Henry Bourne, Robin Muir, Pilar Viladas, Jane Withers
ID: 17259
Издательство: Rizzoli

Henry Bourne’s photographs of the residences and workspaces of a who’s who of creative people open windows onto the groundbreaking design approaches and trends of the last three decades.

For nearly thirty years, Bourne has been photographing the residences and studios of, or those designed by, some of the world’s most important artists, architects, designers, and innovators. Culture and society are constantly evolving, and changes, both aesthetic and sociological, are reflected in our physical surroundings. Spaces and portraits in this volume range from the Upstate New York studio of artist Richard Prince, Vincent Van Duysen’s early apartment in Antwerp, and Marc Newson’s residences (his modern former bachelor pad as well as the more textured apartment he shares with Charlotte Stockdale today) to the joyfully chaotic London atelier of artist Paula Rego, the Villa Volpi by architect Tomaso Buzzi near Rome, the London studio of artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster— before and after its sleek renovation, designed by architect David Adjaye.

Creative director Peter Saville’s sleek London apartment captures the essence of the 1990s, while the homes of both architect Zaha Hadid and minimalist master John Pawson are self-portraits in design. This book is a collection of mainly personal spaces and portraits of luminaries at the turn of the twenty-first century, depicting the contradictory yet stimulating language of contemporary design: stylish and functional, maximalist and minimalist, opulent and understated.

Henry Bourne is a photographer known for his work in portraiture, architecture, and still life. He is a regular contributor to numerous publications including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, T: The New York Times Style Magazine and The World of Interiors.

Dmytro Soloviov

Издательство: Fuel

Ukraine’s overlooked modernist buildings are under threat from development, decommunization and war. Photographer Dmytro Soloviov has crossed Ukraine documenting them to form the most comprehensive publication available on the subject.

What does Ukrainian Modernist architecture look like and why isn’t it better-known in the west?

Photographer and architectural tour guide Dmytro Soloviov is fighting to preserve the disappearing modernist heritage of his native Ukraine.

These innovative buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avant-garde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war.

From masterpieces such as the Kyiv Crematorium and Salut Hotel, to previously undocumented examples like the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station, Soloviov has traversed Ukraine photographing the exteriors and interiors of these important buildings and their monumental art (mosaics, stained glass and sculptures). While the nation’s attention is consumed by more existential matters, he has documented the unique identity of one of the least catalogued periods of Soviet architecture, his images forming a singular record of an unexpected and rapidly disappearing legacy.

An introduction by renowned architecture critic Owen Hatherley, complete with historical images, cements these buildings in a cultural and political context. With over 120 examples across 240 pages, this publication is the most comprehensive available on the subject.

About the Author:

Dmytro Soloviov is a Kyiv-based Ukrainian architecture photographer and researcher documenting modernist art and architecture. His lifelong mission is to preserve modernist heritage and promote its value. Dmytro campaigns for the protection of significant modernist buildings and artworks, conducts architectural tours and lectures based on his research, and organizes monumental art restoration projects. His Instagram account @ukrainianmodernism has over 100,000 followers worldwide.

Volume 1: 100 Years of Urban Planning for Greater Berlin
Volume 2: International Urban Planning Competition for Berlin-Brandenburg 2070. Perspectives from Europe

The ‘new urban municipality of Berlin’, also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city’s area increased from 66 to 878 square kilometres, its population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new planning and development projects continued to transform the greater urban area, which has grown, seemingly without end, far beyond the boundaries of Berlin.

The two volumes of Unfinished Metropolis are dedicated to the past and future of Greater Berlin. The first volume offers an insight into an array of different topics, such as Berlin’s role as the capital of Germany, its relationship with Brandenburg, and the historical, economic, and social conditions that have driven the growth of the urban area over the centuries. The second volume delves deeper into the designs for the future. It comprehensively documents the International Urban Planning Competition for Berlin-Brandenburg 2070, held by the states’ association of architects and engineers. It also explores how other European capital regions – London, Moscow, Paris, and Vienna – are seeking to ensure sustainable urban development in years to come.

____________

Urban planning was an essential instrument of the National Socialist dictatorship. It served to legitimize rule and demonstrate strength, accompanied rearmament and war, conveyed the socio-political program, was a medium of competition with other states, tied old and new professionals to the regime, and systematically marginalized population groups.

In this book urban planning under the Nazi dictatorship is for the first time examined not only as something that evolved during the different periods of Nazi rule but also in the context of other European dictatorships of the time. The period between 1933 and 1945 saw important changes in the focus of Nazi urban planning. These affected the cast of principal actors, the content of the regime’s propaganda, cities and areas affected, programs and practices, and winners and losers. The result of this survey is a multi-layered picture that goes beyond the usual presentation of well-known power-projecting buildings to take into account a range of other important aspects including housing construction, urban renewal, internal colonization, buildings for rearmament, large-scale infrastructure, industrial areas, educational institutions, and camps.

This volume marks the conclusion of a series of academic publications on the subject of urban planning and dictatorship – in the Soviet Union, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

As we recognize the necessity of creating more sustainable and humane cities, Jackie Brookner’s most recent work, Urban Rain: Stormwater as Resource, points the way. How do we learn to not just see what we have chosen to ignore and consigned to waste, but to actually celebrate and utilize it? As Patricia Phillips says in her informative essay, “The artist uses stormwater as both a raw material to exploit and the problem to solve producing a fascinating feedback loop of aesthetic decisions and ecological imperatives.”

Commissioned by the City of San Jose, California to work at the Roosevelt Community Center, a new LEED gold building, Brookner created two installations that collect and filter rainwater shed from the roof of the building. Beyond their elegant functionality, these works provoke questions about where the body begins and ends, about our human dependence on natural systems, and about what the being of human can mean today. This publication documents Brookner’s process from concept drawings through installation and includes provocative essays by noted art critic Patricia Phillips and hydrologist Franco Montalto.
