Photographs by Fokion Zissiadis, Text by Alex Sheal
ID: 16272
Издательство: Rizzoli

This stunning photographic volume is the permanent record of a long discovery trip into Vietnam's lost outposts.

Over two trips in the north, in spring and autumn 2016, Fokion Zissiadis covered some 6,000 kilometers of road, track and trail, and rocky mountains, close to Vietnam's far northern frontier. These epic extremes of the Vietnamese landscapes have resisted generations of invaders across the centuries and are home to an incredible humanity.

The photographs in this collection show us a Vietnam known only to those following less-traveled paths. Faced with the landscapes, we experience human life at the threshold of nature; faced with the people, we feel as close as we might get without meeting them. But even then, it takes a special eye to give us the view as if we're standing right there and to rediscover the beauty and the value right around us.

A man who has achieved a lot in life, Fokion Zissiadis is an architect, builder, and entrepreneur who has built one of the most amazing resorts in Europe. At this stage of his life, the Greek photographer has started to travel all over the world--Africa, Iceland, India--looking for the unseen side of the most remote landscapes and people of the planet.

This stunning volume comes in a protective box.

About the Authors:

Fokion Zissiadis first took an interest in photography during his years as an architecture student and gradually developed more personal, interpretative views of the landscapes he sought to capture. Alex Sheal's stories have featured in the New York TimesHuffington Post, and many other publications, and he has been the recipient of the David Higham Award and the New Writer Novella Prize.

Viktor Wynd
ID: 15741
Издательство: Prestel

Let the inimitable aesthete Viktor Wynd guide you through a subversive celebration of curiosities, art, mess, decay, and self-indulgence, passionately arguing that the world is full of wonder that is in danger of being sanitised and that collectors are the ultimate artists.

The Viktor Wynd Museum in East London is arranged with the sensibility of a 17th-century Wunderkabinett. It displays and sells an eccentric and seemingly random collection of objects — everything from shrunken heads to narwhal tusks — united only by the sense of wonder they inspire in their curator. Now, Wynd takes readers on a tour of homes, private collections and museums that share his fondness for things arcane, desiccated, antique, or just plain odd. The book visits rarified locations lovingly curated by bohemians and artists: from a rambling Devon farmhouse and its historic taxidermy to an Italianate villa in East London to the House of Dreams Museum. It also includes advice on how to start a collection of your own, covering details on auction houses, private dealers, flea markets and fairs, and shows that having distinctive taste does not necessarily require a massive budget.

About the Author:

Viktor Wynd is the proprietor of "The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & UnNatural History" in Hackney, east London and is chancellor of pataphysical organization "The Last Tuesday Society". He is the author of The Unnatural History Museum (Prestel).

Photographs by Massimo Listri, Text by Raniero Gnoli and Carlo Gasparri and Alvar González-Palacios
ID: 15516
Издательство: Rizzoli

A journey through its emotional itineraries is unveiled for the very first time by the photographic masterpieces of Massimo Listri.

Villa Albani Torlonia, with its collections, the Italian garden, and the hemicycle of the Kaffeehaus, is a sublime testimony of that particular antiquarian taste which came to the fore in the mid-eighteenth century, that for which Rome became a favorite destination on the Grand Tour. The classicist dream of Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692–1779), was preserved thanks to the Torlonia family, who purchased the villa in 1866, enlarging the collection and the gardens and restoring the most important cardinal residence of the eighteenth century.

More than 300 images by the great Italian master Massimo Listri recount the history of this extraordinary cultural heritage for the very first time. An immersive journey leads the reader between its collections of ancient masterpieces. Statues, bas-reliefs, and fountains are ensconced between the various buildings and gardens of the villa in a composition of environments, landscapes, and works of art forever waiting to be discovered.

About the Authors:

Massimo Listri is a photographer who has published more than 70 books and has exhibited his work at numerous solo exhibitions throughout the world. Carlo Gasparri is emeritus professor at the University of Naples Federico II and has authored several books about archaeology and Greek and Roman art. Raniero Gnoli is an Orientalist and historian of religions. Alvar González-Palacios is an author and art historian and former collaborator of FMR magazine.

He was also prolific writer, penning hundreds of letters to his brother, Theo, that form an unusually rich record of his life and work, from his early development as an artist to his struggles with mental illness that sadly cut short a promising career. This book draws on Van Gogh's letters to provide a powerful and poignant account of his life and work.

Lively, accessible, and lavishly illustrated, this new book offers a concise introduction to this great master of art.

Tamara Weiss, Amanda Benchley
ID: 18438
Издательство: Abrams

Tamara Weiss and Amanda Benchley’s Vineyard Folk is an intimate journey into the lives and inspirational places of some of the many talented artists who have always helped make up the larger community of Martha’s Vineyard.

The island, located just seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, has a long history as geographic muse. Lillian Hellman and William Styron wrote overlooking the Vineyard Haven harbor, and Thomas Hart Benton — whose influence is still felt in island painters today—depicted the stone walls and winding roads of what is known as “up-island” more than a hundred years ago. Now, a new generation continues to build on these creative legacies, inspired by the island’s diaphanous light, endless beaches, historic towns, and rolling fields and vistas.

Vineyard Folk features painters, potters, poets, musicians, writers, and actors and the unique ways they work, live, and play here. From Tiffany Vanderhoop’s hand-beaded earrings based on original Wampanoag designs, to Julie Taymor’s screenplay inspired by the animals in her backyard, to Micah Thanhauser’s pottery made from the island’s natural clay, and Allen Whiting’s pastoral scenes of his farm, each page is filled with island treasures. The book also reveals the legacies of the island’s origin as Noepe — as the Wampanoag Indians originally named the land — the whaling industry, and the historic Black community of Oak Bluffs.

Above all, Vineyard Folk is a love letter to a remarkable island community, an homage to those who came before, and a testament to the current challenges of living on a resort island where the weather can be fierce and the housing scarce. With personal interviews and stunning color photography, it is a collage of creativity, resilience, and hope. Come celebrate the artistic island folk of the Vineyard, captured at a golden moment of time that might not last forever.

Walking surveys the proliferation of pedestrian practices across contemporary art, taking an avowedly political stance on where and how the three practices of art, walking and writing intersect.

Across the world, walking remains a vital way to assert one’s presence in public space and discourse. Foregrounding work by Black artists, Indigenous artists and artists of colour, working-class artists, LGBTQI+ artists, disabled artists and neurodiverse artists, as well as many others, Walking maps the terrain of contemporary walking practices while examining the diverse voices and bodies of those who incorporate walking into their art. This anthology contends that, as a relational practice, walking inevitably touches upon questions of access, public space, land ownership and use; it is therefore always a political act. Walking offers a vital opportunity to draw attention to the work of those who are frequently denied the right to take their places in public space, not only in the street or the countryside but also in art discourse.

Text by Walter Scott Murch, Robert Storr, Winslow Myers, Judy Collischan, Foreword by George Lucas
ID: 16250
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first complete monograph of artist Walter Tandy Murch explores the life of an unsung yet remarkable artist whose paintings and illustrations of everyday objects and mechanical devices are familiar yet mysterious, or as George Lucas puts it, “in a magical middle.”

Walter Tandy Murch (1907–1967) is best known for his enigmatic, dreamlike still-life paintings of everyday objects and mechanical devices in a style that falls between Magic Realist, Surrealist, and Realist. This volume offers the most comprehensive collection of his work, including his striking commercial work for magazines and his paintings from the extensive collection of George Lucas.

Lucas calls himself a “fanboy” of Murch’s art — paintings and drawings he describes as simultaneously “functional and dreamy, simple and complicated; they are quiet yet grab your attention.” The tension of these opposing reactions draws viewers into Murch’s still lifes, which caught the attention of famed art dealer Betty Parsons, who also represented artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly, and Agnes Martin. Murch showed his work at Parsons’s gallery for nearly thirty years.

With illuminating essays and extensive plates sections displaying Murch’s works, this celebration of an exceptionally talented and visionary artist is long overdue.

About the Author:

George Lucas is a film director, producer, screenwriter, and art collector. Walter Scott Murch is a writer and an Oscar-winning film editor and sound engineer. Robert Storr is a curator, critic, author, professor, and dean of the School of Art at Yale. Winslow Myers has taught art and art history for forty years, chairing the art department at the Bancroft School in Massachusetts. Judy Collischan is a curator, lecturer, writer, and professor of contemporary art.

Between Afrofuturism, fantasy and postcolonialism: the most comprehensive monograph to date on the fantastical worlds of Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu takes viewers on journeys of material, psychological and sociopolitical transformation; this volume explores her most recent groundbreaking work. Over the past two decades, Mutu has created chimerical constellations of powerful female characters, hybrid beings and fantastical landscapes. With a rare understanding of the need for powerful new mythologies beyond simple binaries and stereotypes, Mutu breaches common distinctions between human, animal, plant and machine. An artist who calls both Nairobi and New York City home, Mutu moves voraciously between cultural traditions to challenge colonialist, racist and sexist worldviews with her visionary projection of an alternate universe informed by Afrofuturism, posthumanism and feminism.

This dazzling book accompanies a presentation of Mutu’s new work on view at the Legion, along with a greater selection from her landmark oeuvre. It is the most comprehensive book on the artist to date.
