Figurative painting of the past five years, represented here by an exciting young generation of artists and vital practitioners, addresses the challenge of contemporary representation through expressionistic compositions and new techniques reflecting digital fluency.

Figuration is one of the oldest art forms, but it continually evolves, along with our changing understanding of human identity. The artists featured here often source imagery from the Internet, and draw on aesthetics developed in Internet-first channels. Digital techniques and affordances are incorporated into rendering processes with traditional media: brushstrokes are more precise, lines are sharper, and color is more highly keyed. In these works, expressionism is located more in the composition than in the paint handling.

This richly illustrated collection of figurative works is accompanied by texts that connect the present moment in painting to the early 1980s, when the emergence of artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, David Salle, and Julian Schnabel revitalized the art dialogue after the extended dissolution of Minimalism, and to its roots in the practice of painters like Picabia.

About the Authors:

Alba Cappellieri is Full Professor of Jewelry and Fashion Accessories Design at Politecnico di Milano, where she is Director of the International Master’s in Jewellery and Fashion Accessories and the Master’s in Fashion Design, and teaches Brand and Product Management at Milano Fashion Institute (under the consortium with Politecnico di Milano, Bocconi University and Università Cattolica).

From 2013 to 2016 she taught Design for Innovation at Stanford University. Alba Cappellieri is a member of the Scientific Council at the Van Cleef & Arpels School of Jewelry Arts in Paris and an advisor with the Creative Academy of the Cologni Foundation in Milan. She was appointed Ambassador of Italian Design for Italian Design Day in Osaka in 2017, in Sydney in 2018 and in Baku in 2019. Since 2014, she has been Director of the Museo del Gioiello jewelry museum in Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, Italy’s first museum exclusively dedicated to jewelry.

The official book that accompanies the blockbuster exhibition in Ghent

Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck (c. 1390–1441) towered above his contemporaries. With his unprecedented technique, scientific knowledge and unparalleled powers of observation, Van Eyck lifted oil painting to previously unseen heights and helped determine the course of Western art. In Spring 2020 the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, Belgium hosted the largest ever exhibition of Van Eyck’s work. An Optical Revolution included artworks by Van Eyck, several pieces from his studio and international masterpieces from the late Middle Ages, which made the world of Van Eyck more tangible than ever. Central to the exhibition were the eight restored exterior panels of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, a highly exceptional loan from St Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent. After the exhibition the panels were returned to their original place in the cathedral and will never again be shown elsewhere.

This tie-in exhibition catalogue unravels some of the myths that surround Van Eyck and his technique while showing his complete oeuvre and his influence in a new perspective. With essays by leading experts from around the world, this book is an indispensable resource for Van Eyck fans and scholars alike.

The history of the VanhaerentsArtCollection began in the 1970s, when a young Walter Vanhaerents laid the foundation of his now famous collection with works by Andy Warhol. Much has happened since then, but the focus on new and provocative art, often considered radical at the time, remained. Vasily Kandinsky became the pioneer of abstract art; he was a co-founder of the Blauer Reiter, an art theorist and an influential teacher at the Bauhaus. When he abandoned his promising career as a lawyer in favour of art at the age of 30, no one could have guessed that a few years later he would play a decisive role in determining and revolutionising twentieth-century art.

What the art critic Will Grohmann wrote in 1924 about Kandinsky in the historic series Junge Kunst, reflects current opinion at the time about the path Kandinsky had chosen towards abstraction, which was regarded as both irritating and bold. However, it was not just his radical views about art that polarised people; the charismatic painter also provoked them with his personality, prompting admiration and repudiation in equal measure. This volume is designed to appeal to book-lovers and is lavishly illustrated. It illuminates the principal milestones in Kandinsky’s artistic and private life, providing an insight into his legacy and focusing in particular on his years at the Bauhaus, where he taught together with artist colleagues like Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger.

This is the first comprehensive book on Venetian mosaics of the nineteenth century. It illustrates work by both the Salviati Company and the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company. A carefully researched work, Venetian Glass addresses the revival of the art of Venetian mosaic making in the mid-nineteenth century and discusses the complicity of both Antonio Salviati and Sir Austen Henry Layard in that revival. It is a comprehensive work, illustrating Salviati's earliest surviving mosaics, the 1860 mosaic decoration of the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore and continuing through his company's last commission, the Stanford Memorial Church in Palo Alto, California.

The recovered art of Venetian mosaic in the late-nineteenth- and early twentieth-century is now seen as one of the most important aesthetic achievements of the Victorian-Edwardian era. Neglected and unappreciated for decades, surviving mosaics are being cleaned and restored worldwide. Whether highly visible monuments in major cities or small achievements of Venetian manufacturers are now treasured for the splendid masterpieces they are.

She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2005 and was named the most powerful woman in fashion by Forbes magazine in 2012 She is International Ambassador for Venetian Heritage Foundation. Peter Marino, FAIA, is the principal of Peter Marino Architect PLLC, the New York–based architecture firm he founded in 1978. Known for his residential and retail work for the most iconic names in fashion and art, his award-winning work includes large-scale commercial, cultural, and hospitality projects. He is Chairman of Venetian Heritage Foundation and on the board of directors for International Committee of L’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs.

He is adjunct professor at the University of Western Australia.

Federica Sala is an independent curator. She edited the book Minimal/Baroque on the Italian artist Gianluca Pacchioni and has authored various publications on the history of Italian design.
