Richard Avedon, Anne Hollander
ID: 7154
Издательство: Abrams

Among the significant projects of the last years of his life, Richard Avedon (1923–2004) completed a book of his photographs of women.

Always transcending categorization - he was both a fashion photographer and known as a “poet of portraiture” - Avedon was interested in seeing how elemental facts of modern life and human existence were reflected in his work. And what could be more elemental than women, who have mesmerized artists across the centuries? Looking at his work in this way, Avedon was able to create an unparalleled view of women in his time, a tumultuous half-century of rapidly changing social mores, cultural ideals, popular styles, and high fashion. As an artist, he was deeply responsive to nuances of expression, gesture, and comportment, and his photographs unfailingly opened a window to the interior lives of his subjects.

These ranged from celebrities (Marilyn Monroe), artists (Maria Callas, Isak Dinesen), and high-fashion models (Suzy Parker, Kate Moss) to women who simply drew his attention. Like the best of art and literature, Avedon's portraits evoke rich lives and complex experiences. An incisive essay by art historian Anne Hollander offers an overview of a half-century of Avedon's images of women.

About the Authors:

Richard Avedon was one of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th century. His portrait work comprises an authoritative record of our era and he redefined the fashion photograph. In 1992, he became the first staff photographer of The New Yorker.

Anne Hollander is the author of several books, including Feeding the Eye, Moving Pictures, and Seeing Through Clothes.

Ruven Afanador
ID: 14236
Издательство: Rizzoli

An evocative celebration of the men of gypsy flamenco culture, from one of contemporary photography’s most gifted artists. Known for his edgy photographs, Ruven Afanador amazes again with another collection of images that will seduce and delight. Following up on Mil Besos — which focused on the women of flamenco — Afanador turns his powerful vision to the men of flamenco, with startling results. Photographed in Andalusian Spain, these unique images present a universe inhabited by gypsies, musicians, and most of all the male flamenco dancers, full of beauty and bravado. Captured in arranged poses or in mid-dance, the dancers embody the wild, youthful passion inherent in the musical world of flamenco. As likely to be in gorgeous costumes as in the nude, these men exude gritty glamour, innate classicism, and a singularly charged eroticism. Combining the surreal glamour of fashion with documentary photography, these striking black-and-white images will appeal to both the fashion crowd as well as the serious art photography audience.

About the Author:

Ruven Afanador has achieved an exceptional career photographing the emblematic figures of contemporary fashion, music, and film.

There has never been -- and will never be -- another nightclub to rival the sheer glamour, energy, and wild creativity that was Studio 54. This catalog accompanies an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum exploring how Studio 54 was a unique zeitgeist of an era.

From the moment it opened in 1977, Studio 54 celebrated spectacle and promised a never-ending parade of anything goes. Although it existed for only three years, it served as a catalyst that brought together some of the most famous, creative, and strangest people in the world. It quickly became known for its all-ages celebrity guest list and its uniquely chic clientele of superstars and freaks of all races and sexual preferences who would often show up half-dressed or in costume. From the cutting-edge lighting displays and sound system to its elaborate sets that would change on a whim, altering the environment and ambiance, it was the beginning of nightclub as performance art.

Now, the Brooklyn Museum is staging the first exhibition featuring the nightclub as a bellwether of New York City cultural life. More than 650 objects -- spanning fashion, photography, drawings, film, and music -- as well as video, film, and soundtrack, create an immersive experience, with an exhibition design inspired by the club's original lighting and atmosphere. Highlights include never-before-published costume sketches by artist Antonio Lopez and newly discovered set designs, as well as ephemera salvaged by the original club staff and interviews with the cultural luminaries who were there.

Telling the story of this legendary club, as well as serving as a companion to the exhibition, Studio 54: Night Magic serves as a document of the era, depicting the wild energy and provocative creativity of this seminal cultural moment.

The Beatles, John Harris, Peter Jackson, Hanif Kureishi, Ethan A. Russell, Linda McCartney
ID: 14544
Издательство: Callaway Arts & Entertainment

The book opens in January 1969, the beginning of The Beatles’ last year as a band. The Beatles (The White Album) is at number one in the charts and the foursome gather in London for a new project. Over 21 days, first at Twickenham Film Studios and then at their own brand-new Apple Studios, with cameras and tape recorders documenting every day’s work and conversations, the band rehearse a huge number of songs, culminating in their final concert, which famously takes place on the rooftop of their own office building, bringing central London to a halt.

The Beatles: Get Back tells the story of those sessions through transcripts of the band’s candid conversations. Drawing on over 120 hours of sound recordings, leading music writer John Harris edits the richly captivating text to give us a fly-on-the-wall experience of being there in the studios. These sessions come vividly to life through hundreds of unpublished, extraordinary images by two photographers who had special access to their sessions ― Ethan A. Russell and Linda Eastman (who married Paul McCartney two months later). Also included are many unseen high-resolution film-frames, selected from the 55 hours of restored footage from which Peter Jackson’s documentary is also drawn.

Legend has it that these sessions were a grim time for a band falling apart. However, as acclaimed novelist Hanif Kureishi writes in his introduction, “In fact this was a productive time for them, when they created some of their best work. And it is here that we have the privilege of witnessing their early drafts, the mistakes, the drift and digressions, the boredom, the excitement, joyous jamming and sudden breakthroughs that led to the work we now know and admire." Half a century after their final performance, this book completes the story of the creative genius, timeless music, and inspiring legacy of The Beatles.

"It would be fair to say that today Let It Be symbolizes the breaking-up of The Beatles. That’s the mythology, the truth is somewhat different. The real story of Let It Be has been locked in the vaults of Apple Corps for the last 50 years.” ― Peter Jackson

A vibrant photo book celebrating eight years of Fotografiska by interpreting the evolution of the field during the years that Fotografiska has been around to influence it

Including works of photographic masters such as Bryan Adams, Roger Ballen, Guy Bourdin, Nick Brandt, Edward Burtynsky, Anton Corbijn, Elliott Erwitt, Esther Haase, Pieter Hugo, David LaChapelle, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sarah Moon, Jimmy Nelson, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Andres Petersen, Bettina Rheims, Herb Ritts, Paolo Roversi, Sebastião Salgado, Martin Schoeller, Vee Speers, Christian Tagliavini, and Albert Watson.

At the waterfront of Stockholm, in an old industrial building once used by the harbor, lies Fotografiska, one of the world’s leading meeting places dedicated to photography. Ever since its opening in 2010, the best photographers in the world — including David LaChapelle, Sarah Moon, and Martin Schoeller — have all exhibited their work at the venue. Consciously creating a refined mix of emerging talents and icons in approximately 20 exhibitions a year, Fotografiska has also introduced exciting newcomers like Cooper & Gorfer, Ren Hang, and Christian Tagliavini. Presenting masters next to emerging, yet equally remarkable talents, the book spans from the documentary and abstract to landscape, portraiture, fashion, and wildlife, providing a vivid testimony of Fotografiska’s exhibition history while showcasing the great variations within photographic practice.

“The secret of photography is hidden in its communicative power. It can show every aspect of the human condition. It can show a mountain, it can show a bird. It can show the face of a laughing baby. It freezes time.”
                                                      Albert Watson, Photographer

The images are mixed with thought-provoking and inspiring quotes and anecdotes from the photographers as well as behind-the-scenes stories from the Fotografiska founders Jan and Per Broman, who share their fascinating insights and experiences gained by working with their world-renowned program.

"The Eye is a ground-breaking book celebrating the spirit of photography. During the eight years since we opened, we have hosted amazing photographers and exhibitions. In this book, we want to show the best of the best in a way that challenge the perception of the viewer. Just as we aim to do at Fotografiska.”

This official souvenir publication celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II through 70 photographs chosen to illustrate memorable events in the reign of Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

Delightfully informal family photographs of The Queen as a young girl, as a young wife and mother, on holiday and enjoying the company of her children and dogs are joined by more formal images illustrating the official life of the monarch, on grand state occasions, such as the Coronation, the State Opening of Parliament and Trooping the Colour – not to mention her memorable encounter with James Bond and her dramatic arrival at the ceremony marking the opening of the 2010 London Olympics.

Each photograph is accompanied by resonant quotations from speeches given by The Queen over the years, from her wartime Children’s Hour radio broadcast at the age of 13 and her first televised Christmas Day broadcast in 1957 to her speeches welcoming Commonwealth leaders and US Presidents to Buckingham Palace or responding to the warm hospitality extended to her on state visits to India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean.

Love of family, fondness for animals, a keen sense of humour, staunch belief in the Commonwealth as a force for good in the world, and gratitude to all the people around the world who go out of their way to help their communities – these are among the themes that come across from this photographic journey through a remarkable life of duty and service.

Stories and photography intermingle on the pages of this gorgeous homage to ’70s and ’80s cinema and celebrity. Including rare and never-before-seen images, Through Her Lens is a wonderful collection of images and memoires that capture the spirit of the age. From unexpected late-night calls from Romy Schneider, to a stay at Paul Newman’s home in Connecticut; from working on set with Bernardo Bertolucci, Werner Herzog, Steven Spielberg and Sydney Pollack, to lounging poolside with Raquel Welch; Sereny reveals her favourite moments from working behind the lens. This is the first photographic retrospective of Sereny’s star-studded career, including nearly 100 never-before-seen images complemented by Eva’s own stories.

- One of the largest archives of film-set photography and editorial magazine shots from the '70s and '80s
- Introduction by Jacqueline Bisset and Charlotte Rampling
- Archive contains almost 100 unseen pictures, all narrated by Eva Sereny herself: a top professional photographer, working in a male-dominated field
- Includes shots from the sets of several great classical films ('The Great Gatsby', 'The Night Porter', and 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom', and more)

About the Author:

Eva Sereny started to pursue her career in photography in the late '60s and she quickly rose to prominence in her field, despite that photography was very much seen as a 'male' art. She shot the greatest stars of the day - Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, and many more. Her work on film sets developed her passion for cinematic direction; her short film 'The Dress', starring Michael Palin, received the British Academy Award (BAFTA) and the Chicago Golden Plaque. Having her work featured on the covers of major magazines, such as The Sunday Times Magazine, Observer Magazine, Vogue, Elle, Paris Match, Harper's Bazaar, Time and Newsweek, Eva's credentials are as glittering as her photographs. Now retired and dividing her time between London, Rome and Sydney, Eva Sereny, in collaboration with Iconic Images, is proud to present Through Her Lens.

Matt Mahurin
ID: 12915
Издательство: Abrams

A collection of wildly inventive portraits of musician Tom Waits, the result of a 30-year collaboration with photographer and illustrator Matt Mahurin

This visually arresting book is a testament to the unique collaboration, going back three decades, between the photographer and illustrator Matt Mahurin and the musician Tom Waits. Having shot magazine portraits, album covers, and music videos of Waits, Mahurin was inspired to resurrect 100 dormant film negatives as a jumping-off point to explore his own surreal, poetic, and occasionally dark vision.

The images vary from traditional portraits to ones that capture Waits in concert — but the majority are richly imagined scenes in which Waits is more muse than musician.

In addition to the diverse images, the book includes a foreword by Waits, an essay by Mahurin on their longtime collaboration, and 20 original paintings, drawings, photographs, and digital images inspired by Waits’s song titles.
