From the creative team behind Stone comes another comprehensive study of one of nature's greatest decorating materials: wood. Both an inspirational style guide and a technical manual, Designing a Home with Wood features this fundamental element in every imaginable adaptation: carved entryways, ornate moldings, inlaid floors, beamed ceilings, kitchen cabinetry, and more.
Extensively illustrated with more than 250 full-color photographs, it is sure to inform the professional contractor as well as the do-it-yourselfer.
The book is divided into four sections:
Part 1 identifies the types of wood utilized in interiors, including domestic species like oak, pine, and cedar; exotic varieties like bamboo, cork, and teak; and reclaimed pieces from barn siding, abandoned buildings, and antique furniture.
Part 2 suggests the many ways wood can be employed throughout the house, and spotlights accents like wainscoting and shutters.
Part 3 describes different styles, stains, and finishes of wood, along with how-to instructions for creating your own specialized effects.
Part 4 offers an appendix on purchasing and maintaining wood surfaces - well as a complete section of “stain-and-grain” swatches. Meticulously researched and magnificently presented, this is the indispensable reference for using wood in home decor.

Add an exquisite flourish of design to your beloved green space or garden by adding tiny fairy homes inter-woven with nature. Fairy Houses gives you the instruction and inspiration you need to start!
Have you ever seen a real fairy house? Not the ceramic ones at cavernous home improvement stores, but a real fairy house made from natural elements? Well, now you can build your own miniature magical abode - the perfect addition to your garden.
Step-by-step instructions for constructing exquisite fairy houses are revealed in Fairy Houses, explained by master fairy house architect Sally Smith. Smith has been creating one-of-a-kind DIY fairy houses out of natural artifacts for years, now she passes her miniature construction knowledge to you.
Imagine, a fairy garden with homes that have butterfly wings as stained-glass windows, twigs for window frames, birch bark for walls, dried mushrooms for shingles; it's all possible with a little instruction and inspiration from Fairy Houses.
Begin by flipping through an inspiration gallery, find which elements appeal to you, and how they fit together. From there, you’ll learn about building materials (found and natural), on-site fairy house construction, and how to light a fairy house.
About the Author:
Sally J. Smith is an environmental artist and photographer living in Westport, New York, on the edge of the Adirondacks. This locale lends itself to Sally's inspiration as she creates magical, mysterious, and marvelous "faerie" houses made from real leaves, moss and stone (and many other natural materials) as well as the stunning sculptures the artist calls "Eartherials" which echo the beauty of a special place or moment in time. Sally Smith's work is regularly featured in the calendar world, as well as The New York Times feature "Leave Your Wings at the Door". Sally is also the subject of the PBS's, Sally Smith: The Fairy Queen, which aired on "Roadside Adventures".

Showcasing one hundred years of innovation and environmental sensitivity, Handmade Houses celebrates some of the world’s most idiosyncratic homes from Big Sur to Sardinia. Author Richard Olsen unveils the components used for their construction, including driftwood, boulders, and even old wine vats.
The first study of the handmade-homes phenomenon since its inception in the late 1960s, Handmade Houses revisits the subject’s roots and history, exploring how these homes and their owners paved the way for the architectural-salvage business and the reclaimed, industrial look ever-popular today. As fascinating as the structures are themselves, their owners — professionals and amateurs who personally designed and built each residence — offer their inspirations and stories behind the convention-defying homes. Design lessons are gleaned from each home — some examples of environmentally aware construction with applicable tips for use in more mainstream scenarios.
Handmade Houses is an important and relevant volume to be appreciated by anyone interested in environmentally friendly design, craft, and the expression of personal style in the home.

Lake|Flato Architects of San Antonio, Texas, is nationally and internationally acclaimed for buildings that respond organically to the natural environment. The firm uses local materials and workmanship, as well as a deep knowledge of vernacular traditions, to design buildings that are tactile and modern, environmentally responsible and authentic, artful and crafted.
Lake|Flato won the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2013, and it has also received the American Institute of Architects’ highest honor, the National Firm Award. In all, Lake|Flato has won more than 150 national and state design awards.
Residential architecture has always been a priority for the firm, and Lake|Flato Houses showcases an extensive selection of landmark homes built since 1999.
Color photographs and architectural commentary create a memorable portrait of houses from Texas to Montana. Reflecting the firm’s emphasis on designing in harmony with the land, the houses are grouped by the habitats in which they’re rooted—brushland, desert, hillside, mountains, city, and water. These groupings reveal how Lake|Flato works with the natural environment to create houses that merge into the landscape, blurring boundaries between inside and outside and accommodating the climate through both traditional and cutting-edge technologies.
The sections are opened by noted architect and educator Frederick Steiner, who discusses Lake|Flato’s unique responses to the forms and materials of the various landscapes. An introduction by journalist Guy Martin summarizes the history of Lake|Flato and its philosophy, and explores the impact of its work on sustainable architecture.
This stylish volume takes us high into the exclusive world of mountain chalets.
They are dream houses which offer a blend of majestic nature, traditional architecture, and individualistic design or sanctuaries from the over-scheduled and chaotic world below. Offering exclusive, upscale living, these refuges are located in the shadow of magnificent peaks. Expansive walls of glass open onto views of picturesque mountain landscapes. Inside are unique interiors composed of antiques, furs, and found items from nature, art, and design. Their interiors offer a welcoming and cozy space to relax or socialize after winter sports or Alpine strolls.
Most notable, perhaps, is the role landscape plays in the design of these dramatic dwellings. Set against hillside views and picturesque valleys, furniture, materials, and artwork take on new vitality — regardless of whether the style is rustic and traditional or altogether more sleek and modern. Yet, although varied in ambience, all these chalets share an awareness of texture, scale, and light that creates a unifying sense of ease and grace.
In this volume, Gisela Rich, a connoisseur of the sophisticated chalets of St. Moritz, offers a glimpse of worlds sure to enrich the reader’s own sense of style.
- The finest mountaintop residences from Aspen to St. Moritz
- An insider look at some of the world’s best conceived and curated living space
In times when environmental awareness is increasing, wood is an attractive alternative to other mineral based or manufactured materials.
The production of wood products uses less energy (usually sourced from finite fossil fuels) compared with other materials and new technologies continuously push the boundaries of traditional woodworking methods.
When it comes to construction, wood houses can be prefabricated and built more quickly than their counterparts in brick and concrete.
Furthermore, there is no doubt about the comfortable atmosphere that wood lends to a home!
Wood is a modern material and in the design world, it is a force to be reckoned with.

Long considered the apotheosis of rustic kitsch, the log house actually has a rich architectural pedigree. Since the late 19th century, a surprising number of architects, along with their artisan-builder counterparts, have transformed the simple pioneer log cabin into a supremely crafted work of high art. Log Houses of the World is the first-ever chronological survey of the greatest examples of log houses designed in Europe and the United States from 1890 to the present. Included are photographs, plans, and little-known drawings - most never before published - from such celebrated Modern-era architects as Eliel Saarinen, Adolf Loos, Le Corbusier, Richard Neutra, and others. The result is both a remarkable tour of some superbly crafted homes, and an important vehicle for garnering for these houses the popular recognition, critical and otherwise, that they deserve.
