The history of photography is teeming with portraits of musicians made iconic by their album covers: Thelonious Monk by W. Eugene Smith, Miles Davis by Irving Penn, Grace Jones by Jean-Paul Goude, Laurie Anderson by Robert Mapplethorpe.

The history of album cover art also includes collaborations between prominent figures, such as Mick Rock and David Bowie, Annie Leibovitz and John Lennon, Lee Friedlander and John Coltrane, Nobuyoshi Araki and Björk, Anton Corbijn and U2, and Robert Frank with the Rolling Stones ― not to mention Francis Wolff’s legendary work with Blue Note, the record label he cofounded.

Musicians and designers have also sifted through photography’s rich history for powerful photographs to match and keep company with the music enclosed within: Anders Petersen’s classic Café Lehmitz portrait of a man nestling into a woman’s bosom stands in for Tom Waits on the cover of Swordfishtrombones; Big Star and Alex Chilton push the listener into a corner with William Eggleston’s Red Ceiling on their album Radio City; Rage Against the Machine goes for the jugular on its self-titled album with the anonymous Vietnam War photo of the self-immolation of a Buddhist monk. Images like the Abbey Road crosswalk are deeply inscribed in our collective memory, yet few details are known about the photographer.

All of these ― and more ― are included in this compendium of electrifying images and the albums they grace. Includes albums featuring images by David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Anton Corbijn, Roy DeCarava, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Luigi Ghirri, Jean-Paul Goude, Brian Griffin, William Klein, David LaChapelle, Danny Lyon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Ryan McGinley, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Anders Petersen, Pierre et Gilles, Hiro, Cindy Sherman, W. Eugene Smith, Pennie Smith, Juergen Teller, Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol, Albert Watson, William Wegman, and more.

Around the world in 1424 days: the epic voyage behind the making of the book 1000 Families

Part travel journal, part scrapbook, this unique book traces the four-year, 250,000-km journey of photographer Uwe Ommer during the making of TASCHEN’s 1000 Families. Called a “family album of planet earth,” 1000 Families is a vast collection of portraits taken by Ommer in over 130 countries in all corners of the world. Naturally, a voyage of such epic proportions bears its fair share of anecdotes, adventures, mishaps, and souvenirs, and Transit traces the experience via stories and images. From closed borders and broken bridges to late rainy seasons, curious customs officers, thieves, coups d’état, raging fevers, and a far from “unbreakable” Land Rover, Ommer found truth in the maxim “just about everything that can go wrong, will.” This amusing and original compilation paints a vivid picture of what it’s like to travel to the most remote corners of the globe for four years, meeting countless people and observing the great cultural and social similarities and differences that mark the human race.

About the photographer:
Uwe Ommer
became fascinated with photography at a young age and in 1962 moved to Paris, where he initially worked as a photographer’s assistant. Within a few years, he opened his own photography studio, primarily shooting fashion and advertising photos. Quickly gaining respect for his work in Paris, Ommer began showing in local galleries and eventually published his first book, Photoedition Uwe Ommer, in 1979, a collection of personal and advertising works. In the following years, he would publish five more books of his photographs. In 2002, Uwe Ommer was awarded an Honorary Fellowship to the Royal Photographic Society for the impact of his lifetime of work. His other books for TASCHEN include Black Ladies, Asian Ladies, Transit, and 1000 Families.

Petter Hegre

Shot over a period of five years, in Tuscany Nudes Hegre shows more than 100 photographs that pay homage to the Renaissance, the flowing contours of his exquisitely proportioned female figures against a backdrop of elegant palaces. Hegre's nudes are completely natural, no artifice or accessories, the combination a blend of the classic and contemporary – the realization of Hegre's youthful ambitions. We are in these photographs at once both in the present and transported back to some mystical time and place. Hegre has worked alone, without assistants, using primarily natural light and the rich ingredients of Tuscany; wine, olive oil, grape. A good proportion of the photographs in Tuscany Nudes was created at Villa Mangiacane, the 16th century stately home built for the Machiavelli family. The South African owner Glynn Cohen has restored the house and gardens to their original splendor, the ancient statuary and mesmerising pools creating a feeling that in Tuscany, time is eternal, as are Petter Hegre's photographs in this memorable collection.

Twilight of the Romanovs opens a door onto the world of pre-revolutionary Russia in original photographs taken during the last decades of Romanov rule.

These photographs are snapshots of a vanished world and include many remarkable colour images created using an early three-colour-plate technique which bring the remote past to life with an especially vivid jolt.

The Russian Empire was soon to be destroyed and rendered unrecognizable. Yet these images reveal a surprising continuity: despite the subsequent cataclysm, faces, postures, buildings and landscapes still resonate with those who see them a century and more later.

The Russian Empire was torn between a rural population living almost medieval lives and the industrial and social change in the cities. The Tsar’s gigantic realm struggled with modernity and with its own internal contradictions between Asia and Europe; faith and science; ethnic divisions; and the divergent interests of the aristocracy, the middle classes, the urban workers and the rural poor. This continent of contradictions was captured by authors from Tolstoy to Chekhov, from Gogol to Gorky and Bely.

In an increasingly mobile society, it’s common to cross the globe many times in a single month. Journeys that might once have taken weeks, now take hours. All of this travel is a suitable metaphor for Andrew Macpherson’s rise to the pinnacle of celebrity photography. He has literally travelled the world to profile the best-known people of our age; Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, and George Clooney to name a few. As he’s done so, he’s also embarked on an artistic journey to bring something fresh and inviting to each of his images. In this quest, he employs a multitude of varied techniques, playing with form, context and colour. A note of poignancy overshadows this work. Many of the original negatives were lost in a warehouse fire. It is a testament to the strength of Macpherson’s work that even scanned from magazine pages - as some of these images are - the results still radiate vitality and power.

Originally from London, Andrew Macpherson is now based in Los Angeles. His body of work includes covers for Rolling Stone and Vogue. He has photographed personalities as varied as Bono, Muhammed Ali, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone and John Malkovich.

From the Italian luxury sports car to the Swiss chronograph — the ultimate collection of the best, most exclusive, and most luxurious toys for men

There are only two notable differences between toys for little boys and toys for grown-up boys: the toys get bigger with age — and more expensive. Matchbox cars give way to high-end sports cars, model boats become motorboats and sailing yachts, and the plastic wristwatch turns into a Swiss chronograph with a perpetual calendar and minute repeater. The Toys for Men series has always stayed abreast of this male drive to play; in the latest volume, we present the ultimate wish list, a selection of the most exclusive, most innovative, and most luxurious toys that men with money can buy. Of course, the list includes the classic male fantasies of executive jets, mega- yachts, and super sports cars — the truly giant and great things that move men in the air, on water, or on land. But it also includes the little gadgets — from headphones and wristwatches to SLR cameras — that make tech-loving men’s hearts beat a little faster. We also include the vices that speak to connoisseurs, like that special bottle of Spanish wine or one from the USA, Scottish whiskey, or cigars from the Dominican Republic. And last but not least, we include one of the greatest luxuries of all: having a product tailored to you and you alone, bespoke-style. But we’re not just talking about custom-tailored suits. Cars, golf clubs, skis, nearly everything today can be customized to suit your particular tastes. If you’re searching for the ultimate toys for the gentleman who has everything, you’ll hit pay dirt here. Because as philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche already knew, “There is a child hidden in every man: and it wants to play.”

The author, MICHAEL BRUNNBAUER, has been working in the media for ten years. After studying Economics at the European Business School (EBS) University of Business and Law in Oestrich-Winkel, Germany, he worked as an investment banker for Deutsche Bank. In 2005, he started studying at the Deutsche Journalistenschule (DJS) in Munich and after his studies, worked for the Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) daily newspaper and the magazine Gentlemen’s Quarterly (GQ). Michael Brunnbauer is now head of the men’s lifestyle magazine Provocateur for Meth Media Verlag in Austria. He founded the magazine in 2011 with Alexander Meth, a publisher. He is also a freelance writer for magazines and newspapers such as Robb Report, Die Weltwoche and Wired. His main topics include cars, watches, consumer electronics and design. Michael Brunnbauer grew up in Munich and has lived in London and San Diego. He’s a passionate collector of watches and whiskys.

An opulent photo book that opens up a world full of luxury, pleasure, and aesthetic beauty to the reader
