Explore creativity while learning how to draw lively, unique sketches of your favorite houses, shops, landmarks, and other buildings.

Learning to sketch can be intimidating, especially when drawing subjects like architecture that seem to rely on perfect perspective, straight lines, and complex forms. In Housesketching, artist and instructor Albert Kiefer (Housesketcher) shares his signature techniques that will enable and empower you to abandon perfectionism and learn to sketch and express yourself creatively, like his tens of thousands of students have done. Whether you work in pen and ink and alcohol markers like Albert, or use your favorite medium, you will learn how to create amazingly expressive drawings.

From his whimsical linework to his playful use of perspective to his energetic colorwork, Albert’s approach can be applied to any type or style of building—or any subject at all! Housesketching shows how to go beyond representation to create sketches that are evocative, vibrant, and completely unique.

With this encouraging guide, you will learn how to:

- Find inspiration and choose subjects to sketch—either en plein air or from photos
- Compose your sketch with placement, contrast, techniques for guiding the eye, and balance
- Use perspective—but only as much as you need to know!—to create a convincing sketch
- Make a sketch your own through editing, exaggeration, point of view, and creating a back story
- Use color and details to finish and embellish your sketches
- Share your sketches online

Fifteen step-by-step projects take you through Albert’s process in detail, so you can sketch alongside him and learn what makes his drawings so dynamic. QR codes link to videos that provide further insight into essential techniques.

Whether you’re completely new to sketching, interested in learning to sketch architecture, or looking to draw more expressively and creatively, Housesketching will give you all the tools, inspiration, and encouragement you need.

About the Author:

Albert Kiefer is a freelance concept artist from the Netherlands. As a professional digital artist, Albert began to miss more traditional art forms and returned to his love for sketching, which led to his popular Instagram page, Housesketcher, and to teaching his techniques for expressive sketching in his wildly popular Domestika class, “Expressive Architectural Sketching with Colored Markers.” His work is featured in two books by French publisher ELYTIS: Au Japon!, a collection of sketches of Japanese buildings, and Harley Davidson Sketchbook.

John Brookes MBE
ID: 18593
Издательство: Pimpernel

Beginning in the 1960s, John Brookes MBE (1933–2018) revolutionized garden design, with a new design philosophy and methodology that was rooted in the notion that gardens are about the people who live in them. Recognizing the demands of the contemporary lifestyle, he broke with previous labour-intensive garden design traditions and the emphasis on showcasing plants. Instead he promoted using gardens as extensions of the home.  He introduced this notion in his 1969 book, A Room Outside, which also contained practical advice on materials, methodology, and planting. His approach was unprecedented and included the then-novel idea that people of all income levels could have designed, fashionable gardens tailored to their needs, low-maintenance, and beautiful.

John taught and lectured around the world and, thanks to his energetic writing, teaching and media appearances, he became regarded as the ‘king’ and ‘godfather’ of garden and landscape design. How to Design a Garden is an informative and ultimately practical collection of his thoughts and advice selected from countless writings and lectures given to students, professionals and the public around the world.

In addition to his teaching on how to design a garden, the book has two key themes – environmental sustainability and a focus on the local vernacular. They show how far ahead he was of his time and to what a great extent his teaching remains relevant to garden-makers today.

About the Author:

John Brookes (1933-2018) designed gardens all around the world, among them the College Green Garden at Westminster Abbey, the English Walled Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Barakura English Garden in Tateshina, Japan, the Zespol Palace Park in Kikole, Poland, and many gardens in Russia, the Middle East, and all over Europe and North and South America. He also taught garden design all over the world, and in 1980 he founded the Clock House School of Garden Design at Denmans, West Sussex. John Brookes was awarded an MBE for garden design and services to horticulture, the Award of Distinction of the American Association of Professional Landscape Designers, the Garden Writers’ Association of America Award of Excellence, and countless other international awards, including four Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medals. He lived at Denmans in West Sussex

Taking examples from major European cities, Public Spaces and Urbanity is a practical guide demonstrating what urban development with a human face might look like. This involves renewing and enhancing humane cities using architecture on a human scale while taking their history into account. Thus the book follows the tradition established by Jan Gehl that regards urban space as a framework for people to live in and socialise.

The European tradition of the dense classical city marks the point of departure for this book. Special emphasis is placed on physical and spatial parameters, on development patterns and building types, on the guiding principles governing access, and on interconnections with public roads and pathways – all of which form the foundations of urban life as well as cities that provide safety and security.

The book is divided into ten thematic chapters, each providing a definition and general outline of core challenges together with proposals for meeting them. A historical outline of urban development and the practically organised thematic structure underlying concepts discussed allow the examples given to greatly broaden the field of understanding around this topic.

Paul Jackson

Издательство: Laurence King Publishing

This book explains, in simple steps and non-mathematical terminology, how to create repeat patterns in a line, on the plane, as tiles and as Escher-like repeats. The book also shows how to make 'wallpaper repeats', where the elements of the pattern merge into each other, apparently seamlessly.

Using letters as the basic elements, the book demonstrates how all repeat pattern-making comes out of four simple operations: translation, rotation, reflection and glide reflection. It will provide the definitive one-stop pattern-making resource for professional designers and students across disciplines, from textiles and fashion to graphic design and architecture.

About the Author:

Paul Jackson is the author of over 30 books on paper arts and crafts. He has taught the techniques of folding on over 150 university level design courses in the UK, Germany, Belgium, the US, Canada and Israel and been a 'folding consultant' for companies such as Nike and Siemens.

Piet Oudolf, Noel Kingsbury
ID: 13610
Издательство: Monacelli Press

An intimate look at the personal garden of the Dutch landscape designer renowned for his plantings at the High Line in New York City, and Lurie Garden at Chicago's Millennium Park.

Hummelo--near the village of the same name in Gelderland in the eastern Netherlands -- is visited by thousands of gardeners seeking inspiration each year. It is Piet Oudolf's home, his personal garden laboratory, a former nursery run by his wife Anja, and the place where he first tested new designs and created the new varieties of perennials that are now widely available.

A follow-up to Oudolf's successful Landscapes in Landscapes -- Hummelo tells the story of how the garden has evolved over the past three decades since Oudolf, Anja, and their two young sons moved onto the property, with its loamy sand and derelict, wood stove-heated farmhouse, in 1982. Text by noted garden author and longtime personal friend Noel Kingsbury places Hummelo in context within gardening history, from The Netherlands' counterculture and nascent green movement of the 1960s, to prairie restoration in the American Midwest, and shows how its development has mirrored that of Oudolf's own outstanding career and unique naturalistic aesthetic.

Oudolf has long been at the forefront of the Dutch Wave and New Perennial Style movements in garden design, which have ecological considerations at their base. His work stresses a deep knowledge of plants, eschewing short-lived annuals in favor of perennials that can be appreciated for both structure and blooms in every season. He is credited for leading the way to today's focus on sustainability in garden design.

The book will appeal to readers who favor beautiful, biodiverse, and ever-changing plantings: seed heads, grasses, sedges, and winter silhouettes. They will be drawn into its pages by lush photography, often demonstrating how Oudolf views his own work, and providing rare glimpses into his daily life. Short essays highlight important techniques, including scatter plants and matrix planting, and introduce other famed landscape designers -- Karl Foerster, Henk Gerritsen, Rob Leopold, Ernst Pagels, and Mien Ruys -- to create a full panorama of the movement Oudolf now leads.

About the Authors:

Piet Oudolf is among the world’s most innovative garden designers and a leading exponent of naturalistic planting, a style that takes inspiration from nature but employs artistic skill in creating planting schemes. Oudolf's extensive work over 30 years of practice includes public and private gardens all over the world. He is best known for his work on the High Line and Battery Park in New York, the Lurie Garden in Chicago's Millennium Park, and Potters Fields in London.

Noel Kingsbury is a researcher, writer, and teacher. A gardener since childhood, he has run a nursery, designed gardens and public spaces, and done doctoral research at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Landscape on the ecology of ornamental perennials. He lives and gardens in the Welsh Borders near Hay-on-Wye.

Spiralling Ideas. Friedensreich Hundertwasser, hero of fluid forms and ecology

Architect, artist, ecological visionary, Friedensreich Hundertwasser left a thrilling trail of imagination and activism in buildings, paintings, manifestos, and more. From naked addresses and tree-planting campaigns to the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, Hundertwasser refused the straight line in every sense. His vision was as much for society at large as for singular buildings.

Friedrich Stowasser, born in Vienna in 1928, called himself Friedensreich Hundertwasser Regentag Dunkelbunt. True to the variety of his names, his practice spanned innumerable forms — from painting and designing buildings to creating stamps and coins — and his titles were many: environmental activist, philosopher, individualist, architect, ecologist, and visual artist. He was, in his own words, “one who awakens identities.”

Across his work, Hundertwasser embraced the biomorphic, the irregular, and the irrational. Drawing inspiration from masters as varied as Gaudí and Gustav Klimt, his categorical rejection of the “godless and immoral” straight line, as well as his boycott of “monotonous architecture,” infused his bold, colourful works with a vitality that set him aside from most. Born of this fervent activism and unique universe was his own belief system, called “transautomatism,” which privileged the viewer’s experience above all. Whether he was planting trees in urban settings or proclaiming the “right to a window,” Hundertwasser’s visions of a harmonious future between humans and nature continue to resonate with increasing urgency.

Once out of print, this re-edition of a TASCHEN classic works in close collaboration with the Hundertwasser Foundation to present the Viennese master’s oeuvre in all its different facets. Because his work is, by nature, virtually inseparable from his biography, private life, and political actions, a vivid portrait of Hundertwasser takes shape through his own lens. Excerpts from conversations between the author and the artist add immediacy and authenticity to this intimate monograph.

The author:

Harry Rand studied at the City College of New York and at Harvard University, where he completed his doctorate on the iconography of Arshile Gorky in 1974. He has published numerous books and essays on 20th-century painting and sculpture and is now Curator in the Division of Political History at the National Museum of American History (Smithsonian Institution) in Washington, D.C.

Revolt Against the Straight Line. The highly irregular architecture of a freethinking artist

Biomorphic forms, unbridled colour, and gentle chaos characterize the architecture of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This monograph compiles his architectural works, presenting all his building projects, whether realized or not. Preparatory sketches, models, and photographs illuminate a pioneering and environmentally sensitive vision, intent on a harmonious coexistence with nature.

“A house must be a living, organic entity that develops and constantly changes,” stated Friedensreich Hundertwasser in one of his arguments for his nature- and human-oriented architecture. Success vindicated his vision: roof afforestation, organic forms, colourful façades, uneven floors, irregularly positioned windows, gilded onion domes — Hundertwasser’s architecture is unmistakable.

From the beginning of his artistic career in the ’50s, Hundertwasser was preoccupied with architecture in his painting. Then began his engagement with manifestos, essays, and demonstrations; later followed architectural models in which he illustrated, for example, his ideas on roof afforestation and an individual’s right to his very own window. As an “architectural doctor” he created unregimented irregularities and realized exemplary architectural projects.

This comprehensive directory of Hundertwasser’s architectural works presents all his buildings and projects, whether realized or not, tracing them from the first sketches through to models and completion. Dr. Andrea Christa Fürst, a longtime employee of the Hundertwasser Archive, made a major contribution to this publication.

The editor:

Angelika Taschen studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg, gaining her doctorate in 1986. Working for TASCHEN from 1987 to 2010, she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel, and lifestyle.

A sequel to the extremely popular I Adulted: Stickers for Grown-Ups, I Adulted at Work! is a whimsically illustrated book containing 250 removable stickers that congratulate supposed grown-ups on a job well done . . . or at least a job done.

Despite official reports, most adults feel completely and totally ill-prepared to deal. With anything. They still, as purportedly self-sufficient grown-ups, look toward older generations and think, "How did they do that?" So the easiest and best way to find comfort is to look not ahead at uncertainty (or, heaven forbid, around at the chaos currently surrounding them), but to the past to their simpler childhoods. And it is with brightly colored stickers in the workplace that they will finally find peace of mind. For a little while, at least.
Filled with 250 full-color removable stickers that can be used to decorate journals, notebooks, or your lapel to proudly and publicly proclaim work life's little victories, I Adulted at Work! is the ideal nostalgic and practical book for anyone who feels a sense of accomplishment by making it through a day on the job without calling their mother for help.

Cutting-edge examples of the use of optical illusion in design — from trompe l’oeil to anamorphosis — to solve various challenges, be they space or budget-related, or that act as aesthetic features in architecture and the fields that rub elbows with it: art, design, and furniture.

This magical volume presents the startling world of illusion in design as employed by today’s architects, interior designers, furniture designers, and others at work bending the appearance of reality for purposes of aesthetics or practicality or fun. From a faux bookcase that masks a room or Prohibition-style bar, to the mind-boggling Escher-like effects achieved by Casa Ceramica, whose optical illusion of a floor dips into valleys and rises into mounds (but is in reality flat), the book is a revelation and an inspiration. It offers to us the possibility that nearly anything can be done, if it can be imagined — even in our own homes.

The authors look at residences across the globe, as well as spaces beyond the home, that utilize a myriad of surprising techniques.

Included are projects by conceptual designers such as Studio Malka and Vector Architects, as well as established practitioners such as Ferguson and Shamamian, G. P. Schafer, Peter Pennoyer, Redd/Kaihoi, and others, and all will surprise and engage the inspired viewer who will see that nearly anything can be done, if it can be imagined.

Exploring the art, architecture, and design of memorials around the world from the late twentieth century to today

An extraordinary book that explores the art, architecture, and design of memorials around the world from the late twentieth century to today – an important book for our time

Memorials hold a special position in the cultural memory of communities, and collective consciousness of communities, cities, and countries. In Memory Of presents an extraordinary and moving collection of more than 60 exceptional structures commemorating some of the most destructive events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including war, genocide, terrorism, famine, and slavery from around the world.

This important book highlights memorials built since 1982, featuring works from Berlin to Washington, D.C., from Montgomery, Alabama to Santiago, Chile, each urging us never to forget.

In Memory Of features memorials designed by some of today's leading architects, including David Adjaye, Tadao Ando, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Peter Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind, Maya Lin, Snøhetta, and Peter Zumthor. It also features memorials designed by artists like Elmgreen & Dragset, Isamu Noguchi, Taryn Simon, and Rachel Whiteread. The book includes well-known structures like Maya Lin's iconic Vietnam War Memorial, completed in 1982 in Washington, D.C. and more recent ones like the poignant National Memorial for Peace and Justice, completed by MASS Design Group in Montgomery, Alabama in 2018.

With thoughtful essays on the subjects of hope, strength, grief, loss, and fear, and a moving foreword by Sir David Adjaye, In Memory Of helps to contextualize the projects and addresses the emotional aspects of memorialization. Beautifully designed with a minimal, reflective cover, and illustrated with 200 photographs, this book calls out to be experienced, felt, looked at, interpreted, and read in a variety of ways.
