The history of the vinyl record is documented in over 200 colour and black-and-white photographs, spiced with vinyl knowledge about the record press, sound furniture, record shops and record cafés. Art legends such as Andy Warhol shaped cover art, LPs such as the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" became coveted, highly traded collector's items, and many a scandalous cover made the record a cult object in the first place. If there is a top 5 list for vinyl fans, this outstanding illustrated book is right at the top!

Cult and cultural history around the black disc: collectors' items, cover art & co.
Over 200 photographs delight record collectors and music lovers alike.

Terry O'Neill
ID: 15486
Издательство: ACC Art Books

When Ziggy played The Marquee Club in Soho, London, in October 1973, most of those invited to the small venue did not realise that this would be the last performance David Bowie would ever give as Ziggy Stardust. Terry O’Neill, celebrated photographer, was given unprecedented access to document the event.

O’Neill captured Bowie and his crew backstage as they went through costume changes, and Bowie transformed into the character he’d soon put to rest. On stage, dodging television cameras and lights, O’Neill snapped the incredible stage presence for which Bowie and his crew had become renowned. O’Neill remembers of Bowie: “He became a character on stage. As much as a person takes a role in a play for the West End or on Broadway, learning the lines, putting on the costumes – this was, I think, the way Bowie treated his stage. This night at the Marquee, I witnessed a modern-day Hamlet – and it was Ziggy Stardust”.

Award-winning music writer Daniel Rachel interviews key contributors of the day, including O Neill, Ava Cherry, Amanda Lear and Geoff MacCormack along with new insights and memories from fans who were in the audience who played witness to this incredible moment.

- Rare and unseen images from Terry O'Neill's unprecedented access to David Bowie's last performance as Ziggy Stardust, including candid backstage shots
- New and original interviews from a host of people who witnessed the last performance, including Geoff MacCormack - one of Bowie's long-time friends and "Spider"; Suzy Ronson - Mick's wife and stylist; Ken Scott - sound engineer and producer; Ava Cherry - backing vocals, and many more

About the Author:

Terry O'Neill has had a star-studded career. He has been in the business of capturing the most iconic, candid, and unguarded moments of the famous and infamous for six decades. His reportage photography chronicled the evolution of fashion in the post-war era, and later the emergence of bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Animals, and icons like David Bowie and Elton John. He has been photographer-of-choice for a multitude of celebrities, ftom Sinatra and Audrey Hepburn to Raquel Welch and Paul Newman, and remains the only photographer to have captured shots not only of every James Bond to date, but also more than 25 Bond girls and a staggering 150 Oscar-nominated actors and actresses. O'Neill was awarded withthe Royal Society of Arts' highest honour, the Centenary Medal, in 2012.

Frida Giannini
ID: 16537
Издательство: Rizzoli

A dive into music history, from Joan Baez and Jimi Hendrix to Rihanna and Lady Gaga, exploring the eclectic interpretation of fashion and society.

Frida Giannini’s book travels through time, weaving between music and style from 1969 to today. It is an iconographic journey made up of visual evocations, comparisons and contrasts, testimonies, and anecdotes. The starting point is 1969, the year of Woodstock, David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” and the first man on the moon. It passes through the stages, concerts, and moments that made the history not only of music, but also of fashion.

The view that tells, approaches, and explores famous figures — paying particular attention to the Thin White Duke — eras, and fashion is that of Frida Giannini, an expert in both worlds, who has made fashion her profession and music her great passion. Music also accompanied her professionally in her creative inspirations and references, and in first-person encounters with the protagonists of the entertainment world in the 2000s.

This book also shines a spotlight on stage clothes, hairstyles, and sets, because the evolution of music accompanies the evolution of fashions, costumes, and changing society and vice versa, in a dialogue of influences, decades, and historical events.

About the Author:

Frida Giannini is an internationally renowned Italian designer who was Creative Director of Gucci for 10 years. From 1994 to 2001 she worked for Fendi, first as a ready-to-wear designer, then as head of accessories. Today she is a creative consultant for luxury brands in various categories, including interior design.

Music from the punk era transformed the world of music. If you could play three chords, you could make records. You didn’t even need a record label. You could start your own.

The same thing happened in graphic design. All you needed were a few sheets of Letraset and access to a photocopier, and you could make your own record covers. And lots of people did just that.

Action Time Vision: Punk & Post-Punk 7" Record Sleeves is a celebration of DIY graphics from the punk and post-punk eras. You might call it outsider graphic design.

With a few exceptions, trained designers rarely did 7” singles covers for this notoriously shouty and aggressive music. Apart from a few covers done by Barney Bubbles and Peter Saville, most punk and post-punk covers were designed by band members, label owners or friends.

Few of the sleeves showcased here are beautiful in the normal sense of the word. But they all have an urgency and an exhilarating disregard for design conventions that makes them exceptional. They are all clarion calls for independence and freedom from pop industry norms.

The work in this book is culled from the record collections of designer (and Unit Editions co-founder) Tony Brook, and leading punk scholar Russ Bestley. As one of the world’s leading authorities on punk and post-punk music, Russ has contributed an insightful essay to the book.

The book also features interviews with designer Malcolm Garrett, Mute founder Daniel Miller and Sniffin’ Glue editor and musician Mark Perry.

Author David Gahr, Text by Chris Murray
ID: 16057
Издательство: Rizzoli

An unprecedented look at a very young Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, from the group’s creation and early New Jersey days to their meteoric rise and seminal Born in the USA tour, in photographs almost all not previously published.

David Gahr (1922–2008) was tapped by Columbia Records designer John Berg to shoot cover art for Bruce Springsteen’s second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. Gahr’s earliest photographs of the musician showcase a youthful Springsteen, not even aged twenty-three, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on the eve of a career breakthrough. Gahr befriended the rising star, and over a span of approximately ten years he photographed Springsteen, both on- and offstage. Rare captures include Springsteen recording music, performing at the cramped venue Bottom Line weeks before the release of his seminal 1975 album Born to Run, and playing to legions of fans during his Born in the USA tour. Bruce Springsteen 1973–1986 is an unprecedented look back at Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their path to becoming rock legends.

About the Author:

David Gahr was one of music’s renowned but under-the-radar photographers. Starting in 1958when Moses Asch of Folkways Records brought his work to a larger audience, Gahr captured iconic images of some of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century, including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Miles Davis, to name only a few. Chris Murray is a writer and founder of Govinda Gallery, which represents some of the best rock music–related fine art photography and photographers in the world.

Bryan Adams
ID: 18832
Издательство: Steidl Verlag

This is the long-awaited reprint of Bryan Adams’ first comprehensive monograph of his portrait photography. In the late 1990s Adams became curious about making photographic self-portraits for his album covers, and so chose to pick up the camera himself. This serendipitous decision proved the beginning of a successful photographic career parallel to Adams’ impressive achievements as a singer, songwriter and producer. Exposed is a retrospective of his photography and features portraits of friends and colleagues in the entertainment, fashion and art industries. Including Morrissey, Ben Kingsley, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Louise Bourgeois, Lindsay Lohan and Judi Dench, among many others, the book “exposes” not only unknown facets of his subjects but also the depth of Adams’ photographic faculty.

About the Author:

Bryan Adams, born in 1959 in Ontario, divides his time between music and photography. Adams has photographed for magazines including Interview, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar, and British and German Vogue. In 2003 he founded Zoo Magazine for which he has received a Goldene Feder Award. In 2006 Adams was honored with a German Lead Award for his series of photographs of Mickey Rourke. Adams’ exhibitions include those held at the Saatchi Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in London, and Haus der Kunst in Munich. Steidl has published Adams’ Exposed (2012), Wounded: The Legacy of War (2013), Untitled (2016) and Homeless (2019).

Stuart Baker, Beth Lesser
ID: 17327
Издательство: Soul Jazz Records

New printing - with new introduction by Duro Olowu - of this definitive study and essential guide to Jamaican Dancehall in the 1980s featuring hundreds of exclusive photographs with accompanying text, interviews and biographies.

This book captures a previously unseen era of musical culture fashion and lifestyle. With unprecedented access to the incredibly vibrant music scene during this period, Beth Lesser’s photographs are a unique way into a previously hidden part of Jamaican culture. Dancehall is at the centre of Jamaican musical and cultural life. From its roots in Kingston in the 1950s to its heyday in the 1980s, Dancehall has conquered the globe also spreading to the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Europe and beyond.

Dancehall is a culture that encompasses music, fashion, drugs, guns, art, community, technology, and more. Many of today’s music and fashion styles can be traced back to Dancehall culture and continue to be influenced by it today.

Born in the 1950s out of the neighbourhood soundsystems of Kingston, Dancehall grew to its height in the 1980s before a massive influx of drugs and guns made the scene too dangerous for many.

Dancehall is an essential reference book for anyone interested in Reggae, as well as a unique photographic and textual source book of the musical, cultural and political life of Jamaica.

In the early 1980s, as Jamaica was in the throws of political and gang violence, Beth Lesser ventured where few others dared, and this book is a never-before-seen record of the exciting, dangerous and vibrant world of Dancehall. Beth Lesser’s book tells this story from its roots to its heights. Living in Jamaica in the late 70s and early 80s she photographed and documented a cultural explosion as producers, singers, DJs and soundsystems who all made a living out of the slums of Kingston.

About the Authors:

Beth Lesser is a noted music writer. In the early 1980s, as Jamaica was in the throes of political and gang violence, she ventured where few others dared, and produced this book – a unique record of the exciting, dangerous, and vibrant world of Dancehall.

The Early Days of Hip-Hop 1982-84; Cuba: Original Cover Art of Cuban Music; Dancehall: The Rise of Jamaican Dancehall Culture; Bossa Nova and the Rise of Brazilian Music in the 1960s; Reggae Soundsystem; Cover Art of Studio One Records; Voguing and the House Ballroom Scene of New York 1989-92; Kanaval: Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the Streets of Haiti; and Freedom Rhythm & Sound: Revolutionary Jazz Original Cover Art 1965-83. From street corners to corner offices, mixtapes made a huge impact on the music industry and hip-hop culture in New York City during the late ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s. Featuring a comprehensive collection of rare mixtape cover art, never-before-seen images, vintage tracklists, and exclusive interviews with Kid Capri, Brucie B, Mister Cee, Ron G, S&S, Doo Wop, Green Lantern, Lord Finesse, Clark Kent, Bobbito, Cipha Sounds, Havoc of Mobb Deep, the late, great DJ Kay Slay, and many more, including a special foreword by Fab 5 Freddy, Do Remember! captures an era in New York City that went on to inspire future hip-hop generations all over the world.

Miranda Lash, C. Ondine Chavoya, Jace Clayton
ID: 15673
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book on artist, musician, and DJ Eamon Ore-Giron who mines the complex nature of Latinx identity, the history of the Americas, and the many legacies of abstraction in art.

Over the course of his career, Eamon Ore-Giron has examined the personal and historical ramifications of cultural hybridity. Raised in Tucson, Ore-Giron is inspired by his roots in the American Southwest, his visits to his father’s hometown of Huancayo, Peru, and his time spent as a practicing artist in California and Mexico. This catalogue brings together for the first time three pivotal chapters in Ore-Giron’s career: his Southwest and Peruvian-inspired figurative works from the 2000s; his paintings from the 2010s that engaged elements of both figuration and abstraction, including an ongoing series focused on Mesoamerican deities; and the sublime gold-based paintings from his recent “Infinite Regress” series.

Curator Miranda Lash, along with celebrated scholars C. Ondine Chavoya and Jace Clayton, explore Ore-Giron’s approach to de-colonizing the medium of painting, his impact within in the Los Angeles art scene, and his seminal work as a DJ who highlights the intersections between North and South American sound.

About the Author:

Miranda Lash is the Ellen Bruss Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. C. Ondine Chavoya is a Professor of Art History and Latina/o/x Studies at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Jace Clayton is an artist and writer based in New York City, also known for his work as DJ /rupture.

Author Elizabeth Way and Elena Romero, Foreword by Slick Rick
ID: 15688
Издательство: Rizzoli

On a hot summer night in August of 1973, DJ Kool Herc and his sister, Cindy, put on a “back to school jam” in the rec room of their apartment block at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the West Bronx. The rest is history. The birth of hip hop rippled out across the globe, influencing music and fashion for generations.

Fresh Fly Fabulous: 50 Years of Hip Hop Style draws on the experiences and memories of those who were there, from a foreword by Slick Rick, to interviews with Disco Fever club owner Sal Abbatiello and designers Dapper Dan and April Walker, to chapters from Vibe stylist Emil Wilbekin and former editor of The Source Kim Osorio. Topics cover the range of hip hop’s influential style over the past half century, tracing the evolution from early hip hop style, born of aspiration, individuality, and practicality to contemporary fashion steeped in luxury brands.

Hip hop style is a local story, told through spotlights on Times Square as an early fashion space, as well as an international phenomenon, shown in the prominence of hip hop fashion leaders on red carpets. Inventiveness, the art of the remix, and a diverse set of influences are consistent themes in sections that examine hip hop style from hair and nails to shoes and sneakers.

Fresh Fly Fabulous is the definitive source for hip hop style, brought to life by the groundbreaking photographers who captured it firsthand, including Janette Beckman, Jamel Shabazz, and Ernie Paniccioli.

About the Author:

Elizabeth Way serves as associate curator at The Museum at FIT and author of Black Designers in American Fashion. Elena Romero serves as assistant professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology and is a correspondent for CUNY-TV's magazine show LATINAS. Slick Rick is an iconic rapper, producer, and trendsetter whose hip hop classic with Doug E. Fresh "La Di Da Di" (1986) helped establish hip hop’s love affair with fashion.
