Sharp angles, strange forms, lurid colours, and distorted perspectives are classic hallmarks of Expressionism, the twentieth-century movement that prioritized emotion over objective reality.

The Swiss artist Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) was born in Lausanne, but spent much of his working life in France.
