforts bear glorious results, the garden is not only a reflection of what has inspired Roehm, but also a font of inspiration from which she draws -- for her astonishingly lovely arrangements, her gracious dinner parties, and her new passion for interpreting her flowers in vibrant watercolor paintings.

Each of the gardens at her historic Connecticut home, Weatherstone, has been lovingly crafted to serve as an outdoor living room, where the hours may be passed at work, alone, or enjoyed with company. In the Parterre Gardens bordering the south side of the home, Roehm created a fantasy of snow in spring with white tulips and Sargentina crabapple trees. All of the varietals in her Rose Garden were selected for their pulchritude and divine scent, as well as for their ability to bloom twice to satisfy her insatiable thirst for roses. And when the stream through her property offered only an unsatisfying trickle, Roehm replaced it with a river of hostas, primula, bleeding hearts, and rodgersia that sweeps through her Shade Garden.

As Roehm accompanies us on the first-ever tour of these marvels, she shares witty and candid stories of the unexpected triumphs and the sometimes-crushing defeats. And always, there is her desire to return to the garden to tend, to mend, or to plant anew.

A garden is like love, Roehm claims, and indeed, this lavishly illustrated volume is a testament to an enduring, complex, unquestionably personal, and deeply passionate amour.

In her most personal book, Carolyne Roehm shares her lifelong love of classical architecture and design, graciously inviting us into her favorite spaces in three remarkable homes: her own dazzling Manhattan prewar duplex, her antique-filled Colonial-era stone house in Connecticut, and a special friend’s Aspen residence evocative of eighteenth-century Sweden. Each is an architectural showpiece as well as a superlative example of her polished style: never fussy, always graceful and enticing.

Even as a young design assistant to Oscar de la Renta, Carolyne Roehm was a devotee of the eternal virtues of artistry. Now, having lived in several residences, she has gathered her knowledge, enthusiasms, and extraordinary collections to make these three homes quintessential examples of the Roehm style. Each is individual - yet all showcase her classical leanings and devotion to the beauty and grace of authentic craftsmanship. The New York apartment, with its selection of antique busts and objects and superlative artwork and furnishings; the stunning double-height great room, beautifully finished in handcrafted neoclassical details, that forms the heart of her Connecticut residence; Aspen’s colorful, abundant interiors, light-flooded from 78 windows - all express the special, satisfying harmony that can exist between timeless architecture and the artisan’s atelier.

With more than 300 intimate and evocative photographs of these classical splendors, A Passion for Interiors is a masterwork - rich with stylish inspirations for tailor-made décor. Oprah Winfrey admits, “Whenever I’m having a stressful day, I just want to open up Carolyne Roehm’s books, look at beautiful things, and dream.” Indeed, there is plenty to dream about in this extraordinary book.
