Renowned Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt was born in Baumgarten, a suburb of Vienna. Excited by the artists in other countries who were beginning to rebel against orthodoxy Klimt began to develop new ideas, and in 1897 he co-founded the Vienna Secession. The artists of the Vienna Secession did not form a single ‘school’; they were individuals, many of whom worked in very different fields, and they certainly approached their work in very different ways. But they shared similar goals and priorities in seeking to break free of the constraints of the late nineteenth century academic art establishment. In this powerful work, Klimt sought to portray the lifecycle of women in a realistic light. Awarded the gold medal at the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte in Rome in 1911, this painting illustrates the passing of time. In the full artwork, an elderly naked woman weeps and a young mother embraces her sleeping baby daughter.

Gustav Klimt is one of the best known artists of the Viennese Secession and the Art Nouveau movement. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I is part of the artist’s groundbreaking Golden Phase. Inspired by Byzantine mosaics, the painting is layered with gold and silver leaf, and embellished with a textured gesso relief of elaborate geometric patterns. Klimt’s work was crucial in the evolution of art from the nineteenth century to the twentieth, and his influence on illustration was momentous. Throughout the second half of the twentieth century, his work became particularly appreciated and, by the early twenty-first century, his paintings, drawings and prints commanded some of the highest prices ever recorded for individual works of art.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) is world famous for his golden, ornamental works, his flowing colours and his sensuous portrayal of women. But where did he find the inspiration for his multi-faceted oeuvre? How well did he know Vincent van Gogh? Did he ever see a picture by Henri Matisse? Large-format comparisons reveal Klimt’s artistic sources.

Modern European art was omnipresent in Vienna in around 1900 – in the Vienna Secession, in galleries, art magazines and private collections. The Viennese artist Gustav Klimt was receptive for the pictorial language of his contemporaries like Alma-Tadema, Minne, Rodin, Toorop, Hodler, Van Gogh, Monet, Khnopff, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler and Matisse, and adapted elements from a variety of artistic styles. The encounter between his works and those of the artists with whom he was associated reveals significant and often surprising parallels.

Artists:
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema | Aubrey Beardsley | Ferdinand Hodler | Akseli Gallen-Kallela | Gustav Klimt | Lord Frederic Leighton |  Margaret MacDonald-Mackintosh | Edouard Manet | Henri Matisse | Claude Monet | Edvard Munch | Auguste Rodin | Giovanni Segantini | Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec | Kees van Dongen | Vincent van Gogh | Theo Van Rysselberghe | Franz von Stuck | James Abbott MacNeill Whistler et. al.

Gold, flowers, and female beauty. The work of the decadent Austrian symbolist

The unfading popularity of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) attests not only to the particular appeal of his luxuriant painting but also to the universal themes with which he worked: love, feminine beauty, ageing, and death.

The son of a goldsmith, Klimt created surfaces of ornate and jewel-like luminosity which show influence of both Egyptian and Japanese art. Through paintings, murals, and friezes, his work is defined by radiant colour, fluid lines, floral elements, and mosaic-like patterning.

With a number of subjects dealing with sensuality and desire as well as anxiety and despair, all this iridescence is also suffused with feeling. Klimt's numerous images of women, characterized by curvaceous forms, tender flesh, red lips and flushed cheeks, were particularly charged with passion, at a time when such frank eroticism was still taboo in Viennese upper-middle-class society.

This book presents a selection of Klimt's work, introducing his pictorial world of decoration and desire, as well as his influence on artists to come.

Gustav Klimt is renowned as a quintessential artist of the art nouveau movement, but he was one of a number of Viennese artists who strove to break free of the constraints of the late 19th Century academic art establishment. The Secessionists were united, not in the style of their work, but their desire for freedom, so although there are echoes of similarity in the work of Klimt, Schiele, Kolomon Moser and the many other fine artists, their distinction lies in their magnificent difference. This new illustrated book focuses on the rich diversity of the movement and offers a sumptuous gift of colour and glamour for every art lover.

Now available again, this visually stunning collection of Gustav Klimt's landscape paintings brings to light a lesser-known aspect of the Viennese painter's oeuvre.

While Gustav Klimt is largely revered for his opulent, symbol-laden portraits of the Viennese bourgeoisie, these works were just one aspect of his artistic expression. His landscapes represent an important facet of his career and are a valuable contribution to the school of European nature painting. For many years the artist travelled to the Austrian and Italian countryside during the summer, where he took advantage of the extraordinary light and spectacular hues to paint and sketch landscapes.

Among the most exquisite of Klimt's landscapes are those in which he experimented with composition and style. Accompanied by scholarly essays, the images reproduced in this book comprise all extant landscapes from this brilliant artist, proving that his mastery extends beyond portraiture and revealing themes that appeared throughout his life's work.

Eloquent and provocative drawings, exquisitely reproduced, provide an intimate encounter with these two daring Austrian masters.

Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele were two of the most daring and controversial artists in Vienna during the culturally turbulent decades around the turn of the 20th century. They worked out their provocative depictions of the human body, created in a search for psychological truth as well as physical realism, in the direct and intimate medium of drawing. In Klimt’s studies, the distinctive character or unsettling emotional resonance of the person portrayed comes through in the artist’s delicate, sinuous lines. The striking presence of the individual in Schiele’s more finished drawings, often rendered with extreme frankness and bold colouration, pulses with dramatic immediacy. Although Klimt was almost thirty years Schiele’s senior, he quickly recognized and encouraged the younger artist’s extraordinary talent.

The sixty important works exquisitely reproduced in large format in this volume reach from each artist’s early academic studies to more incisive and unconventional explorations of nature, psychology, sexuality and spirituality. By giving viewers access to these artists’ worlds, this album of unforgettable drawings provides a direct connection to the minds of two master draftsmen exploring the limits of representation, as well as the shock of recognition at seeing our own inner lives caught on paper.

Gustav Klimt, well known for his sensual, arresting depictions of women (The Kiss, Fulfillment, The Tree of Life), was a founder of the Viennese Secession movement at the turn of the 20th century, Vienna's own Art Nouveau.

His extravagant work was an obsessive manifestation of the dazzling intellectual society of his time and he painted very large canvases combining oils with gold foil. This beautiful new book brings together a wide selection of Klimt’s magnificent work.

Fall under the spell of Gustav Klimt. Through luminous spreads and carefully curated details, the monograph traces the repertoire of Japanese, Byzantine, and allegorical stimuli that informed Klimt’s flattened perspectives, his symbolic vocabulary, and his mosaic-like textures. Drawing upon contemporary critics and voices, the book also examines the art world’s polarized reception to Klimt’s pictures as much as his own stylistic trajectory. From his landscape painting to erotic works to the controversial ceiling for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna, we see how Klimt’s admixture of tradition and daring divided the press and public — becried by some as a pornographer, hailed by others as a modern maestro.

The fascinating story behind the Viennese Secession, the art movement that shocked European society at the turn of the nineteenth century

The rebel artists of Vienna overwhelmed the artistic establishment of Europe at the end of the 19th century, having seceded from the traditional Viennese institutions of fine art and named themselves the Vienna Secession. Their works shocked a conservative public, but their daring sensibilities and dedication to the applied arts and architecture soon brought them an enthusiastic following and wealthy patronage. The boldly modernist paintings of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and others were matched by the buildings and applied designs of architects such as Joseph Maria Olbrich, who created the Secession Building as an architectural manifesto for the group. This classic book, now updated and with additional colour illustrations and a completely new introductory chapter, brilliantly traces the course of this influential artistic movement.
