Author Achille Salvagni, Text by Pilar Viladas, Foreword by Benoist F. Drut
ID: 16402
Издательство: Rizzoli

A meticulously curated glimpse at the career of a design-world superstar.

"Stylistically, Salvagni is an avowed modernist; his work displays an elegant economy of means that is utterly contemporary," writes Pilar Viladas. "Yes, his work consistently bears the weight of history--not in overt references, but in its material richness, impeccable craftsmanship, and deeply layered narrative."

In the seventeen years since Achille Salvagni founded his design practice in Rome, the architect and designer has become known for his luxurious interiors, including apartments in New York and Palm Beach, a flat overlooking Holland Park in London, and his own apartment in Rome. He has become one of the world's preeminent designers of interiors, for which he has won numerous awards. His limited-edition furniture, lighting, and object designs are sought after both by collectors and by his fellow designers for their own projects.

This is the first monograph on Salvagni, with his best projects organized thematically instead of chronologically. With chapters on Craftsmanship, Heritage, Narrative, Harmony, and Color--among other themes--this monograph will enlighten as well as delight.

About the Authors:

Achille Salvagni was born in Rome in 1970 and graduated with an honors degree in architecture in 1998. In 2002, he created Achille Salvagni Architetti, a multidisciplinary firm for architecture and interior design, developing projects for residential buildings, luxury apartments, and yachts. Pilar Viladas, a former design editor at The New York Times Magazine and T Magazine, writes about design and architecture for a variety of publications. Benoist F. Drut is the owner of the influential New York design gallery Maison Gerard. He was instrumental in the development of a wide range of recognized and emerging artists, including Hervé Van der Straeten, Achille Salvagni, and Kiko Lopez.

The collected early works of Sir David Adjaye, winner of the 2021 RIBA royal gold medal

David Adjaye, the son of a Tanzanian diplomat, spent his childhood moving between international cities before settling in London, where he was educated. Fresh out of the Royal Academy of Art, his early commissions reflected an influential generation of artists at the turn of the millennium with whom he shared a range of sensibilities. His artistic sensitivity, deft use of space and inexpensive, unexpected materials resulted in a number of iconic projects.

With the hindsight of almost twenty years of practice and a raft of high-profile projects around the world – perhaps best symbolized by his National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. – the significance of Adjaye’s earlier projects is clear. Never shying away from a challenge, Adjaye used his first projects as testbeds for what would become his unique, acclaimed and highly sought-after brand of ‘critical regionalism’.

This monograph presents the first projects of Adjaye’s corpus, many little documented. From London’s West End to Brooklyn, clever urban interventions and pavilions to private houses for artists and public buildings for the many. These early projects, brought together and presented with new analyses and recently uncovered archival material, testify to the originality of an architect at the height of his talents who is changing the face of our built world.

The second volume in Thames & Hudson’s monographic series on global architect Sir David Adjaye, winner of the 2021 RIBA royal gold medal

Following on from Adjaye – Works: Houses, Pavilions, Installations, Buildings, 1995–2007, published by Thames & Hudson in 2020, this book covers the impressive portfolio of work created by the architect between 2007 and 2015. During the years covered in this book, David Adjaye became interested in developing an architecture that was more expansive, taking him outside Europe to work on major projects such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo. Designing buildings around the globe, including two projects connected with the post-Katrina reconstruction programme in New Orleans, Adjaye carefully tailored his approach to each place, sensitive to the important role architecture plays in affirming a sense of community and identity.

Elizabeth Meredith Dowling
ID: 14810
Издательство: Rizzoli

First published in 1989, this updated edition celebrates this seminal American architect.

Between 1912 and 1968, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because he was so prolific, the book examines only his most essential work, which as a body represents an architectural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty.

A graduate of Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed one year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize, travelling shortly thereafter to Rome. There he remained for five years, learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

On his return to the U.S., Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose master-piece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia, to design in the Classical and traditional styles some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

About the Author:

Elizabeth Meredith Dowling is an architect who long served as associate professor of architecture at Georgia Tech. In 2020 she received the ICAA Philip Trammell Shutze Lifetime Achievement Award, for her contributions to the fields of architecture, architectural history, and the teaching of design.

Gino Finizio, Alfonso Gambardella
ID: 3279
Издательство: Skira

Finizio’s theme is one we can see on the streets: having changed the 19th-century city into a “metropolis” of suburbs and highways, the car as an object is, in turn, changing in relation to the modern city. A leading Italian design professional, Finizio has gathered an international symposium of architects to explore how urban planning, architecture, and design ideas can create a new design philosophy for the automobile as a sort of domestic moving space that interacts with the new urban environment.

This richly illustrated book focuses on the relationship between the static city and “mobile architecture” of the car through the works of some of the most important contemporary international architects such as Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhass, Jean Nouvel, Massimiliano Fuksas, and Alessandro Mendini. This is an urgent, exciting design mission that finally deals with how thinking about the urban car must coevolve in profound new ways.

Alastair Gordon, Foreword by Ian Volner

Издательство: Rizzoli

A major new evaluation of the trailblazing Miami-based architecture firm upon the advent of its fortieth anniversary. Arquitectonica is the design firm that put Miami on the map for the cool, hip, very now architecture that was first celebrated on TV in Miami Vice. Since their founding four decades ago, the firm has grown exponentially in stature, and its energies have only increased.

Arquitectonica is a major presence on the world architectural stage, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Manila, Dubai, Lima, and São Paulo. Founded in 1977, the firm received critical and popular attention and acclaim almost from its inception, thanks to a bold modernism that was immediately identified with a renaissance in Miami’s urban landscape. Principals Bernardo Fort-Brescia and Laurinda Spear continue to this day exploring and pushing the limits of materials and design with their innovative use of geometry, pattern, and color.

The first book on this major international architectural design firm since Rizzoli’s own Arquitectonica (2004), this volume is a retrospective of the firm’s forty-year history, considering its earliest projects — the archetypal and hugely influential Pink House and Babylon Apartments — to Regalia Condominium tower, its twenty-first-century masterwork of undulant glass and steel.

Text by Livia Debbane

A lavish publication dedicated to Studio Arthur Casas, an acclaimed architecture and interior design practice based in São Paulo and New York.

Arthur Casas has been one of the most prolific and innovative architects in Brazil since the late 1980s. His projects, the work of studios in both São Paulo and New York, can be seen in many of the world’s capitals, including Paris, Tokyo, London, and Lisbon.

Studio Arthur Casas has completed more than 500 projects in different areas, including residential and commercial architecture, public competitions, and interior and product design, in both Brazil and abroad. The firm has gained recognition over the years and received numerous national and international honors such as a World Architecture Festival Award 2015 for the Brazilian Pavilion at the Milan Expo.

Born and raised in São Paulo, Casas is strongly influenced by the city’s cosmopolitan spirit, something that inspires him to stay connected with the design community around the world. This ethos marks all of Casas’s work, which is defined by a very eclectic and ever-changing creativity.

Casas strongly believes that architecture and interior design are inextricably related: he visualizes and embraces the spaces he designs on the condition of including the furniture that was created or chosen for them. Being a craftsman himself, he aims to create simple designs freed from all unnecessary details, imbued with artisanal qualities.

The book features works by internationally acclaimed photographers Filippo Bamberghi, Fernando Guerra, winner of the Architectural Photographer of the Year 2015, and artist Mauro Restiffe.

Alastair Gordon, Foreword by Pilar Viladas
ID: 16325
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first monograph illustrating the high-end contemporary residential design of Barnes Coy Architects.

Throughout their twenty-five-year commitment to modern design, Barnes Coy Architects have specialized in one-of-a-kind dream houses designed for those who prefer to live in highly spatial and modern ways. Assembled in Light is the first exclusive look at this firm's previously unpublished body of high-end residential work.

These leisure homes gleam in the sun like sleek, finely tuned machines. Everything has been custom designed, custom made, custom treated. The houses are tastefully furnished with one-of-a-kind artisanal pieces (by Wendell Castle, Chris Lehrecke, etc.) and museum-quality collections of contemporary art hanging on the walls (such as works by Anselm Kiefer, Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, and Cindy Sherman). They feature infinity pools, outdoor and indoor kitchens, roof decks, temperature-controlled wine cellars, and numerous guest rooms, as well as ten-foot-high doorways and floor-to-ceiling swathes of tempered glass to better gaze out at the dunes and ocean views.

The new photography beautifully captures the architects' attention to detail and love of specialized materials, whether it's Carrara marble from Italy or teak from Bali. While most of the houses are located in the Hamptons in New York, a few are found as far afield as Costa Rica, California, Georgia, and Westchester County. All but three homes were built on commanding waterfront sites.

About the Authors:

Alastair Gordon is an award-winning critic and author who has written regularly about architecture and design for many publications including the New York TimesVanity Fair, and Architectural Digest. Pilar Viladas is a design writer and editor.

Lauren Rottet, Foreword by Paul Goldberger
ID: 16380
Издательство: Rizzoli

A luxurious presentation of the work of a celebrated American designer and architect known for creating spaces that balance modern simplicity and historic detail.

This book features the work of Lauren Rottet over the past fifteen years and includes the interiors of houses, apartments, hotels, and design studio offices in the wide range of styles at which Rottet Studio is adept, from elegant Modernism to Beaux-Arts classicism. Rottet-designed spaces are artfully curated living/working spaces that transcend their formal use and become places in which people ponder, experience, and are inspired. These environments, though immediately beautiful to the eye, are not meant to be one-moment impacts and instead are designed to reveal themselves over time. Above all, her elegant, contemporary designs, like pieces of art, emphasize transparency and light.

“A minimalist at heart,” Rottet “would happily live in a white box with beautiful light.” But her influences are varied and her love of historic architecture, art, lovely objects, and well-edited decoration is deep, as is evident in her work.

About the Author:

Lauren Rottet, president and founding principal of Rottet Studio, is one of the most celebrated interior architects in the world today with an extraordinary record of awards, publications, lectures, juries, and honors. Paul Goldberger, whom the Huffington Post has called “the leading figure in architecture criticism,” is now a contributing editor at Vanity Fair.

Bruno Taut (1880–1938) is generally considered to be the leading housing estate architect of the modern era. Utilizing the latest architectural techniques and concentrating on the needs of the people who were to inhabit his creations, he made a lasting impression on the housing construction of his time not only because of the impressive quantities of 10,000 flats.

This updated and revised publication is homage to one of the most significant personalities of the 20th century. It presents the extensive catalogue of Bruno Taut’s works, among them the famous Berlin housing estates such as the "Hufeisensiedlung" ("Horseshoe Development"), the garden city Falkenberg "Tuschkastensiedlung" (dubbed the "Inx Box Colony") and the forested housing estate "Onkel Toms Hütte" ("Uncle Tom’s Cabin").

Each project is portrayed by means of texts, plans as well as historic and contemporary photos. Proven experts lead through the creative work and life of Bruno Taut showing in several introductory essays that he was not only city planner, designer and social reformer but also above all artist – and therefore truly deserved to be honored as "Master of Colorful Architecture".

Author Alberto Campo Baeza, Text by Richard Meier and David Chipperfield and Kenneth Frampton
ID: 15661
Издательство: Rizzoli

A comprehensive survey of the work of a master of modernist design today.

Alberto Campo Baeza, one of contemporary architecture’s most distinguished voices, is renowned for a body of work that exudes the power of radical simplicity. The architectural ideas expressed in his buildings have ranged in scale from such small but beautiful residential structures as the Turégano, Gaspar, and De Blas houses to cultural facilities such as Andalucia’s Museum of Memory in Granada, an addition to his earlier achievement, the Caja General Bank Headquarters. All share an uncompromising dedication to simple composition and demonstrate the ways in which he so brilliantly deploys disciplined restraint to achieve architectural silence in the face of the clamor of the modern city.

This monograph features projects spanning four decades of international architectural practice. Contributions by Richard Meier and David Chipperfield offer critical commentary on Campo Baeza’s persistent quest for beauty and relevance through his adherence to simplicity and a deeply felt devotion to modernist principles of architecture.

About the Author:

Alberto Campo Baeza is the founding principal of his eponymous architecture studio and emeritus head professor of design at the Madrid School of Architecture, ETSAM, where he has been a tenured professor for more than thirty-five years. Richard Meier received his architectural training at Cornell University and began his career in the early 1960s designing projects that have become icons of modern architecture. David Chipperfield founded his own architecture practice in 1985, which comprises offices in London, Berlin, Milan, and Shanghai. Architect, critic, historian, and author Kenneth Frampton is the Emeritus Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University, where he taught from 1972 to 2020.
