Designers’ homes are often laboratories where they are free to experiment.
These spaces are filled with the designer’s most personal and cherished objects, furnishings, and artwork that are concentrated expressions of their style and interests. New York Design at Home profiles 27 homes and looks at how these creative professionals approach design in their personal space.
Like most New York City residents, they are decorating with much smaller budgets than their work projects, but they find creative ways to deal with tiny bathrooms, awkward and unusable kitchens, and shared living spaces.
Photographed by Noe DeWitt, New York Design at Home highlights the carefully considered details within each interior―the Pablo Picasso painting reproduced as wallpaper, the kitchen utensils on display, textiles that provide pops of color in an otherwise monochromatic space ― and captures the creative essence of these homes with new, never-before-published images.

Who made New York the centre of the chic and urbane interior - a city where Andy Warhol entertained in a French Empire salon and Babe Paley served martinis and cigarettes in her taxicab yellow living room? The answer is discovered in the illustrated profiles of nearly 100 interior designers in the two-volumes of "New York Interior Design, 1935-1985", which introduces the Acanthus Press Visual Library. Over 600 photographs, assembled by author Judith Gura, present a visual biography of the city's interior innovators. From the refreshed Francophilia of Eleanor McMillen Brown to the high-tech minimalism of Ward Bennett, volume 1: "Inventors of Tradition" and volume 2: "Masters of Modernism", unfold a glittering panorama of New York's old world duplexes and river and park-view towers. In addition to the work of celebrated tastemakers - Mario Buatta, Billy Baldwin, and Melvin Dwork - Gura uncovers the interiors of once-influential, now-obscure designers whose work played an important role in the development of the New York look. Among these tastemakers are William Pahlmann, the pioneer of contemporary eclecticism in the 1940s; Emily Malino, a 1950s modernist with a soft touch; and the incomparable Barbara d'Arcy, whose trendsetting model rooms for Bloomingdale's electrified the 1960s and the 1970s. Acanthus Press Visual Library presents worlds of culture and design through images.

New York City has always been home to the chic and urbane a place where Andy Warhol entertained in his French Empire salon and where Babe Paley served martinis and cigarettes in her taxicab-yellow living room. Who made this city the center of cosmopolitan interior design as we know it today? The answer is found in the lavishly illustrated profiles of the nearly 100 interior designers featured in the two-volumes of New York Interior Design 1935 1985.
Over 600 photographs assembled by author Judith Gura present a visual biography of the city s interior innovators. From the refreshed Francophilia of Eleanor McMillen Brown to the high-tech minimalism of Ward Bennett, New York Interior Design unfolds a glittering panorama of New York s old world duplexes, river and park-view towers, and its minimalist downtown lofts.
Volume I, Inventors of Tradition, highlights the careers and showcases the work of the designers who translated and then transformed European period styles into a new vocabulary for America. In addition to the work of celebrated tastemakers Billy Baldwin, Mario Buatta, and Albert Hadley Gura uncovers the interiors of once-influential, now-obscure designers whose work played an important role in the development of the New York look. Among these practitioners are William Pahlmann, the pioneer of contemporary eclecticism; the glamorous Melanie Kahane, with a fondness for shocking pink and tasteful pizzaz; and the epitome of the southern civility, Joseph Braswell, who believed that a beautiful environment could make its occupants into better people.
Inventors of Tradition is accompanied by Volume II, New York Interior Design, 1935-1985: Masters of Modernism, which examines the work of the designers who moved away from European tradition, incorporated new materials and cutting-edge technologies, and pioneered the architectural approach to interior decorating.
It's a classic thing we've all heard: "New York is great to visit, but I wouldn`t want to live there." New Yorkers laugh it off because they know the secret: it's even better when you live there. New York Interiors offers readers the chance to see the Big Apple`s most fabulous pads in all their eccentric splendor. The Hell's Angel who sleeps next to a coffin, the painter who makes art from trash, the woman who's brought Provence to Downtown, the couple who live in the Brooklyn of the 19th century - "typical" New Yorkers` homes are presented alongside those of its glitterati (such as Leo Castelli, Wolfgang Joop, Isabella Rossellini and Steven Spielberg). With beautiful photographs of over 40 homes in and around New York City, this book is bound to convince the nay-sayers that New York really is the place to be - and live.
From midtown Manhattan to the Hudson Valley, discover the most unique interiors that the Big Apple and its environs have to offer.
A favorite haunt of designers, artists, artisans, decorators, and architects from around the globe — as well as all those who delight in creatively embellishing their home — New York never ceases to enchant us with its wealth of exceptional interior spaces. The harmonious coexistence of traditional and avant-garde, chic and bohemian, imposing and intimate — both in and out of doors — defines the city’s unique style. A luxury apartment with magnificent paneling hung with old master paintings; a glassed-in eagles’ nest perched atop an art deco skyscraper; or a delightful brownstone with a private garden worthy of a picturesque country village — this multifarious city captivates and seduces its visitors.
Offering exclusive access into seventeen homes of prominent New Yorkers, this book showcases the often colorful and audacious, but always fashionable and sophisticated interiors of New York’s best style-setters.
Barbara and René Stoeltie take readers on a personalized journey through New York, from antiques expert Louis Bofferding’s elegant Manhattan apartment, to architect James Joseph and composer Scott Frankel’s meticulously restored bucolic haven on the outskirts of the city, via the dizzying heights of decorator John Saladino’s exquisite apartment in the Olympic Tower, a Fifth Avenue skyscraper.

This is a book of houses where we all would like to live. The locations are diverse - New England, Long Island, Pennsylvania, California - and the architecture encompasses both traditional and contemporary vocabulary. What links them is their livable scale and the architect’s commitment to creating congenial spaces with a handsome and functional design. They are unassuming dwellings whose architecture moves easily to the background, supporting comfortable furniture, works of art from a variety of periods and styles, and the plantings and outdoor spaces that are essential to the composition.
These houses display grace and style inside and out. They invite a full range of activities from formal to informal, from celebration to repose, from a solitary existence to a house full of children or guests. These houses have good places to read a book or write a letter, to take a nap, and to cook and eat with family and friends.
Aeons ago, the theory goes, back when human beings first began planning structures, the buildings they designed were of two types. There were houses, to satisfy everyday needs, and there were temples, to satisfy the need for something beyond the everyday. In both cases, the function of architecture was to nurture culture by uniting souls, joining families and congregations into societies and states. Nicolas Schuybroek’s designs treat the familiar―homes, offices, hotels, and objects alike―with a reverence that he describes as almost mystical. This illustrated book provides for the first time a wide-ranging look at the multifaceted work of this exceptional architect.

The man who built the future. Seven decades of work from the Brazilian visionary
On the occasion of Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer’s 100th anniversary, the New York Times wrote, "In the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s he established himself as one of Modernism’s greatest luminaries, infusing stark abstract forms with a beguiling tropical hedonism that reshaped Brazil’s identity in the popular imagination and mesmerized architects around the globe."
Until his death at age 104 in 2012, over seven decades since one of his first projects - a 1936 collaboration with Lucio Costa and Le Corbusier - Oscar Niemeyer was still practicing. A technical pioneer and one of the 20th century’s most important architects, Niemeyer has designed close to 700 realized and unrealized buildings and, most notably, was the architect for the principal monuments in Brasilia, his homeland’s futuristic capital city and his undisputed major masterpiece.
About the Series:
Every book in TASCHEN's Basic Architecture Series features:
Until his death at age 104, Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012) was something of an unstoppable architectural force. Over seven decades of work, he designed approximately 600 buildings, transforming skylines from Bab-Ezzouar, Algeria, to his homeland masterpiece Brasília.
Niemeyer’s work took the reduced forms of modernism and infused them with free-flowing grace. In place of pared-down starkness, his structures rippled with sinuous and seductive lines. In buildings such as the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum, Edifício Copan, or the Metropolitan Cathedral in Brasília, he brought curvaceousness to the concrete jungle. In the futuristic federal capital of Brasília, he designed almost all public buildings, and thus became integral to the global image of Brazil.
With rich illustrations documenting highlights from his prolific career, this book introduces Niemeyer’s unique vision and its transformative influence on buildings of business, faith, culture, and the public imagination of Brazil.
