Ellen Lupton
ID: 18794
Издательство: Princeton Architectural Press

Legendary designer Ellen Lupton demystifies the creative process in another essential graphic design book.

Graphic Design Thinking explores a variety of techniques to stimulate fresh thinking to arrive at compelling and viable solutions. Each approach is explained with a brief narrative text followed by a variety of visual demonstrations and case studies. Lupton's hands-on, close-up approach, made famous with Thinking with Type, makes the creative process accessible to anyone and removes the myth that creativity is an in-born talent.

Presents a wide range of methods applicable to any brainstorming scenario.

• Techniques are grouped around the three basic phases of the design process: defining the problem, inventing ideas, and creating form
• From informal strategies that are ideal for quick, seat-of-the-pants thinking, to formal research methods
• Learn to approach problems through focus groups, interviewing, brand mapping, and co-design

Includes discussions with leading professional designers. Art Chantry, Ivan Chermayeff, Jessica Helfand, Steven Heller, Abbott Miller, Christoph Niemann, Paula Scher, and Martin Venezk reveal how they get ideas and overcome blocks to creativity.

__________

Graphic Design Thinking is directed at working designers, design students, and anyone who wants to apply inventive thought patterns to everyday creative challenges in the design process.

Creativity is more than an inborn talent. It is a hard-earned skill that, like all skills, improves with practice. Graphic Design Thinking explores a variety of techniques --- from quick, seat-of-the-pants approaches to more formal research methods -- -for stimulating fresh thinking and solving design problems. Brainstorming techniques are grouped around the three main phases of the design process: defining problems, getting ideas, and creating form. Visual demonstrations and case studies show the design processes and solutions at work. What comes to mind when you think of graphite? Is it the stains that stay on your fingers, or the beautiful gradients that can result from simply playing with pressure? Through skilfully applied smudges and smears, the humble pencil is capable of expressing minute details and textures in myriad shades of grey, creating layered universes that draw viewers into their folds.

From the fine and crisp work produced with an H-grade to the fuzzier, ink-like impressions by the B end, Graphite collates some of the most stunning, hand-drawn contemporary pencil art across the lead spectrum, along with exclusive interviews with renowned pencil artists Amandine Urruty, Armando Veve, and Dukhoon Gim. Step into an enigmatic world of monochrome chronicling a unique perspective or story on every page, brought to life by 28 artists and illustrators from around the globe.

This book is suitable for those who work with automated text and image design. It shows examples of working correctly on a conceptual level. Exact directions for using all of the grid systems presented (8 to 32 grid fields) are given to the user. These can be used for the most varied of projects. The three-dimensional grid is treated as well. Put simply: a guidebook from the profession for the profession.

The development of organisational systems in visual communication was the service and the accomplishment of the representatives of simple and functional typography and graphic design. In the 1920s in Europe, works already arose in the areas of typography, graphic design and photography with objectified conception and rigid composition. In 1961 a brief presentation of the grid with text and illustrations appeared for the first time in an earlier book by the author. Articles published mainly in trade journals then followed.

This book now attempts to close a gap by giving examples and exact directions to the professional concerning all grid problems that can occur.

The author, a world-renowned professional, thus offers his colleagues the tools to solve problems more easily.

Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the twenty-first century through a series of detailed non-fictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence — they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe.

Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirror the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe.

The twenty-first century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated and protective society. Yet the scale of authoritarian intervention and their stealth design adds to the growing difficulty of linking cause and effect. Handbook of Tyranny gives a profound insight into the relationship between political power, territoriality and systematic cruelties.

This new edition includes updated figures and eight additional pages.

About the Author:

Theo Deutinger (*1971) is an architect, writer and curator. He is the founder and head of The Department (TD), a practice that combines architecture with research, visualization and artistic thinking. With TD he works at all scales from global planning, spatial master plans, architecture to graphic and curatorial work. Deutinger is known for his theoretical writings on the transformation of European urban culture, and his socio-cultural studies such as the “Handbook of Tyranny.” His work has been shown at the Design Biennale Kwangju (2011), the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale (2014) and the Storefront for Architecture in New York (2019), among others. For some time in the distant past, hand-lettering used to be a highly-regarded skill to master and was ubiquitous via publications and public signages. Although society relies heavily on keyboards and screens for communication today, a growing number of creative practitioners have been busy reviving the seemingly-lost art in recent years, in a bid to return the sincerity and warmth of the human touch to our predominantly digital lives. Brimming with character, hand-lettering serves as the bridge between old-school calligraphy and modern typography to bring nuance back into an age of uniformity.

As an update of the original release in 2017, the ‘Handstyle Lettering’ 2022 edition rereleased in conjunction with Victionary’s 20th anniversary is a delightful showcase of artworks from around the world that are anything but unvaried. With an additional selection of new projects, the book also features insightful interviews from the best calligraphers as well as an expanded, beginner-friendly guide/practice area.
