For some time in the distant past, hand-lettering used to be a highly-regarded skill to master and was ubiquitous via publications and public signages. Although society relies heavily on keyboards and screens for communication today, a growing number of creative practitioners have been busy reviving the seemingly-lost art in recent years, in a bid to return the sincerity and warmth of the human touch to our predominantly digital lives. Brimming with character, hand-lettering serves as the bridge between old-school calligraphy and modern typography to bring nuance back into an age of uniformity.

As an update of the original release in 2017, the ‘Handstyle Lettering’ 2022 edition rereleased in conjunction with Victionary’s 20th anniversary is a delightful showcase of artworks from around the world that are anything but unvaried. With an additional selection of new projects, the book also features insightful interviews from the best calligraphers as well as an expanded, beginner-friendly guide/practice area.

Author Bill Rose, Introduction by Mike Essl
ID: 14052
Издательство: Universe

A graphic compendium of vintage American design and typography.

Junk Type is a project driven by the passion of one man to document a disappearing aspect of American culture. Bill Rose — aka Recapturist — is a photographer and designer who has spent the last decade traveling across America looking for junkyards, yard sales, antique stores, and other unlikely sources of inspiration to capture examples of postwar American typography and design before they’re lost forever.

Bringing together more than 400 images, this invaluable book is a visual history of postwar America, told through the distinct typography, icons, badges, and branding of the country’s industrial heritage. From Art Deco-inspired fonts and unique handmade cursive lettering to illustrated insignia and clean graphic logos bearing the influence of European design of the 1960s, these pictures together represent an encyclopedic reference of creative typefaces and graphics.

With each photograph representing just a detail — an embossed logo, a specially created icon, or an advertising slogan — this book captures the optimism and pragmatism of a golden age of American industrial creativity and distills it into a charming resource for anyone with an eye (or nostalgia) for vintage design.

About the Author:

Bill Rose is a photographer who documents vintage Americana through his successful website Recapturist. Based in Minneapolis, he travels the country and specializes in neon signs and the typography and logo design of vintage American industrial objects.

_Method by specialist in the field
_Development of new idea of handwriting
_To find own way and own set of rules after understanding how it works
_Eight chapters with practical exercises to be done in the book

Although handwriting is one of mankind’s greatest cultural achievements, written communication today consists mostly of typing into computers and mobile devices. Monica Dengo addresses herself to all those who don’t even use pen and paper for their shopping list, but would like to try using them (again).

This book discovers and promotes the creative potential of handwriting – and allows to put it into practice right away on the pages of the book. Well-founded and very colorful, inspiring and yet structured: in the end, there is the joy of expressing oneself with a personal touch and the understanding that writing is much more than just the graphic transcription of language extending all the way to the origin of the need for expression.

Lettering is the art of “drawing” letters or words, highlighting their imperfections and free style

This technique, which has been in use for several decades, is currently enjoying wide popularity thanks to its many talented exponents worldwide, including Tobias Hall, Craig Black, Martina Flor, Ivan Castro, Betrayer Family, Tobias Saul, Sergio Jiménez and others. We can find Lettering decorating the interiors of bars and restaurants, the windows displays of top stores, advertising campaigns etc.

The book is divided into two parts; in the first half each artist has selected examples of their work and discussed their influences and early career, while in the second half each of them provides a new piece of work, talking us through the creative and production process, step by step, from the initial idea and sketch, explaining how the dimensions were worked out and the letters combined to ultimately form a harmonious message.

This is a complete book for all lovers of the art, and those who want to take a glance at the wonderful world of Lettering.

The definitive typographic exploration of the letter forms and typography of one of Europe’s leading design studios

Letters from M/M (Paris) is a comprehensive study of the typefaces produced by Michaël Amzalag and Mathias Augustyniak since they founded their influential art and design practice, M/M (Paris).

For the first time, ninety of the designers’ typefaces are catalogued chronologically in a three-part volume, comprising the history of their development; exclusive type specimens; and detailed illustrations of projects in which they appear.

With a foreword by Björk – whose collaboration with M/M spans over two decades – this encyclopaedic volume traces the distinctive and integral nature of type, lettering and signs in the work of M/M, from one-off artistic commissions to fashion branding and their long-lasting collaborations with musicians and theatres.

This complete typographic collection is the perfect companion to the two-volume monograph M to M of M/M (Paris), and will appeal not only to graphic designers, historians and students, but to anyone interested in art and visual culture.

About the Author:

Paul McNeil is a graphic designer, writer and educator, and was formerly Course Director of MA Contemporary Typographic Media at the London College of Communication. In 2009 he co-founded MuirMcNeil with Hamish Muir, a design practice whose activities are focused on exploring systematic methods in design for visual communication. Seven years in the making, The Visual History of Type, McNeil's definitive survey of type and typography from 1450-2015, was published in 2017.

Since the end of the 19th century, our aesthetics have been challenged by various avant-garde artistic ideas, especially astounded by the chaotic visuals. But there are many more stories behind the chaos in art. This book digs into chaotic art heritage in human history, and features the most exciting graphic designs distinguished with chaotic styles, which have been broken down into four different approaches: distortion, redundancy, diversity, and randomness. As a tribute to the chaotic art refined by the courageous predecessors, as well as an applause to the chaotic visuals nourished by our contemporary designers, it serves as a bridge between artistic ideals and graphic communication, between puzzled readers and expressive designers.

Claudia Walde
ID: 8349
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A unique typographical sourcebook featuring over 150 specially designed, original alphabets exclusive to this book

Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets.

Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from thirty countries to show the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world-renowned, such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa), and Hera (Germany); others are lesser-known or only now starting to emerge.

Each artist received the same instructions: design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them, and the results encompass not just street art but sketches, sculpture, digital art, and photography.

This highly original book will inspire fans of street culture as well as typographers, graphic designers, advertising and communication students and design professionals worldwide.

Contents List:

Hand lettering is making a comeback, bursting out of its graphic-design bubble and finding a mainstream via collecting social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest. Showcasing more than 100 artists from all over the world, the book displays their typographic takes and illustrates their perfectly imperfect handcrafted art, from beautiful photographs of concept sketches to the end result.
