An extensively illustrated compendium of 45 expertly selected illuminated bibles that transport the reader through 1,000 years of history and across the Christian world

For two millennia the Bible has inspired the creation of art. Within this legacy of remarkable art and beauty, illuminated biblical manuscripts offer some of the best evidence for our understanding of early Christian painting and artistic interpretations of the Bible.

Compiled and written by two internationally renowned experts, this beautiful book immerses the reader in the world of illuminated manuscripts of the Bible. Through its pictures we are transported across 1,000 years of history, passing chronologically through many of the major centres of the Christian world. Starting in Constantinople in the East, the journey moves on to Lindisfarne in the North, to imperial Aachen, back to Canterbury, then to Carolingian Tours in western France. Later we view some of the riches of Winchester, Mozarabic Spain, Crusader Jerusalem, the Meuse valley, northern Iraq, Paris, London, Bologna, Naples, Bulgaria, the Low Countries, Rome and Persia. Our journey ends in Gondar, the capital of imperial Ethiopia. Forty-five remarkable books – each a treasure in its own right – provide our itinerary through time and across continents. Together they enable us to explore and revel in the extraordinary art and beauty of illuminated biblical manuscripts, some of the finest but least-known paintings from the Middle Ages.

An essential guide to the artists of tomorrow by one of the movers and shakers of the art world

With the birth of contemporary museum culture and the advent of digital technologies, the 21st century has brought a whole new means by which to access art and its histories. How do we engage with contemporary art in an ever-developing global context, without getting lost in a frenzied cult of novelty?

Omar Kholeif takes us on a journey of discovery that will influence generations of artists and art lovers to come.

The Barnes Foundation, established by scientist, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Albert C. Barnes in 1922, is home to a legendary art collection. Barnes assembled one of the world’s largest and finest groups of post-impressionist and early modern paintings, with holdings by such luminaries as Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Rousseau, Modigliani, Soutine, Manet, Monet, Seurat, Degas, Van Gogh, and Gauguin.

The Foundation’s collection also holds significant examples of American art, including works by Demuth, Glackens, and the Prendergasts; African sculpture; Native American ceramics, jewelry, and textiles; Asian paintings, prints, and sculptures; medieval manuscripts and sculptures; Old Master paintings by El Greco, Rubens, Titian, and others; ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art; and American and European decorative arts and metalwork.

The presentation of the collection reflects Barnes’s educational and aesthetic approach: symmetrical “ensembles,” or wall compositions, combine works of different periods, mediums, cultures, and styles for the purpose of comparison and study.

Texts by Judith F. Dolkart and Martha Lucy explore the Barnes Foundation’s collection, educational mission, ensembles, and individual works. Large color plates, little-seen archival photographs, and numerous gatefolds illustrate 150 of the greatest hits of the collection and twenty gallery ensembles.

About the Authors:

Judith F. Dolkart is chief curator of the Barnes Foundation. She is the author of James Tissot: The Life of Christ (2009). Martha Lucy is associate curator of the Barnes Foundation.

This highly sought-after volume detailing one of the most influential magazines of the twentieth century is now back in print at a newly affordable price. In 1950, Fleur Cowles established what would become one of the most important and talked about magazines ever created. Critically lauded for its sharp mix of clothes, literature, art, travel, decor, theater, and humor, Flair made publishing history with its combination of eclectic editorial content and lavish production quality. Recalled as "the first magazine that became an art form," The Best of Flair is a compilation of the magazine’s best content as chosen by the woman who created it. Along with its distinctive production values, Flair also features interviews and contributions from some of the most noted artists and celebrities of the past fifty years, including Lucian Freud, Jean Cocteau, Tallulah Bankhead, Saul Steinberg, Salvador Dalí, Simone de Beauvoir, Walker Evans, James Michener, Ogden Nash, Gypsy Rose Lee, Clare Boothe Luce, George Bernard Shaw, John O’Hara, Margaret Mead, and Tennessee Williams. A new book by the Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College Library that represents the glories of The Book of Kells for today’s readers, revealing the astounding detail and richness of one of the greatest treasures of medieval Europe.

One of the most remarkable manuscripts to survive from the early Middle Ages in Europe, The Book of Kells was probably painted around 800 in a monastery at Iona in Scotland or Kells in Ireland, or perhaps in both places.

Extraordinarily inventive and intricate imagery accompanies the texts of the four Gospels: full-page depictions of Evangelists and their symbols, lavish honorific openings to the Gospels, extraordinary initials, and decoration that combines complex interlace, animals, and human figures.

This newly photographed book explores The Book of Kells through its historical background; a display of the elements of the book at their actual size; the spectacular openings of the texts that precede the Gospels; a study of earlier and comparable manuscripts; detailed examination of symbols and themes, with special enlarged details; a look at the scribes and artists who worked on the manuscript; and a consideration of technical aspects, illuminated by recent scientific research.

The rich illustrations feature more than fifty full-size reproductions of complete pages of the manuscript plus enlarged details that allow one to relish the intricacy of elements barely visible to the naked eye. Supplementary images place the manuscript in its setting and provide comparisons for its iconography and style.

The third volume in this luxurious series, this work is a celebration of the most precious objects of the Cartier Collection.

The Cartier Collection, housed in Geneva, Switzerland, gathers together over 1,360 pieces that reveal the stylistic and technical developments in the creations of this world-renowned house. Following the previous works in this series devoted to Cartier’s jewelry and timepieces, this third volume explores the precious objects and accessories that complete the collection: from opulent gold and black enamel vanity cases set with platinum and rose-cut diamond fleurons to exquisite and stylish cigarette holders, belt buckles, hat pins, and evening bags. The jeweler has always placed great emphasis on male elegance and an array of men’s accessories is also showcased, including polished gold razors, sophisticated leather travel bags, and diamond-encrusted platinum and onyx cuff links.

From the extravagant yet sublime Tutti Frutti evening bag, made of a weave of seed pearls and dripping with gold, diamond, ruby, emerald, and sapphire details, to exotic and intricate Chinese powder compacts, these creations are works of fine art. This handsome volume recounts the history of the House of Cartier and its sublimation of often everyday items, which became veritable precious objects. The text is illustrated with more than 550 pieces taken from the collection ― beautifully reproduced in full size and in color ― which can usually only be admired in retrospective exhibitions held in internationally-renowned museums. Other archival material includes photographs of high society clients, detailed sketches and studies for various pieces, and vintage advertising posters.

Presented in a luxurious silk slipcase with ribbon closure, this tome is a tribute to some of the most exquisite objects in the Cartier Collection.
