A monograph on leading South African architecture studio SAOTA.

Light Space Life is the first monograph from the internationally recognised South African architecture studio SAOTA, known for crafting exceptional modern buildings that forge powerful connections to their extraordinary settings. Presenting memorable and distinctive residences selected from its wide-ranging global output, the book celebrates thirty-five years of innovative residential design from Lagos to Los Angeles, including houses from the dramatic South African coast where it all began.

SAOTA is led by Stefan Antoni, Philip Olmesdahl, Greg Truen, Philippe Fouché, Mark Bullivant and Logen Gordon, and has designed luxury residential and commercial projects on six continents. With reference to South African Modernism, and a grounding in the International style, its projects take advantage of wildly beautiful settings, and are rooted in place by the relationship between the building and its site. The practice cites spirit of enquiry and close examination of function and form as hallmarks of its work, as well as the use of the most current technology, including virtual reality, in its design processes.

This monograph features twenty-three recent residential projects from around the world, with a particular focus on Africa, illustrated with colour photography and including a foreword by SAOTA’s client Reni Folawiyo, founder of the West African fashion label, Alara.

Their function as a link between two or more places over otherwise impassable obstacles distinguishes bridges from all other types of structures or buildings. In the history of mankind, they have evolved with a great variety of profiles and construction menthods. Today, new technologies allow the implementation of projects with previously unattainable shapes and sizes.

Link it! features projects that combine sophisticated engineering skills with demanding esthetic concepts. It includes the work of established specialists as well as designs that were created by architects who usually focus on other sectors. The lives of 40 men and women behind some of the world’s most exciting gardens.

Throughout history great gardeners have risen from all walks of life. Some have been aristocratic amateur gardeners, others professional designers with an international practice. Some have come to garden-making from sister arts such as sculpture or painting; others have been hands-on nurserymen or botanists. What they all have in common is the ability to take an idea and develop it in a new manner relevant to their times.

About the Author:

Stephen Anderton is a journalist, author, lecturer and broadcaster. Best known as The Times’s long-standing writer on gardens and gardening (for which he has three times won first prize in the Garden Writers’ Guild awards), he worked for many years on the care and restoration of historic gardens, latterly as National Gardens Manager for English Heritage. His books include Discovering Welsh Gardens and Christopher Lloyd: His Life at Great Dixter.

'Living Buildings' celebrates the 50th anniversary of Donald Insall Associates, the firm led by British architect Donald Insall. Responsable for the restoration of Windsor Castle after a fire in 1992, Insallís preservation architecture has given longevity to Britainís stately homes, town halls, churches, entire city precincts, hospitals, royal palaces, castles, public buildings and public spaces.

In 1958, Insall and several of his colleagues founded a famous architectural practice in England based on architectural conservation, that is, the salvation, restoration, and rehabilitation of historic buildings and neighborhoods. (In the United States, this practice is called historic preservation.) This book commemorates these 50 years of professional practice, mostly in England, involving some of the United Kingdom's most cherished historic resources (e.g., Windsor Castle, Somerset House, and Covent Garden).

Divided into two sections, the book covers assessing, analyzing, planning, and implementing individual restoration projects ("Organizing the Project") and daily maintenance through radical rehabilitation to contextual new construction ("Degrees of Intervention").

Containing over 600 luxurious color maps, photos, and plans of a wide variety of projects in England, this work could easily serve as a textbook for a beginner's course in historic preservation. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.
