Designing a childcare facility, whether it is a créche, kindergarten, or preschool, involves many challenges. The architect must focus on the needs of the users, who include both the children and the adult carers, while complying with a large number of rules and regulations, which are made all the more complex by the fact that they rarely reference buildings for children explicitly. But above all, the architect must create structures that optimally meet the contemporary pedagogical and architectural requirements of an institution dedicated to children.

This is the first manual specially dedicated to the long-neglected kindergarten building typology. It presents 60 contemporary childcare buildings from across the world in detail, with large photos, plans, and drawings, providing deep insights into what is an exceedingly complicated design task. Moreover, the book outlines ten design parameters that architects can turn to for guidance. Finally, specialist articles by experts delve deeper into the practical considerations that are required to successfully plan, design, and operate a childcare facility.

Chisinau, today the capital and largest city of the Republic of Moldova, has undergone tumultuous changes under the successive political regimes that marked the twentieth century. Once part of the territory seized by the Russian Empire, it was integrated into the Romanian Kingdom during the interwar period, before being annexed by the USSR, like all of Bessarabia, and radically transformed into a socialist city.

This guide focuses on the latter period. The distinct urbanistic and architectural tendencies after the Second World War are reflected in the five segments of the book: the Stalinist Empire, Soviet Modernism, Postmodernism, Soviet Brutalism, and the Industrial City. Each reflects the essential Soviet mandate to build not only a new city, but also a new society.

In addition to photographic documentation and critical analysis of socialist architecture, the guide also includes essays on Chisinau’s development between 1945 and 1989, devoted among other things to the city’s cinemas and life in ‘microraions’.

About the Author:

Stefan Rusu (born 1964) is a freelance curator and urban researcher currently based in Islamabad, Pakistan. Through his projects, he contextualised in a critical manner the political transformation processes and the changes occurring in post-socialist societies after 1989 that influenced the way people and communities relate to the use of public space. His recent initiative, Insular Modernities, investigates how the socialist architecture designed and built in Eastern Europe is maintained and perceived today at the peripheries of the former empire and explores modernist architectural heritage in various formats (exhibitions, publications, documentaries, social media platforms, etc.).

We all know that when it comes to room transformation one of the quickest ways to make a large impact is a change in color. What you may not know is that color is rarely straightforward. What impact does a room's lighting have on color? How can furniture shape or fabric texture affect color? Any chrome or brass accents in the room? Are the walls textured? And watch out for those deceptively simple neutrals...

The Color Idea Book teaches you the nuances in playing with color and inspires and encourages you to experiment with color in your home. Trust designer Robin Strangis to steer you around "colorful" pitfalls while you go full speed ahead toward achieving exactly the results you desire!

The choice to feature colour as a focal point in architecture makes it own bold statement. This title demonstrates how colour enhances and contextualises the environment of the projects within. The visual language of color can communicate symbols, status, spirit, strength, and a sense of purpose, and its new applications to buildings represent a great leap in the discipline of architecture. Brighten it Up promises to be a standard work on the subject that every architect and architectural office will want to have handy in their library, in addition to new enthusiasts.

Home Inspirations by teNeues goes into the next round – and has never been more relevant. After all, when the world around us is in shambles, a home with a feel-good vibe is essential. For some, a pared-down aesthetic that exudes a pleasant homeliness may be the right path to well-deserved ease; for others, a cheerful riot of colour is a fitting counterpart to the monochromatic daily grind. Two very different approaches that nevertheless pursue the same goal: to conjure up a real retreat from a simple living space.

The power of colours and their influence on our psychological well-being has long been no secret. What fashion is currently demonstrating with the dopamine dressing trend is now being continued in interior design. True to the motto Good-Vibes-Only, colourful good-mood boosters are being used as eye-catchers, individual accents or even in an all-over look. As proven mood lifters, the polarizing color elements represent optimism and a joie de vivre.

In the usual teNeues quality with a high-quality layout, large-format images and exciting content, the new illustrated books in the freshly launched series now skilfully set the scene for two further interior trends, elegantly acting as decorative eye-catching pieces themselves. A practical index, which offers support in the search for brands and manufacturers, as well as fascinating rooms for re-styling make the books true inspirational treasures for every interior enthusiast.

Grand designs for grandparents, grandkids, and everybody in between.

Three, four, or sometimes more generations of the same family often opt to live together under one roof. The 20th-century emphasis on a single-family home for suburbanites or a swanky bachelor pad is falling short of modern needs, instead, we are seeing more tiers of the family unit preferring to live together.

Come Together explores the why, what, where, and perhaps most importantly, the how, of homes that succeed to be liveable for multiple generations. With insight from inhabitants cohabiting in multi-generational homes, this book explores subjects such as the opportunity to care for one another, how to save on costs, and why this lifestyle can forge closer relationships. Featuring architecturally stunning designs from around the globe and voices of leading architects championing the benefits of this family-style living, Come Together points to the changing face of the family home.

About the Author:

Joann Plockova is a renowned design writer who contributes to the New York Times international homes section, which is where a feature on multigenerational homes fueled her interest in this revived way of living. She also writes for the likes of MonocleAzure, and the Financial Times House & Home. She lives and works from Prague, her adopted home, and the US, her original one.

The design of open spaces around or within the premises of companies is an increasingly important focus area of landscape architecture. Their conceptual design depends on whether the company garden is open to the public or rather dedicated to employees only.

On the one hand, these projects are representative of the respective firm and constitute part of the corporate identity. On the other hand, in times of the increased awareness of work-life balance, flexible working and communication structures, as well as global networking, they are an integral part of innovative workplace concepts. This volume reveals the remarkable diversity of design possibilities for company gardens from around the world.
