Volker Hinz
ID: 12224
Издательство: teNeues

Compelling portraits of celebrities and politicians from four of history’s most eventful decades. An overdue and in-depth retrospective of one of the most important German photojournalists

For almost four decades Volker Hinzʼs photographs defined the look of Stern magazine. His subtle yet revealing portraits of German politicians from Willy Brandt onwards are a vivid historical and artistic record of the Federal Republic.

As masterful as any of the major figures he profiled, Hinz excelled at capturing exactly the right moment. His reportage from the U.S. and across the globe gave us memorable images of greats such as Muhammad Ali, Woody Allen, Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer. Hinz’s works are classics that linger indelibly in our collective consciousness. Unlike most celebrity photography, his images have both the crisp candor of a snapshot and the reflective depth of fine art.

Terry O'Neill
ID: 15486
Издательство: ACC Art Books

When Ziggy played The Marquee Club in Soho, London, in October 1973, most of those invited to the small venue did not realise that this would be the last performance David Bowie would ever give as Ziggy Stardust. Terry O’Neill, celebrated photographer, was given unprecedented access to document the event.

O’Neill captured Bowie and his crew backstage as they went through costume changes, and Bowie transformed into the character he’d soon put to rest. On stage, dodging television cameras and lights, O’Neill snapped the incredible stage presence for which Bowie and his crew had become renowned. O’Neill remembers of Bowie: “He became a character on stage. As much as a person takes a role in a play for the West End or on Broadway, learning the lines, putting on the costumes – this was, I think, the way Bowie treated his stage. This night at the Marquee, I witnessed a modern-day Hamlet – and it was Ziggy Stardust”.

Award-winning music writer Daniel Rachel interviews key contributors of the day, including O Neill, Ava Cherry, Amanda Lear and Geoff MacCormack along with new insights and memories from fans who were in the audience who played witness to this incredible moment.

- Rare and unseen images from Terry O'Neill's unprecedented access to David Bowie's last performance as Ziggy Stardust, including candid backstage shots
- New and original interviews from a host of people who witnessed the last performance, including Geoff MacCormack - one of Bowie's long-time friends and "Spider"; Suzy Ronson - Mick's wife and stylist; Ken Scott - sound engineer and producer; Ava Cherry - backing vocals, and many more

About the Author:

Terry O'Neill has had a star-studded career. He has been in the business of capturing the most iconic, candid, and unguarded moments of the famous and infamous for six decades. His reportage photography chronicled the evolution of fashion in the post-war era, and later the emergence of bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Animals, and icons like David Bowie and Elton John. He has been photographer-of-choice for a multitude of celebrities, ftom Sinatra and Audrey Hepburn to Raquel Welch and Paul Newman, and remains the only photographer to have captured shots not only of every James Bond to date, but also more than 25 Bond girls and a staggering 150 Oscar-nominated actors and actresses. O'Neill was awarded withthe Royal Society of Arts' highest honour, the Centenary Medal, in 2012.

Carlos Acosta, Petra Giloy-Hirt
ID: 17967
Издательство: Prestel

Taking readers behind the scenes of one of the world’s most exciting dance companies, this richly illustrated book also tells the incredible back story of its famed creator and his brilliant vision to weave Cuban culture and history into classical and contemporary dance.

As a troubled teenager, Carlos Acosta was whisked off the streets of his native Havana and enrolled in the Cuban national ballet. From that time on he has emerged as one of the most influential dancers of the twenty-first century. Throughout his career, Acosta has striven to shine an international light on his homeland’s rich cultural traditions, while also exposing Cuba to choreographic innovations happening around the globe. With this aim, Acosta established Acosta Danza in 2015.

More than five years later the troupe continues to perform to rapturous accolades, both for the exceptional quality of its Cuban dancers and for its mission to highlight Cuban-influenced music and set design. Filled with more than one hundred photographs, many never-beforepublished, this book gives voice to the astonishingly diverse collection of dancers and choreographers, whose sensuous vitality and technical skill jump off the page — their experiences on and off the stage, their dreams and strategies, their emotions and challenges. In a deeply personal interview, Acosta himself shares a vision for giving young Cuban dancers the opportunities to express themselves creatively, and to give back to a country and community that gave so much to him.

About the Author:

Carlos Acosta has worked with numerous prestigious companies as ballet dancer and choreographer. He was soloist of the Royal Ballet until 2015 when he retired from stage and founded his own dance company, Acosta Danza, in Cuba. Since 2020, Carlos Acosta is also the director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Petra Giloy-Hirtz, former associate professor in medieval German literature, is a curator and author based in Munich; recent exhibitions and publications include Julian Schnabel: Polaroids, Dennis Hopper: The Lost Album and David Lynch: The Factory Photographs.

Cristina Mittermeier
ID: 11979
Издательство: teNeues

From ocean shores to some of the most remote indigenous communities in the world, photographer Cristina Mittermeier explores humanity’s relationship with the planet and possibilities for a mindful, sustainable future.

Cristina Mittermeier knows a thing or two about water. Trained as a marine biologist and a photographer, the Mexico City-born Mittermeier combines her work behind the lens with her passion for environmentalism, taking pictures around the world to explore our relationship to the earth and ocean and to draw attention to the beauty and the plight of our planet. In Amaze, Mittermeier elicits our wonder and awe at the natural world and the labyrinth or “maze” of navigating a sustainable existence. The book combines two series: “Enoughness” and “The Water’s Edge.” The first draws out Mittermeier’s philosophy for a mindful and sustainable way of being in the world. Bringing together photographs from some of the most isolated corners of the earth, the book shows wild animals, remote landscapes, and indigenous peoples — challenging the cult of material wealth and proposing alternatives for a meaningful and sustainable connection to our environment, each other, and ourselves. In “The Water’s Edge,” Mittermeier presents photographs from around the globe that capture the frontier between land and ocean and the special meaning it has for human life. Whether it is fishermen bringing in their daily haul, women washing laundry in the shallows, or surfers frolicking in the spray, the water’s edge is revealed as an integral and universal space in which ephemeral moments reveal not only our common dependency on the planet, but also our common humanity. As much an inspiration for sustainable living as a staggering collection of nature photography, Amaze is a must-have book for all those who care about our planet and those we share it with.

About the author:

Photographer and marine biologist, CRISTINA GOETTSCH MITTERMEIER, was born in Mexico City in 1966. A passionate environmentalist, she founded the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) in 2005 and the non-profit organization SeaLegacy in 2015. Her work has been published in National Geographic and TIME and she has received both the Mission Award from the North American Nature Photography Association and the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year Award.

Every other breath we take comes from the ocean. What we do or fail to do in the next five years will determine what our oceans and planet look like for the next ten thousand years. That is why I co-founded SeaLegacy, an organization that, with your support, can change how the story ends. — Cristina Mittermeier

 - A pioneering book of nature photography from environmental campaigner and photographer, Cristina Mittermeier
 - Captures some of the most endangered animals, remote communities, and extreme corners on earth

Bob Colacello, John Waters
ID: 8698
Издательство: Rizzoli

Andy Warhol’s iconic portraits of Elizabeth Taylor are images that have lost none of their explosive power in the decades that separate the present from the moment of their making. Frequently hailed as the greatest movie star of all time, Elizabeth Taylor was a friend of Andy Warhol in the 1970s and 1980s. The personification of charisma, whose highly public life was charged with drama, tragedy, and romance, this iconic muse was a perfect vehicle for Warhol’s vivid silk-screen portraiture derived from press clippings, publicity shots, and film stills. Warhol made over fifty portraits of Taylor in all her incarnations—from the ethereally beautiful child actress in National Velvet to the commanding, voluptuous screen goddess of Cleopatra. Andy Warhol: Liz sheds light on the relationship between Warhol and one of his most notorious muses.

About the Authors:

Bob Colacello began writing for Andy Warhol’s Interview in 1970. He was named editor shortly thereafter and remained at the magazine until 1982. His memoir of working with Warhol, Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up, was published in 1990. He has been a regular contributor to Vanity Fair for the last two decades. John Waters is a filmmaker, writer, and visual artist. He has directed such cult films as Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and Female Trouble.

Ara Gallant was born Ira Gallantz in 1932 in the Bronx, but later changed his name because he felt Ara Gallant sounded more exotic. And the life he led was, indeed, an exotic one. Gallant started his career in fashion as a hair-dresser, working at Bergdorf Goodman as one of the city's top colorists. In the mid-1960s he was approached by Vogue and began working exclusively as a hairstylist on photo assignments. In fact, he was the first hairstylist to be paid for such work. Gallant worked with many of the great fashion photographers of the period, including Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Bert Stern, among them. His most notable contribution was the introduction "flying hair" a visual gimmick he first used on an Avedon shot with Twiggy in 1966. The effect is still widely copied today. By the early 1970s, Gallant began shooting pictures himself. His first assignment was celebrity portraits for Interview magazine. His work often juxtaposed classic Horst-like compositions with contemporary scenarios. In the early 1980s, Gallant moved to L.A. to lead with his friend Jack Nicholson and to pursue a directing career. It never happened, in 1990 he committed suicide in a hotel room in Las Vegas.

As well as Anjelica Huston's introductions, this book features contributions from Polly Mellen, Veruschka, Penelope Tree, Diane Von Furstenberg, Lauren Hutton, Viva, Bert Stern, Apollonia Van Ravenstein, Paul Van Ravenstein, Pat Cleveland, Ingrid Boulting, Shelley Smith, Steven Meisel, Susan Forristal, Bob Colacello, Brigid Berlin, Barbara Lantz, David Croland, Paul Morrissey, Martin Price, Jo Anne Davidian, Drew Barrymore, Russell Todd, Virginia Hey. Australian born David Wills is an independent curator, photographic preservationist and editor who has accrued one of the world's largest independent archives of original photographs, negatives and transparencies. He has contributed material to many publications and museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, and in 2002 edited "Bernard of Hollywood's Ultimate Pin-Up Book" (Taschen). Most recently, Wills has produced a series of photography exhibitions based primarily on images from his archive. His shows include "Edie Sedgwick: Unseen Photographs of a Warhol Superstar", "Murder, Models, Madness: Photographs from the Motion Picture Blow-Up", "Blonde Bombshell", "James Bond" and "Warhology", and have received major profiles in The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, American Photo and Vogue. In 2008 Wills co-authored "Veruschka" (Assouline).

Author Umberto Nicola Nicoletti, Introduction by Filippo Grandi
ID: 15657
Издательство: Rizzoli

This fine-art book discusses the phenomenon of LGBTIQ+ refugees, asylum seekers, and those subject to discrimination in their home countries based on their gender or sexual orientation.

More the 40 percent of the countries in the world today still impose prison sentences or the death penalty just for being LGBTIQ+. Asylum is an international project that arose from a collaboration between five associations around the world and photographer Umberto Nicola Nicoletti.

Through the use of beautiful “glossy images,” such as those used in fashion and advertising, the project seeks to engender empathy for the subjects involved and their stories. Asylum seekers become celebrities, idols, and heroes as they are. Therefore, it is not photographic reportage but, rather, an art project focused on restoring their dignity.

LGBTIQ+ refugees often face double discrimination: in their home country and in their destination, as they are both immigrants and LGBTIQ+. This is especially true in refugee camps, where they are subject to assaults by other migrants. The aim of this project is to give these individuals the identity they are often deprived of when they are reduced to an indistinct mass — and to show the world their true beauty.

About the Author:

Umberto Nicola Nicoletti is an Italian photographer and director. He specializes in portrait photography in the fields of advertising, music, fashion, and publishing. He has created international ad campaigns, commercials, book covers and music videos. Filippo Grandi is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Against the Grain

Since its beginnings in Paris in the mid-19th century, the idea of bohemia, an urban community of artists and intellectuals living outside bourgeois norms, has been a potent trope of artistic identity. It was here that the notion of an unconventional, free-spirited life, precarious yet filled with idealism, was codified and romanticized. Bohemia: History of an Idea, 1950 – 2000 shows the continuities and differences between the scenes and subcultures of the second half of the twentieth century, when the mainstream began to appropriate and thereby erode a way of life predicated on its rejection. Nonetheless, as an alternative to conformity the bohemian idea has exerted an enduring fascination. Through works by 39 artists, including Alice Neel, PeterHujar, John Deakin, David Wojnarowicz, Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, William Gedney, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan and Wolfgang Tillmans, the publication explores the diversity of expressions in various cities in Europe, North America and Asia and shows that the bohemian idea continues to galvanize and inspire.

Russell Ferguson is a research professor at the University of California’s Art Department. During his tenure at the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, he curated numerous exhibitions on culture and representation in contemporary art and photography.
