With a completely refreshed look to celebrate its tenth anniversary, Michael Freeman’s iconic bestseller, The Photographer’s Eye, has never looked better.

Design is the single most important factor in creating a successful photograph. The ability to see the potential for a strong picture and then organize the graphic elements into an effective, compelling composition has always been one of the key skills in making photographs.

Of course, digital photography has brought a new, exciting aspect to design first because the instant feedback from a digital camera allows immediate appraisal and improvement; and second, because image-editing tools make it possible to alter and enhance the design after the shutter has been pressed. This has had a profound effect on the way digital photographers take pictures.

The Photographers Eye shows how anyone can develop an eye for seeing great digital photos. The book explores all the traditional approaches to composition and design, but crucially, it also addresses the new digital technique of shooting in the knowledge that a picture will later be edited, manipulated, or montaged to result in a final image that may be very different from the one seen in the viewfinder.

Taking a new look at composition, the theme of his bestselling classic The Photographer’s Eye, Michael Freeman now explores the visual mechanics of photography in its own native terms. Lushly illustrated with straight-to-the-point diagrams and graphic deconstructions, this new, digitally remastered edition speaks in that intuitive, visual, and instantaneous language in which photographers think and work.

Each section is organized into discrete units that articulate a working method for communicating particular ideas and capturing certain subjects. Dive into beautiful images and explore how each compositional element is placed and arranged in relationship to each other. Examine the outtakes from each shoot to understand why one particular image succeeded, compared to those shot before and after. Track the viewer’s eye as it moves throughout the photo to see the optical dynamics held within each frame. And most of all, internalize this graphic language so you can instantly recognise amazing and powerful shots as they appear in your own viewfinder.

Black and white occupies a special place in the development of photography, and the sharp revival of interest in it testifies to its enduring appeal. The simplicity of a monochrome image, recorded just in the modulation of tones, makes it an elegant visual medium in which to work. The economy of the palette focuses the attention on certain essentials, such as shape, form and quality of light, as well as texture and subtle tonal graduations. Now, with digital photography and all its tools and possibilities for editing images, there is a new era of the hand-crafted print. Black & White is an essential guide that will teach both enthusiasts and professionals how the digital workflow can create stunning monochrome images.

Interior design has undergone a quiet but profound revolution in the last decade, as home-owners have become more aware of international influences and more prepared to experiment, to break out of the prescribed moulds of style. Many different parts of the world – in particular India, China, and Japan – have evolved their own unique styles of modernism, much of it rooted in the traditional principles of their particular regions, and this has helped to liberate the way we now think about dwelling space, its organisation and furnishing.

Drawing on a wide range of modern design from many countries, this unique, rich sourcebook takes an elemental approach to the design of a home. In an age when no interior design principle goes unchallenged and all ideas are possible, the only sensible approach is to start from the basic elements – how a home works and what we expect from it. The Source, illustrated with hundreds of colour photographs by Michael Freeman, is divided into four sections which each cover a basic function.

The first, Connect, deals with the connectivity of a home, from entrances and corridors to staircases. The second, Divide, shows the many ways in which individual areas can be divided and linked, from walls to screens and unconventional dividers, as well as flexible partitions that draw on Japanese and Chinese principles. The third section, Space, is concerned with living spaces in all their variety, balancing the twin needs of comfort and inspiration. The last section, Utility, covers the basic functions of any dwelling, from cooking and bathing to working at home and storage. All of this is illustrated by a vast array of ideas and solutions from many of the world’s best interior designers and architects. This new book offers a different and refreshing way of looking at the house and the elemental way of how we live today.

Michael Freeman is an acclaimed photographer and writer who specialises in travel, architecture and interiors. He has photographed extensively for many international publishers, and has written more than two dozen books on photography, with more than a million copies sold.

Called tsubo-niwa after a unit of measurement that is two person-sized tatami mats placed side by side, the pocket garden has been a part of the Japanese architectural canon for thousands of years. Undergoing a modernization in the last few decades in which a new generation of architects began experimenting with the concept in imaginative ways, the contemporary garden follows a distinct yet global aesthetic, whether as an urban solution to importing nature, as an individual theme set within a larger garden space, or as a buffer between property lines of a house or apartment. Beautifully illustrated and designed with a reflective, contemplative aesthetic, the book offers a broad array of miniature garden designs, including Keno Kuma’s explorations of materials as diverse as andesite and plastic, Takeshi Nagasaki’s art installation gardens with stepping stones of cast glass and bronze, and Yasuhiro Harada’s mobile cube gardens—plantings in stainless-steel trays on wheels that can be stacked and rearranged at will.

The influence of traditional Asian design is far-reaching, and today, contemporary Asian interior designers and architects have developed a new kind of modernism that references the appropriate elements of their own traditions.

The New East is the first comprehensive volume to present this ongoing style revolution and is sure to inspire anyone looking to add harmony and sensuality to their homes. Rich photographs brilliantly showcase Asian designs for living. Here you'll find everything you need to know about combining Western design motifs with Eastern traditional elements, such as the Japanese sliding screens; creating harmonious balance between the indoor and the outdoor space; and selecting specific materials that make up the traditional design form in Asia, such as bamboo and stone.

This book teaches how to adapt to the Asian design philosophy of reducing a space to its core essentials and thus creating a natural and simple minimalist look, ultimately adding a sense of serenity and tranquility to your space.
