Rem Koolhaas, Bruce Mau
ID: 6963
Видавництво: Monacelli Press

S,M,L,XL presents a selection of the remarkable visionary design work produced by the Dutch firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.) and its acclaimed founder, Rem Koolhaas, in its first twenty years, along with a variety of insightful, often poetic writings. The inventive collaboration between Koolhaas and designer Bruce Mau is a graphic overture that weaves together architectural projects, photos and sketches, diary excerpts, personal travelogues, fairy tales, and fables, as well as critical essays on contemporary architecture and society.

The book's title is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. While Small and Medium address issues ranging from the domestic to the public, Large focuses on what Koolhaas calls "the architecture of Bigness." Extra-Large features projects at the urban scale, along with the important essay "What Ever Happened to Urbanism?" and other studies of the contemporary city. Running throughout the book is a "dictionary" of an adventurous new Koolhaasian language - definitions, commentaries, and quotes from hundreds of literary, cultural, artistic, and architectural sources.

About the Authors:

Rem Koolhaas is founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.); the firm's most important projects include the Lille Grand Palais in Lille; the Kunsthal in Rotterdam; Netherlands Dance Theatre in The Hague; Nexus Housing in Fukuoka; the Dutch House in Holland; and Villa dall'Ava in Paris, all of which are included in S,M,L,XL. Koolhaas is the author of the seminal Delirious New York and professor in practice of architecture and urban design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Bruce Mau founded the critically acclaimed firm Bruce Mau Design in 1985. He is the author of Life Style, Massive Change and Bruce Mau: MC24

Hailing from Vienna, Rudolph Michael Schindler (1887–1953) emigrated to Chicago in 1914, like his lifelong friend and rival Richard Neutra. Eventually hired by Frank Lloyd Wright to work in Los Angeles, Schindler took cues from notions found in Cubism and the International Style to shape his unique vision: a style he called “space architecture,” combining geometrical shapes, bold lines, and materials such as wood and concrete, with space as a medium in its own right, one to be controlled just like colour or mass.

This radical approach earned Schindler little recognition in his lifetime — but today, he is hailed as one of America’s most important Modernist pioneers. Discover such key projects as the Wolfe House, nestled in a steep hillside; the tree house-like Falk Apartment Building; the Lovell Beach House, recognized as one of the foremost examples of the Modernist canon in America; the Schindler/Chace House, Schindler’s most crucial work and his personal practice and home, which he shared with his family and that of Neutra.

From private homes to small commercial buildings, Schindler’s groundbreaking designs heralded a new era of contemporary construction. This collection is complete with a map locating all of the architect’s most renowned projects, detailed entries, floor plans, as well as crisp photography of each structure and its interiors.

Master innovator: Challenging accepted notions of architecture

From emergency relief shelters to a cardboard cathedral and exhibition spaces in shipping containers, Pritzker-prize winning architect Shigeru Ban has made his name with his restlessly inventive response to material and situation, as much as with his humanitarian work at the sites of natural and man-made disasters.

In the spirit of three-dimensional poetry, Ban uses materials as an incorporated part of his design, selected not for their cutting-edge credentials but rather for their expressive ability, their capacity to convey the building’s overall concept. In particular, Ban has made regular use of paper tubing in projects as varied as the Japanese Pavilion at Expo 2000 and emergency shelters for Rwanda’s Byumba Refugee Camp.

This essential introduction, compiled with Ban’s own collaboration, presents every one of his projects to date to survey the full reach and importance of, in the words of the Pritzker Prize jury, a “committed teacher who is not only a role model for a younger generation but also an inspiration.”

Paper palaces. Beauty meets basic human needs

Updated with over a dozen recent projects, including the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch and the Aspen Art Museum, the Shigeru Ban monograph celebrates the innovative, elegant, and altruistic practice of the Pritzker-prize winning architect, lauded for his “total curiosity and commitment; endless innovation; infallible eye; acute sensibility.”

From a house without walls to exhibition spaces in shipping containers, Shigeru Ban has constantly challenged architectural rule and expectation. In the age of the “starchitect,” he has also demonstrated a commitment to humanitarian practice: Over the course of his esteemed career, his inventive, elegant designs have been applied as much to private commissions as to emergency relief work at the sites of natural and man-made disasters around the world, from Kobe to New Orleans.

For the Pritzker Prize jury, which chose Ban as its 2014 winner, the architect manifests “total curiosity and commitment; endless innovation; an infallible eye; an acute sensibility.” This updated monograph, compiled with the architect’s collaboration, brings together every one of Ban's built works, including such recent projects as the Tamedia headquarters in Zurich, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch.

Thomas Kligerman
ID: 14953
Видавництво: Monacelli Press

Named to the 2022 Architectural Digest AD100 list

Named to the 2022 Elle Decor A-List

Over the past forty years, Thomas Kligerman has been immersed in the history of residential architecture, weaving together sources from English and European traditions with the American vernacular, particularly the puebloan style of the Southwest and the shingle style that has prevailed along the East Coast since the late nineteenth century. A staple on the AD100 list, Kligerman has woven together these strands of domestic architecture to create his own American aesthetic.

Shingle and Stone: Thomas Kligerman Houses is a full-career monograph that features a selection of inspiring residences that highlight the evolution of his architectural thinking. Shingle and Stone presents thirteen major highlights from Kligerman’s portfolio, including three projects currently in design. The featured projects are all set in extraordinarily beautiful natural landscapes, from the coasts of Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons, to the forests of South Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and the Pacific Northwest, showcasing the depth and breadth of the architect’s oeuvre. Illustrated with more than 200 spectacular photographs of interiors and exteriors alongside plans, renderings, and sketches that reveal the design process, this new book will immerse readers in the powerfully nuanced language of Kligerman’s architectural vision.

In the architect’s own words, exceptional architecture combines existing styles in order to “move the needle forward,” and this new monograph presents luxurious single-family homes that do exactly that. Written in collaboration with the celebrated design editor Mitchell Owens, Shingle and Stone is an inspirational architectural collection that presents the contemporary traditional design for which Kligerman is known. Beautifully packaged with a vellum jacket over a linen case silkscreened with one of Kligerman’s own hand-drawn sketches, this is the ideal book for both architects and design enthusiasts, and is sure to sit beautifully on any bookshelf, desk, or coffee table.

_________

As a full career monograph, the book will feature iconic Kligerman houses built over the past twenty years and current projects that demonstrate the evolution of his architectural thinking. This will be a “deep dive” into the design process, illustrated by sketches and renderings as well as finished photography.

An introduction by Architectural Digest design editor Mitchell Owens will provide an overview of the trajectory while Kligerman’s own essay will focus on his interest in developing a truly American style that reflects both the Puebloan style of the Southwest and the shingle style that has prevailed in along the East Coast since the late nineteenth century.

Kligerman designs only single-family houses, and his clients have beautiful sites in the Hamptons and throughout New England with a few on the West Coast and in Texas. He is deeply steeped in the history of European and American domestic architecture and wonders whether there is (or can be) an American house paradigm. He grew up in Connecticut and New Mexico so the two strands that he draws on most art the solid adobe forms of Puebloan style and the lighter, more open shingle style. He also considers West Coast architects like Bernard Maybeck and English arts and crafts designers like Vosey and Lutyens. Rather than looking at single, specifc precedents and adapting them for contemporary life, Kligerman tries to incorporate multiple strands to come up with something new – “to move the needle forward,” as he says.

About the Author:

Tom Kligerman was raised in Connecticut and New Mexico and spent years in France and England as a student. These experiences sparked his interest in therich history of domestic architecture, gardens, and landscapes. Before co-founding Ike Kligerman Barkley, he worked at Robert A.M. Stern Architects. He holds a BA from Columbia University and a Master of Architecture from Yale School of Architecture.
Kligerman is active in professional organizations, including the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art, the Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation, where he served as board chair for many years, and the Design Leadership Network.

A dedicated student of the history of residential architecture internationally, Kligerman is a sought-after speaker and tour guide for the work of McKim, Mead & White, Bernard Maybeck, and other iconic figures. He also shares his passion on Instagram where he posts images of houses and intricate details he admires for 31k followers.

Revised edition of the bestselling backlist title. William Morris was an outstanding character of many talents, being an architect, writer, social campaigner, artist and, with his Kelmscott Press, an important figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. Many of us probably know him best, however, from his superb furnishings and textile designs, intricately weaving together natural motifs in a highly stylized two-dimensional fashion influenced by medieval conventions.

Following on from the bestselling success of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Mucha, of the same series, this delightful new book offers a survey of his life and work alongside some of his finest decorative work. A richly beautiful book.

Visual essays showcase the Wonderwall working culture. An in-depth profile, written by the M+ design curator Aric Chen, provides insight into Katayama’s early years, education, key influences, and major professional achievements. Radical Space. How Zaha Hadid created 21st-century architecture

Discover the audacious futurism of Zaha Hadid. As the first woman to win both the Pritzker Prize for architecture and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, Hadid broke the rules and re-defined the game, despite some saying her designs were unbuildable. At the time of her unexpected death in 2016, she was firmly established as the first great architect of the noughties.

Zaha Hadid was a revolutionary architect, who for many years built almost nothing, despite winning critical acclaim. Some even said her audacious, futuristic designs were unbuildable.

During the latter years of her life, Hadid’s daring visions became a reality, bringing a unique new architectural language to cities and structures as varied as the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, hailed by The New York Times as “the most important new building in America since the Cold War”; the MAXXI Museum in Rome; the Guangzhou Opera House in China; and the London 2012 Olympics Aquatics Centre.

At the time of her unexpected death in 2016, Hadid was firmly established among the elite of world architecture, recognized as the first woman to win both the Pritzker Prize for architecture and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, but above all as a giver of new forms, the first great architect of the noughties.

From her early sharply angled buildings to later more fluid architecture that made floors, ceilings, walls, and furniture part of an overall design, this essential introduction presents key examples of Hadid’s pioneering practice. She was an artist, as much as an architect, who fought to break the old rules and crafted her own 21st-century universe.

Houses were Frank Lloyd Wright’s favourite building type from the beginning to the end of his seventy-year career as an architect. To him the house was the centre of family life, symbolized by a warming hearth, and above all a place of repose. As 50 Favourite Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright shows, his ideal home took on an amazing variety of forms.

Here, from the architect’s first period, is his own home and studio in Oak Park, Illinois, an architectural laboratory for him over two decades. His 1920s California works, built of textured concrete blocks, were revolutionary, his 1930s houses, Fallingwater and Taliesin West, internationally renowned. From then until his death in 1959, Wright took on the designed simplified residences, such as the honeycomb-shaped Hanna House, that helped change the look of the modern home.

Each of the examples shown exemplifies Wright’s never-changing principles that a house should be built with nature, achieve harmony through unity and be a work of art — not just a house.

This book presents the radical architectural strategies and poetic cultural projects developed by OPEN Architecture, and the opportunities and challenges that arise from redefining built forms.

Drawing on a series of conversations and site visits to six recent groundbreaking projects, architecture writer Catherine Shaw describes how Beijing-based OPEN Architecture is reinventing and responding to China’s complex and fast-changing cultural landscape with projects that mark a new era for contemporary Chinese cultural architecture. OPEN Architecture was founded in New York in 2003 by Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, while their Beijing office opened in 2008.

From a contemporary art gallery buried beneath a sand dune to a sculptural open-air theatre in a remote mountain valley near the Great Wall, co-founders Li Hu and Huang Wenjing re-evaluate conventional Western assumptions about culture and design as they base each pioneering project on the needs and pleasures of humanity within the context of diverse terrains and climates. In doing so, they not only consider how cultural architecture looks, but how it works. Projects are presented with commentary and contextual information as well as new analyses and archival material, including outstanding color photography, plans and drawings, and exploratory sketches. This book provides a fresh perspective on contemporary cultural architecture and place-making, high-lighting the architects’ sources of inspiration, their challenges, and their construction methods, showing how each impactful project responds to China’s distinctive context.
