A glorious, intimate homage to this magical country from bestselling photographer and writer Miguel Flores-Vianna

A land immortalized by poets for its otherworldly beauty, Greece is the birthplace of iconic monuments that are known the world over. Yet, at the same time, it is also home to an organic architectural language, the product of centuries of rural and island lifestyles — it is the heir both to the timelessness of classical architecture and the simplicity of rustic living.

This stunning volume chronicles Miguel Flores-Vianna’s photographic odyssey through the beautiful Greek landscape, showcasing historical houses alongside contemporary homes, united by the colorful characters who either live or have lived in these places — the “haute bohemians”.

From the sophisticated residences of collectors and painters to island hideaways, centuries-old tavernas, royal follies, breathtaking gardens and even a restored sailboat, Flores-Vianna transports his armchair travel companions to a wondrous world, bathed in the glow of an ethereal light. An extraordinary range of characters emerges — including historic figures such as the shepherd Alexandros Rodakis and Queen Amalia, and contemporary creatives such as antique dealer Eleni Martinou and architect Katerina Tsigarida. Featured, too, are the homes of international residents who share a passion for this magical land, such as interior designer John Stefanidis, artists Helen and Brice Marden, and financier and philanthropist Jacob Rothschild.

A self-confessed “Hellenophile” who has visited Greece countless times since his childhood, Flores-Vianna invites us to join him in paying tribute to his beloved adopted nation, capturing the character and patina of this enchanting country through his trademark intimate, atmospheric photography, and engaging texts.

A personal celebration of the hunt for — and joy of living with — favorite collections and things

What is it in our homes that we truly value and why? What would you take when you leave in fear of fire?

Our home is an expression of ourselves in many ways, largely through the objects we accumulate. For Maria Hummer-Tuttle, the objects she has collected over the years, from the priceless to the flea-market finds, are precious not only for their beauty, uniqueness, and craftsmanship but also for their connection to the past and the future, for their resonance with one another.

In this exquisitely illustrated book, she serves as our guide through three dwellings, focusing our attention on objects ranging from an ancient Chinese horse sculpture to a Louis XV clock painted with characters from an Aesop fable, from a small snail sculpture found in a venerable hardware store to a monumental safety-pin sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, and from 18th-century to 20th-century furniture.

With a foreword by master ceramicist and acclaimed author Edmund de Waal and featuring two lavish gatefolds, Objects of Desire is a feast for the eyes and an object to be cherished in its own right.

This visually stunning volume explores Monticello, both house and plantation, with texts that present a current assessment of Jefferson’s cultural contributions to his noteworthy home and the fledgling country.

Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), third president of the United States, designed his Virginia residence with innovations that were progressive, even unprecedented, in the new world. Six acclaimed arts and cultural luminaries pay homage to Jefferson, citing his work at Monticello as testament to his genius in art, culture, and science, from his adaptation of Palladian architecture, his sweeping vision for landscape design, his experimental gardens, and his passion for French wine and cuisine to his eclectic mix of European and American art and artifacts and the creation of the country’s seminal library. Each writer considers the important role, and the painful reality, of Jefferson’s enslaved workforce, which made his lifestyle and plantation possible. This book, illustrated with superb photography by Miguel Flores-Vianna, is a necessary addition to the libraries of those who love historical architecture and landscape design, art and cultural history, and the lives of prominent Americans.

Miguel Flores-Vianna’s childhood in Argentina was marked by two constants that he believes shaped the life he chose to lead: travel and books. Perhaps because the country feels like it is located at the end of the world, most Argentines are born with a good dose of wanderlust, and Flores-Vianna had a higher dose than normal.

Books helped him discover places both literally and figuratively, creating romantic visions of lands he wanted to visit, and he has gone on to document his peripatetic life with his camera, recording places as he feels they should be rather than as they are. In this irresistible volume, Flores-Vianna shares some 250 of his favorite images taken all over Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas – captured only with his smartphone – in the hope that viewers, seeing the world through his eyes, will learn to love these most wondrous of places as much as he does.
