A fresh perspective on the work of the most important figures of classical design from the seventeenth century to the present.

Classical design employs a rich language developed across twenty-five centuries and many cultures. It is a language of details understood worldwide, with its powerful vocabulary of subtle nuance and inflection. Classical Interiors: Historical and Contemporary, a spectacular presentation of the myriad varieties of classical forms, demonstrates the enduring lessons of traditional interiors for designers and architects today.

Extensively illustrated essays devoted to the development of classical design, from its ancient sources through its revivals from the seventeenth century to the present day, are written by noted historians David Watkin and Carol A. Hrvol Flores and architect and designer Richard Sammons.

Portfolios of contemporary projects present the award-winning work of Juan Pablo Molyneux, Studio Peregalli, Quinlan & Francis Terry, Fairfax & Sammons, Gil Schafer, Historical Concepts, Ferguson & Shamamian, Allan Greenberg, Robert A. M. Stern, and many others.

Classical Interiors: Historical and Contemporary is the authoritative survey of the best of classical design.

In her third book, Cocoon: Creating Homes with Heart, Ali Heath, invites the reader to create a home sanctuary that focuses on the human touch, as an antidote to our fast-paced, tech-driven modern world. This way of decorating is so much more than just a look or style - it's about taking a holistic approach that draws upon all our senses, not just the visual, and connects us more meaningfully to ourselves and our surroundings. In the past creating a sanctuary was about the decoration of a few key rooms, now it is about how the whole home makes us feel.

Cocooning is not about isolation or shutting down and does not have to mean going off-grid - it is simply about tuning back into our emotions and creativity to satisfy our need for comfort and wonder. Divided into three informative chapters: Cocooning, Feeling and Living, the book explores the homes of 13 creatives from around the world, including architects, antique dealers, furniture makers and artists in the UK, France, Spain, Italy and Australia. With everything from small inner-city sanctuaries to spacious island retreats, Cocoon celebrates a design approach that speaks to the heart.

Philip Mitchell and Judith Nasatir, Foreword by Bunny Williams
ID: 16194
Издательство: Rizzoli

Modern maximalist designer Philip Mitchell reveals his talent for blending collections, family heirlooms, contemporary art, and accessories in visually creative environments that are brimming with personality, color, authenticity, and warmth.

The elegant, clean classicism of Philip Mitchell’s style is on full display in these homes, where he masterfully incorporates a wide-ranging mix of antiques, vintage collectibles, and contemporary pieces — everything from inherited furniture collections to modern art — in rooms that are filled with memories and warmth. As a master of what he calls modern maximalism, Mitchell embraces the challenge of taking wonderful things that a homeowner already has and making more of them. Once Mitchell has established a connecting thread among a variety of disparate pieces — whether through finish, material, scale, color, texture, or line — he starts the process of building the relationships that bring a space to life.

Brilliant photographs take readers on in-depth tours of nine homes, ranging from an elegant Upper East Side pied-à-terre to a classic cottage on the water in Nova Scotia. Mitchell’s personal narrative in elegant text enlightens, while his takeaways accompanying each home help readers understand how to blend new and old, mix colors and patterns, and fill a home with an eclectic mix that is truly their own.

The last decade has witnessed major changes in the design of higher education institutions, keeping pace with the demands of broadening curricula, changing student expectations and the increasing importance of technology on campuses. New pathways forged in scientific research present a particularly exciting challenge to architects, who have responded with unprecedented and inventive laboratories and workspaces. Furthermore, the widespread introduction of additional departments and courses demands a corresponding growing diversity in the buildings in which they are housed. The resulting flood of new publications to be stored and accessed has led to the emergence of numerous new libraries.

Projects from around the globe are showcased in this volume, representing functional and stylistic diversity across this exciting and increasingly international field. These campuses set themselves apart as pioneering and inspirational, both architecturally and for those who live, work and study in them.

This memo-game is based on a very special concept: the colors follow the format used in Johannes Itten’s color theory: red for a square, blue for a circle, yellow for a triangle, orange for a trapezium, green for a spherical triangle, and purple for an ellipse. The colors are shown with the corresponding form, which increases their specific impression.

Furthermore, each color is present in six different nuances; this increases the perception of the color tones and supports the creative process of finding new names to specify the individual forms. As the cards are turned over new color contrasts are revealed; these can also be used to intensify knowledge of color theory. Thus, these cards must not just be used for playing the memo-game, they can also be used for inspiration and for experimenting with different color combinations, series and tones.

As far back as the earliest Greek temples, color has been an integral part of architecture but also one of its least understood elements.

Color theory is rarely taught in architecture schools, leaving architects to puzzle out the hows and whys of which colors to select and how they interact, complement, or clash. Color for Architects is profusely illustrated and provides a clear, concise primer on color for designers of every kind.

This latest volume in our Architecture Briefs series combines the theoretical and practical, providing the basics on which to build a fuller mastery of this essential component of design. A wealth of built examples, exercises, and activities allows students to apply their learning of color to real-world situations.

The call of the wild has never looked as stylish as in these homes nestled in the French countryside, crafted by families pursuing a new form of country living.

A manor next to an elegant seventeenth-century castle in a picturesque village, a restored four-hundred-year-old windmill, or a ruin in the Barbizon forest transformed into a contemporary timber house — our trio of authors saw the potential in these rural homes and took the leap into a life rhythmed by nature. But how did these urban dwellers step away from the glamour of Paris, and why haven’t they looked back?

A calmer life enriched by its surroundings, with more space at home, a burgeoning garden, and a relaxed ambience is a seductive combination. But a country house is different from a cozy apartment, just steps from modern conveniences. In their search for a deeper experience, they embarked on a long-term project that required planning and effort, but it brought unexpected joy along with the challenges.

Life in the countryside takes adjustment and there is much to be learned — from furnishing and organizing your home to getting the most from nature and your garden, and from dressing to suit your new setting to hosting relaxed soirées where you’ll linger over dinner with your guests. This is the art of countryfication. Alongside portraits of similar-minded individuals and families who have adopted country living, this book provides insight, practical advice, and recipes that celebrate life in the countryside, all while retaining a Parisian flair.

A celebration of the innovative, artisanal, and sustainable living exemplified by contemporary Dutch interiors.

With a carefully curated collection of interiors, including historic canal houses, restored farms, and green homes, belonging to interior designers, product designers, architects, and artists, this book showcases creative and resourceful living. These properties have been created or renovated and brought into the twenty-first century with typical Dutch style and sensibility — environmentally friendly, imaginative uses of space filled with color and charm and never to be taken too seriously.

Each home in the book reflects the personality and spirit of the people who inhabit it. From furniture designer Valentin Loellman’s handcrafted interiors in a traditional worker’s cottage on the Maas river to fiber artist Claudy Jongstra’s farmhouse in Friesland where indigo dye plants grow in the biodynamic garden, Coming Home illustrates fun ideas and easy ways to incorporate individual style into your surroundings. Whether it’s the traditional “lowlands” aesthetic of combining old and new, faded and inviting, into a casual chic or a quirky reinvention of a space that reveals a touch of eccentricity, this book illustrates why the Netherlands is truly loved by so many and can be an inspiration to us all.

About the Author:

Barbara de Vries was born in Amsterdam. She has spent most of her career as a designer in the fashion business and in 1991, she created the CK collections at Calvin Klein and subsequently had her own collections in the U.S. and Japan. In 2009, Barbara and her husband, author Alastair Gordon, founded Gordon de Vries Studio, an imprint that publishes illustrated books on design and lifestyle. She is also a passionate anti-plastic-pollution activist. When her twin daughters moved to the Netherlands to study design, Barbara saw her home country through their eyes and realized that the Dutch way of life had never really left her.
