Monograph of globally celebrated architect, Norman Foster.

Norman Foster is a globally recognised figure in architecture. His agency has created more than 300 projects around the world, many of which have profoundly marked and transformed the cities and landscapes in which they reside.

This new monograph, published in partnership with the Centre Pompidou, presents more than 80 of Foster’s key projects, from the Cockpit (1964), a private house in Cornwall, through to Spaceport America (2006-2014), the world’s first terminal for space tourists, built in the desert landscape of New Mexico. Each project is illustrated with drawings, sketches and photographs, placed alongside insightful text.

The book also features an essay by Frédéric Migayrou, curator of an attendant Centre Pompidou exhibition on Foster; a biography by celebrated architectural critic, Philip Jodidio; and an extensive interview with Foster himself. Foster has also contributed an anthology of six analytical texts, written across the broad span of his career.

About the Authors:

Maria Hummer Tuttle practiced law for more than 25 years. She served as chairman of the Getty Board of Trustees and is on the board of numerous museums, arts foundations, and foreign policy, government, and education organizations. She is the co-author of Winfield House, written while her husband was American ambassador to the UK. She lives in Los Angeles and New York.
Edmund de Waal is a British ceramist renowned for his large scale installations of porcelain vessels and the author of award winning books, including The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance and The White Road: Journey into an Obsession. He lives in London.
Miguel Flores Vianna is a photographer and writer whose work appears regularly in a variety of leading international publications. His books include Haute Bohemians and A Wandering Eye: Travels with My Phone. He lives in London.

This first book to comprehensively consider ODA’s range in architecture, from apartment to building to neighborhood. Projects underline a humanistic philosophy seeking community engagement, social connectivity, and above all to inform and uplift.

Some, like 15 Renwick in Manhattan, as observed by Goldberger, “are … well-behaved, and defer to the street more than show off their shape; others, like Bevel in Long Island City, Queens, … are more striking … but they never come off as excessive, as form for form’s sake.”

With chapters moving from Apartment to Building to Block to Neighborhood and a gatefold that reveals an exciting new project destined to enliven the New York skyline, the book’s message underlines ODA’s fundamental understanding that nothing exists in isolation, and the goal of architecture is not just the making of comfortable and visually pleasing places in which to live, but the making of community.

This book showcases the unique vision and work of Olajumoke Adenowo, hailed as "Africa’s starchitect" and Africa's most influential female architect.

Olajumoke Adenowo is a renowned Nigerian architect who heads her own architecture and interior design firm, AD Consulting, which she founded in Lagos in 1994. A gifted student, at the age of 14 she enrolled at Obafemi Awolowo University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours Architecture) by the age of 19, and then completed her Master of Science (Architecture) in 1991.

Adenowo's intense interest in architecture and design emerged from her visits to Europe and throughout the world with her parents as a young child, as well as while living on campus at the Obafemi Awolowo University in the ancient city of Ile-Ife in Osun State, Nigeria, where her parents were professors. Having adopted a global perspective from an early age but firmly rooted in her heritage throughout her career, she is uniquely positioned to directly cultivate the kind of best practice African contemporary architecture that leverages ancestral knowledge and methods from within the continent itself.

Adenowo’s thesis of “Neo-Heritage” envisions a new ideation framework which leverages on African heritage design principles that will contribute to international solutions in the field of architecture.

About the Author:

Olajumoke Adenowo is a multiple award-winning architect who has been described by CNN and The Guardian as "Africa's starchitect”. She has her own boutique architecture and interior design firm, AD Consulting in Lagos, and she regularly lectures on global aesthetics, gender issues, women's empowerment, and African entrepreneurial leadership.

The book is a compendium of homes, including apartments and single-family houses, that have been remodeled to suit contemporary lifestyle needs.

Rehabilitations of living spaces are often done to reanimate existing constructions that, over time, have become impractical, if not obsolete. The challenge is to adapt these existing buildings to contemporary standards while maintaining what might still be useful or what we like about them. Most old buildings are very compartmentalized, reflecting the human habits of their time and the available building technology.

Nowadays, we like to live in much more open and airy spaces — and new building methods allow for the removal of walls that ultimately free up space. We renovate and upgrade living spaces to various degrees, ranging anywhere from upgrading fixtures and appliances to removing and reconstructing walls and expanding buildings. Dominique Clévenot is a professor at the University of Toulouse and is the author of several books on Islamic art.
Gérard Degeorge has contributed to several books on Islamic art and architecture, including The Art of the Islamic Tile and Damascus.
