Rolling Stone was founded by publisher Jann S. Wenner and music critic Ralph J. Gleason in 1967. It has a circulation of more than one million readers and widespread international circulation.

This major retrospective catalogue accompanies the first institutional exhibition focusing on the visual works of art by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke. The majority of the paintings, drawings and digital works were specifically made for Yorke’s internationally celebrated band Radiohead, formed in Oxford in 1985. The book is beautifully designed in the same size as a record cover and features iconic artworks from the 1980s until today, relating to Radiohead albums, their covers and promotional band images, as well as sketchbooks and rare materials from their archives that have never before been published. It offers fresh views on the art of album covers, exploring the complex relationship between visual art and music.

Radiohead was formed in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in 1985. The collaboration with the artist Stanley Donwood began in 1994 when the band was developing their second album, The Bends, which was released on 13th March, 1995. 2025 is therefore the 40-year anniversary of the band and the 30-year anniversary of the release of The Bends. The catalogue’s focus is upon the art produced by both Stanley Donwood and the band’s lead vocalist, Thom Yorke presented chronologically. Radiohead’s popularity has never waned and they have a strong core following and new fans (many of who are the children of ‘original’ fans).

The high-quality reproductions are complemented by exclusive interviews with the artists, and essays by Alex Farquharson, Nico Kos Earle, Benjamin Myers, James Putnam and Jennifer Ramkalawon.

A major retrospective is held at the Ashmolean Museum from August 2025 to January 2026.

Lena Fritsch is the Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art at the Ashmolean, responsible for exhibitions, displays and acquisitions of international art. She teaches at the University of Oxford, V&A and SOAS. Previously, she was a curator at Tate Modern, London and Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. Recent publications include Anselm Kiefer: Early Works (2025), Ashmolean NOW: Pio Abad (2024), Ashmolean NOW: Flora Yukhnovich x Daniel Crews-Chubb (2023), Tokyo: Art & Photography (with Clare Pollard, 2021). She holds a PhD from Bonn University and also studied at Keio University, Tokyo. Benjamin Myers is an award-winning author and journalist, whose work includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and journalism. His novels have been translated into13 languages. He is the author of Rare Singles, Cuddy, The Gallows Pole, The Offing and many more.

A collection of wildly inventive portraits of musician Tom Waits, the result of a 30-year collaboration with photographer and illustrator Matt Mahurin

This visually arresting book is a testament to the unique collaboration, going back three decades, between the photographer and illustrator Matt Mahurin and the musician Tom Waits. Having shot magazine portraits, album covers, and music videos of Waits, Mahurin was inspired to resurrect 100 dormant film negatives as a jumping-off point to explore his own surreal, poetic, and occasion­ally dark vision.

The images vary from traditional por­traits to ones that capture Waits in concert — but the majority are richly imagined scenes in which Waits is more muse than musician.

In addition to the diverse images, the book includes a foreword by Waits, an essay by Mahurin on their longtime collaboration, and 20 original paintings, drawings, photographs, and digital images inspired by Waits’s song titles.

Music from the punk era transformed the world of music. If you could play three chords, you could make records. You didn’t even need a record label. You could start your own.

The same thing happened in graphic design. All you needed were a few sheets of Letraset and access to a photocopier, and you could make your own record covers. And lots of people did just that.

Action Time Vision: Punk & Post-Punk 7" Record Sleeves is a celebration of DIY graphics from the punk and post-punk eras. You might call it outsider graphic design.

With a few exceptions, trained designers rarely did 7” singles covers for this notoriously shouty and aggressive music. Apart from a few covers done by Barney Bubbles and Peter Saville, most punk and post-punk covers were designed by band members, label owners or friends.

Annie Lennox, OBE, is a Scottish singer-songwriter, Global Feminist, and activist. She and fellow musician David A. Stewart achieved major international success in the 1980s as Eurythmics. Lennox is the most recognized female artist at the Brit Awards winning a total of eight awards. She also has won four Grammy Awards, four Ivor Novellos (honored with a Fellowship to BASCA in 2015), 3 MTV Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and numerous other awards and honors. In 2022, Lennox was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Eurythmics was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. David Gahr (1922–2008) was tapped by Columbia Records designer John Berg to shoot cover art for Bruce Springsteen’s second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. Gahr’s earliest photographs of the musician showcase a youthful Springsteen, not even aged twenty-three, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on the eve of a career breakthrough. Gahr befriended the rising star, and over a span of approximately ten years he photographed Springsteen, both on- and offstage. Rare captures include Springsteen recording music, performing at the cramped venue Bottom Line weeks before the release of his seminal 1975 album Born to Run, and playing to legions of fans during his Born in the USA tour. Bruce Springsteen 1973–1986 is an unprecedented look back at Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their path to becoming rock legends.

David Gahr was one of music’s renowned but under-the-radar photographers. Starting in 1958when Moses Asch of Folkways Records brought his work to a larger audience, Gahr captured iconic images of some of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century, including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Miles Davis, to name only a few. Chris Murray is a writer and founder of Govinda Gallery, which represents some of the best rock music–related fine art photography and photographers in the world.

About the Author

Geoff MacCormack, David Bowie’s lifelong friend, joined Bowie’s 1973 world tour as an additional back-up vocalist and percussionist, and later as a ‘Diamond Dog’ in '74 and what would be known as ‘The Young Americans Soul Tour’. He also worked on the six albums from Aladdin Sane to Station to Station. After three years of touring, recording and travelling with Bowie, MacCormack started an award winning (Gold Clio, Ivor Novello) music production partnership with Simon Goldenberg who he met, coincidentally, in The Three Tuns pub, home of Bowie’s earlier ‘Arts Lab’. For over 20 years, they wrote music for high-end advertising, films and TV. Geoff now manages the use and sale of his photographs of David Bowie around the world and has exhibited in St Petersburg, the USA and the UK, including the hugely successful ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll with Me’ exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery from September 2020 through to May 2022.
