Dmytro Soloviov

Ukraine’s overlooked modernist buildings are under threat from development, decommunization and war. Photographer Dmytro Soloviov has crossed Ukraine documenting them to form the most comprehensive publication available on the subject.

What does Ukrainian Modernist architecture look like and why isn’t it better-known in the west?

Photographer and architectural tour guide Dmytro Soloviov is fighting to preserve the disappearing modernist heritage of his native Ukraine.

These innovative buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avant-garde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war.

From masterpieces such as the Kyiv Crematorium and Salut Hotel, to previously undocumented examples like the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station, Soloviov has traversed Ukraine photographing the exteriors and interiors of these important buildings and their monumental art (mosaics, stained glass and sculptures). While the nation’s attention is consumed by more existential matters, he has documented the unique identity of one of the least catalogued periods of Soviet architecture, his images forming a singular record of an unexpected and rapidly disappearing legacy.

An introduction by renowned architecture critic Owen Hatherley, complete with historical images, cements these buildings in a cultural and political context. With over 120 examples across 240 pages, this publication is the most comprehensive available on the subject.

Norbert Wolf

Издательство: Prestel

Now available in a new format, this lavishly illustrated volume explores Art Deco art and design from its origin to its present day influences.

The Art Deco style is so recognizable and widespread that its original influence on the culture in which it emerged has been all but lost in the clutter of imitation. This book draws our attention back to the birth of Art Deco — a period between two devastating world wars when industrialization was flourishing, interest in archaeology was peaking, and movements such as Cubism, Constructivism, Futurism, and Modernism were turning the art world on its head. Brilliantly designed to reflect the style it celebrates, Art Deco is filled with hundreds of examples of painting, architecture, interiors, jewellery, crafts, furniture, and fashion.

Author Norbert Wolf traces the chronology of the Art Deco style by looking at the politics and culture of Europe in the 1920s and early 1930s, and the artistic movements that paralleled its popularity. He follows Art Deco’s influence in Europe and its immigration to the Americas and Asia. Most importantly, this wide-ranging volume looks beyond the era of Art Deco’s origination to the present day. Pointing to the numerous revivals and contemporary echoes in painting and even literature, this beautiful volume demonstrates that Art Deco is alive and well today — often in forms where we least expect it.

Now available in a new edition, this sumptuous volume explores key aspects of Art Nouveau — decorative arts, architecture, fashion, dance, advertising, and more — with an in-depth approach and stunning illustrations.

The Art Nouveau movement became an international phenomenon at the beginning of the twentieth century that ushered in the era of modernity in almost every aspect of cultural life. For decades critics have argued that Art Nouveau was not an artistic period in its own right, but an amalgam of artists and styles that served as a bridge between neoclassicism and modernism. In this comprehensive, authoritative, and copiously illustrated book, art historian Norbert Wolf explores Art Nouveau as a logical outgrowth of the historic forces in which it arose.

This book focuses on the movement's wide variety of applications and reclaims its prominence in the pantheon of modern art history. Chapters on aesthetics, spirituality, and the cult of beauty offer luminous examples of works by Mucha, Gaudí, Hoffmann, Klimt, Horta, Munch, and Tiffany, among many others. Wolf's text is both informed and accessible, providing an exciting narrative that brings the Art Nouveau movement into clear focus. Beautifully produced to appeal to a wide range of readers, this new edition gives one of the world's most popular styles the serious consideration it deserves.

About the Author:

Norbert Wolf is an art historian and author based in Munich. He has published several books with Prestel, including Art NouveauArt DecoImpressionism, and "The Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish Painting", as well as monographs on Albrecht Dürer and Titian.

From luxury apartment towers to offices, places of worship to museums, Brutalist architecture is having a 21st-century moment — and this book is here to explore the new interpretations of the style.

From luxury apartment towers to offices, places of worship to museums, brutalist architecture is having a 21st-century moment -- and this book is here to explore the new interpretations of the style. Designed with the same bold aesthetic that informed Le Corbusier himself, this book features fifty recent examples of how architects around the world are embracing the principles of brutalism -- simplicity, functionality, and rawness -- reimagining them for today's standards and tastes. Drawing from the radical approach of the controversial architectural movement, today's Brutalist buildings are both sophisticated and elegant. As the hundreds of exterior and interior photos in this book reveal, architects have taken advantage of new technology to make concrete-based structures that are refined and alluring, as well as stylish and modish unlike their predecessors. Each chapter is dedicated to a different type of building and is introduced with a selection of iconic structures as an essential visual reference for Brutalism's new look. In some instances the overall strength of the aesthetic is paired with equally forceful materials such as glass, metal and brick; other examples show how classically brutalist lines are integrated into generously proportioned, light-filled spaces. An informative celebration of Brutalist architecture's legacy, this book is an exciting exploration of how today's most innovative architects are discovering the inherent beauty of powerful concrete volumes that was at the heart of Le Corbusier's original vision.

Concrete architecture from the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea

Containing over 140 exclusive photographs – ranging from private homes to football stadia – across every region of the country, Brutalist Italy is the first publication to focus entirely on this subject.

What makes Italian Brutalist buildings different to their counterparts in other countries? Containing over 140 exclusive photographs – ranging from private homes to churches and cemeteries via football stadia – across every region of the country, Brutalist Italy is the first publication to focus entirely on this subject.

Architectural photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego (authors of Soviet Asia) have spent the past five years travelling over 20,000 kilometres documenting the monumental concrete structures of their native country.

Brutalism – with its minimalist aesthetic, favouring raw materials and structural elements over decorative design – has a complex relationship with Italian history. After World War II, Italian architects were keen to distance themselves from fascism, without rejecting the architectural modernism that had flourished during that era. They developed a form of contemporary architecture that engaged with traditional methods and materials, drawing on uncontaminated historical references. This plurality of pasts assimilated into new constructions is a recurring feature of the country’s Brutalist buildings, imparting to them a unique identity.

From the imposing social housing of Le Vele di Scampia to the celestial Our Lady of Tears Sanctuary, Syracuse – Brutalist Italy collects the most compelling examples of this extraordinary architecture for the first time in a single volume.

With an introduction by Adrian Forty, The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

Once hailed as icons of radical experimentation and creative ambition, the concrete structures of the mid-to-late 20th century, which have become a defining subject of Stefano Perego’s photographic exploration, continue to stir both admiration and debate. Through the scope of his lens, Perego invites readers to reflect on the era that has shaped these relics of visionary modernism and the ideals they embody.

Whether celebrated landmarks or forgotten outliers, enduring symbols of artistic ingenuity or imposing expressions of misappropriated power, Concrete, mon amour unpacks the intricate narratives embedded in these architectural giants. It considers their paradoxical nature: raw yet deliberate, unadorned yet unapologetically evocative.

By capturing their permanence in diverse settings — urban or remote, pristine or weathered — this book compels a deeper interrogation into what sustains their continued relevance — their sheer monumentality, the audacity of their forms, or the honesty of their materials. Ultimately, the significance of these once-revolutionary visions lies not in answers but in the questions they leave behind.

About the Author:

Stefano Perego is a Milan-based architectural photographer renowned for exploring European modernist, brutalist, and postmodern structures. Celebrated for his ability to portray both the monumental and the intimate, Perego’s work invites thoughtful reflection on the ideals and contradictions inherent in modernism’s impact on the built environment.

This book features over 30 Wabi-sabi style projects from around the world, ranging from commercial spaces such as hotels, showrooms and restaurants to residences, and showcases the use of Wabi-sabi elements in contemporary interior design.

In recent years, Japanese minimalism has become an emerging design force, and the essence of the Wabisabi aesthetic, the core of traditional Japanese aesthetics, is a simple beauty that can stand the test of time. Based on the concept of 'not stripping away its rhythm', designers have 'transformed' the traditional Wabi-sabi style to create a modern Wabi-sabi that is more in tune with modern aesthetic sensibilities. From the tennis player Maria Sharapova and American socialite Khloe Kardashian, to the domestic winner of the Asian Hotel Design Award, Wabi-sabi has become one of the hottest styles of the moment.

This book features over 30 Wabi-sabi style projects from around the world, ranging from commercial spaces such as hotels, showrooms and restaurants to residences, and presents a comprehensive look at the use of Wabi-sabi elements in contemporary interior design. Many of the most influential designers in the wabi-sabi genre are featured, including those who have created their own wabi-sabi homes.

• A collection of modern wabi-sabi projects from around the world, looking at how different designers have played with elements of the same style
• A break from the traditional wabi-sabi style and a modern approach to design, redefining wabi-sabi for better reference, enjoyment and practicality
• The book's layout is simple and clean, with transitional pages that incorporate elements of Japanese kusanshui and an overall colour palette of earthy tones common to the wabi-sabi style
• A foreword by Ukrainian designer Sergey Makhno on how the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi has inspired thinking about the meaning of life and led him on his own design journey

Perspectives on Heritage, Transformation, and Community Dynamics in East European and Eurasian Microrayons

This research offers a deep dive into the architectural and social landscapes of East European and Eurasian microrayons. Through the lens of heritage, transformation, and community dynamics, this book sheds light on often overlooked narratives in Soviet urban development from the 1960s forwards and their continuations following the breakup of the USSR.

From legislative transformations in Uzbekistan to community-driven spatial transformations in Georgia, each chapter presents a nuanced perspective on the legacy of urbanism in the former USSR. This academic project is one of few, following the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, to take a look at both sides of the front line. The authors also examine developments in the Baltic States, Caucasus, and Central Asia.

The book at hand presents thirteen ‘district stories’ from seven post-Soviet countries, written by experts from a variety of disciplines, including architecture, urban and regional planning, public policy and social sciences, and human geography. The authors present observations of spatial, social, and functional transformations as well as of the formal and informal frameworks, planning strategies, and concepts that lay behind the physical development. They discuss spatial patterns and their modifications with a view to future heritage-sensitive development of the neighbourhoods. They point out unique details and the fact that genius loci makes a difference. The contributions formulate new narratives for large housing estates from the 1960s and identify the potential challenges in responsible planning and the need for action.
