With its sun-drenched sands and Mediterranean waters, Sicily has been a favoured destination of travellers for centuries. History is alive on this island, from ancient accounts of the Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans; to the journals of wealthy young European men embarking on the Grand Tour. This book captures the sun-steeped aesthetic of the island, while detailing the restoration of one of its finest attractions: the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palace.

Marquis de Castelluccio was one of the last “servals” or “leopards” of Sicily – wealthy aristocrats who flooded the island with luxury. Following his death, his home fell to ruin. A half-century later, Jean-Louis Remilleux fell in love with this dilapidated 18th-century palace and made it his mission to restore it. Unveiled for the first time in this beautifully illustrated book, the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palazzo is one of the finest testaments to Sicilian architecture and art.

Today, lush green palm trees welcome you to the palace’s imposing front façade. Frescoes, arabesques, masks, imitation marble, ceilings and wainscoting have all restored to their former glory, over decades of elaborate work. This book charts the restoration process and celebrates the astonishing end results. It contains an album’s worth of photographs that capture the beauty of this palace beneath the Mediterranean sun.

About the Author:

Jean-Louis Remilleux is the television producer behind “Secrets d’Histoire”, a popular French show that delves into mythical characters from history. He has authored several interview books with figures such as Jacques Vergès and Michel Serrault. In addition to the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palace, his passion for art and history has led him to restore the castle of Groussay, in Montfort l’Amaury, and the castle of Digoine, in Burgundy. He is an “Honorary Citizen” of Noto, where the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palace is located.

A survey of the full breadth and complexity of Mexican art history, ranging widely across genres and offering new interpretations of painting, sculpture, architecture, prints and photographs

This new interpretive history of Mexican art and architecture from the Spanish Conquest to the early decades of the twenty-first century is the most comprehensive introduction to the subject in fifty years.

The author ranges widely across media and genres, offering new readings of paintings, murals, sculptures, buildings, prints and photographs. He interprets major works by such famous artists as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, but also discusses less familiar figures who were equally important in the construction of national identity.

The story of Mexican art is set in its rich historical context by the book’s treatment of political and social change. The author draws on recent scholarship to examine crucial issues of race, class and gender, including an exploration of the work of indigenous artists during the colonial period, and of women artists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Throughout, Oles shows how artists in Mexico participated in local and international developments, and highlights the important role played by Mexicans in the art world of the last five centuries.

Mass housing and urban planning are a key element in North Korea’s material foundation. In the post-war era, the country attempted to socialise all types of living spaces – from small apartment rooms to urban settings – based on political ideology. The idea that North Korea’s political forces are brainwashing their people is superficial – as testimonies from many defectors have revealed.

By exploring home culture and daily life, this book aims to capture the actual life of North Koreans, who have largely supported the country’s unique dictatorial political system.
To this end, it uses drawings, maps, and diagrams obtained from various archives. While these are neutral forms of communication, they also convey the actual intentions of North Korean architects and planners hidden behind the deceitful claims of political leaders.

· The reconstruction of Pyongyang and Hamhŭng
· Piotr Zaremba and the urban planning of Chongjin
· The creation of Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang
· The emergence of mass housing in Post-War North Korea
· The introduction of microdistricts in site planning
· Socialisation of rural space in North Korea
· The planning of Gwangbok Street New Town in Pyongyang
· The development of the housing market

An interior design guide to creating English country house style wherever you may dwell, from property expert Katy Campbell and acclaimed photographer Mark Nicholson

The authors of At Home in the Cotswolds return with a new book full of English charm and style savvy. English Country House Style explores the signature rooms and furnishings that are synonymous with this comfortable, sumptuously lived-in look.

There are certain motifs unique to English country houses. These may be specific rooms, architectural details, decorative flourishes, or arrangements of furniture, but all are unmistakably synonymous with that peculiar and lovely ideal that is the English home in the countryside. These features are not solely the preserve of large country houses. Many can be found in country cottages as well as stately homes, and most can be recreated by modern homeowners in their own dwellings in urban, suburban, and rural environments.

This book explores the iconography of the English country house and lifts the curtain on its interior design secrets, with more than a dozen chapters on various country house motifs, each illustrated with photographs taken in private country homes throughout England. From the boot room to the butler’s pantry, from the library drinks table to the kitchen AGA, each chapter unpacks all the little design details for readers who are eager to make the look their own—or simply wish to enjoy a peek at English country life.

A glorious, intimate homage to this magical country from bestselling photographer and writer Miguel Flores-Vianna

A land immortalized by poets for its otherworldly beauty, Greece is the birthplace of iconic monuments that are known the world over. Yet, at the same time, it is also home to an organic architectural language, the product of centuries of rural and island lifestyles — it is the heir both to the timelessness of classical architecture and the simplicity of rustic living.

This stunning volume chronicles Miguel Flores-Vianna’s photographic odyssey through the beautiful Greek landscape, showcasing historical houses alongside contemporary homes, united by the colorful characters who either live or have lived in these places — the “haute bohemians”.

From the sophisticated residences of collectors and painters to island hideaways, centuries-old tavernas, royal follies, breathtaking gardens and even a restored sailboat, Flores-Vianna transports his armchair travel companions to a wondrous world, bathed in the glow of an ethereal light. An extraordinary range of characters emerges — including historic figures such as the shepherd Alexandros Rodakis and Queen Amalia, and contemporary creatives such as antique dealer Eleni Martinou and architect Katerina Tsigarida. Featured, too, are the homes of international residents who share a passion for this magical land, such as interior designer John Stefanidis, artists Helen and Brice Marden, and financier and philanthropist Jacob Rothschild.

A self-confessed “Hellenophile” who has visited Greece countless times since his childhood, Flores-Vianna invites us to join him in paying tribute to his beloved adopted nation, capturing the character and patina of this enchanting country through his trademark intimate, atmospheric photography, and engaging texts.

About the Author:

Miguel Flores-Vianna has been a photographer, writer, and editor for more than 20 years. Light, airy, and clear — Danish single-family homes set standards

The human being was at the center of Danish Modernism. Traditional craftsmanship and a high degree of quality influenced both design and architecture. Besides numerous groundbreaking public buildings, the fifties and sixties saw the design of many nearly ideal single-family homes based on an aesthetic that focused on being true to the materials, honesty in construction, and the reduction of form. Built of wood and brick and with practical, informal floor plans and large glass surfaces that opened up the interior of the house to nature, the best of these homes still fulfill their tasks to this day.

This is a compendium of selected buildings in detail, including icons such as Utzon House by Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen’s Siesby House, or the Bøgh Andersen House by Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. It includes new, four-color photographs that document the buildings as well as discussions on the history of each one’s design and construction. Biographies of the architects round out the volume.

A unique photographic survey of the best architecture in Switzerland, showcasing the nation’s advanced engineering, superlative craftsmanship and stunning natural scenery

Established on the global stage by the international success and influence of architects such as Peter Zumthor and Herzog & de Meuron, today’s generation of architects in Switzerland draws on the country’s distinctive landscape of alpine peaks, crystalline lakes and efficient cities, and fuses traditional Swiss materials with new high-tech tools and innovative construction methods.

New Swiss Architecture documents fifty of the most important buildings of the last decade through architectural photographs that highlight their exceptional detail, attention to context and material experimentation. Because of their isolated locations, many of these buildings are little known, despite having been designed by leading architects, including Christ & Gantenbein, Gigon/Guyer, Valerio Olgiati, Charles Pictet, Richter Dahl Rocha and Diener & Diener. The book is presented in two sections: the first comprises a photographic portfolio of projects organized into themes: Alpine, Infrastructural, Recreational, Rural, Suburban, Urban. The second section describes each of the featured buildings through drawings, plans and concise texts.

Produced for design aficionados, this lavish publication will attract architecture practitioners and students seeking inspiration from work produced at the most sophisticated level.

Reveals why everyone feels at home in a Scandinavian interior.

If the goal were to build a house in which everyone would like to live, the architect would likely be Italian, the engineer maybe German, the gardener probably British, and the craftspeople either Swiss or Japanese. The interior designer of that house, though, should— beyond any doubt — be from Scandinavia.

Hardly any other interior or product design is so timeless, so functional, so aesthetic, and of such high quality as that of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. Throughout the years, countless pieces of furniture, objects, and buildings from Scandinavia have become icons of international design and architecture. A current generation of designers from these countries is consciously building upon local sustainable design traditions and further developing them in a way that is consistent, intelligent, and reflects an unerring sense of style.

In Northern Delights, design classics meet young talents, individual products meet skillfully staged living spaces. The book’s stunning selection of work reveals what makes Scandinavian design so exceptional. The included examples show how the grains of different woods, the clarity of colored glass, the cheery colors of fabrics and patterns, and the overall quality of craftsmanship contribute to creating simple, inviting, and very comfortable living spaces.

Northern Delights offers inspiration to designers, architects, and individuals in equal measure. In a Scandinavian dwelling, everyone feels at home.

Old Cuba presents an insider’s view of the splendid colonial-era sites of the storied island nation, from the grand apartments and magnificent cathedral of Old Havana to the plantation homes of Pinar del Río.

Cuba dominates the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, fixed between the great continents to the north and to the south, and has long served as a bridge between the Old World and the New. First visited by Christopher Columbus in 1492, its history of interaction with the Old World of Europe is among the longest in the Americas, and its architecture bears testament to this: Cuba is home to some of the most ancient cities and towns in the western hemisphere. As a result, the country once known as the “pearl of the Antilles,” stands now as a treasure chest of alluring historic architecture — seasoned by European precedents mixed with colonial and Caribbean spice — and boasts an extraordinary number of UNESCO Cultural Heritage sites, from the historic center of Old Havana with its original city walls and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza — the oldest extant colonial fortress in the Americas — to the sixteenth-century city of Trinidad, within the central Cuban province of Sancti Spíritus, recognized by historians and scholars as a triumph of historic preservation and whose maze of pastel mansions and churches forms one of the best collections of colonial architecture to be found anywhere.

From Old Havana to Santiago de Cuba, Old Cuba offers an intimate look at the historic architecture — the houses, apartments, monuments, charming public spaces, and centuries-old churches — of this storied country.

Scandinavia Dreaming illustrates today’s evolving story of Nordic design: one that is equal parts elegance, function, and tradition.

The nuanced realm of Nordic design has two personalities. On one side, there sits the open, light, friendly, and democratic constituent. And, on the other hand, is its moody counterpart: sleek and sophisticated; timeless and traditional; and deeply rooted in the sensations and juxtapositions of nature.  Within the lines of tile-covered roofs born from the existence of nearby clay deposits and large windows that let in light during the shorter winter days, insight into this special thread of skilled craftsmanship awaits. Scandinavia Dreaming presents dazzling interiors, architecture, and products that show the richness, variety, and intensity of contemporary Nordic spaces.

Artisans fresh from design school breathe new life into the wonted usage of tile, wood, glass, ceramics, and other customarily Nordic materials. Profiles of brands and personalities that have influenced and, arguably, brought Nordic threads to the forefront of design conversations, tell an intriguing story: an aesthetic and historic journey through a vast world of style and heritage. Design firms such as Hay, Ferm Living, and Frama are highlighted and extolled for the new layer of warmth and energy that they bring to contemporary Danish design while honoring Scandinavian aesthetics and a space’s need to be both livable and logical. Finnish home textiles by Klaus Haapeniemi and Kustaa Saksi prove that the categories of art and décor are not mutually exclusive. Be it the painstaking searches of Copenhagen’s Gubi design house for neglected furniture that needs a well-honed touch before becoming pieces of the current design narrative or the tantalizing sculptures of Oslo-based designers Kneip that illustrate and investigate the phenomena of nature whilst reflecting the gentle coexistence of Nordic architecture with its surroundings, there exists a seamless pairing of the aesthetic and the historical within this iconic tale of design.

The projects within Scandinavia Dreaming translate to any four walls and readily invite transformation from page to reality. Told through anecdotes from those who live in them and from those who exist in other sectors of the creative community, Scandinavia Dreaming tells of a design school that has a worldwide reputation for its effortless combination of classical restraint and warm materials.

Window on the world. Travelling the world with an architect's eye

Architect Harry Seidler spent more than 50 years travelling the globe, extensively photographing the peak achievements in architecture from 3000 B.C. to the present day. Thanks to sound advice given to him early on by his photographer brother Marcell (“Only use Leica cameras and Kodachrome film, which is archival”), Seidler’s hobby quickly developed into a passion and, finally, an impressive archive of world architecture.

Including, of course, many of the world’s most famous architectural structures, Seidler’s photographs illustrate the history and style — country by country — of architecture in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Divided into chapters by country, each with a brief introduction outlining its architectural history, The Grand Tour offers armchair travellers, students, architecture buffs, and historians the opportunity to browse the buildings of the world through one man’s photographs —the fruits of a passionate, half-century endeavour.

About the Author:

Born in Vienna, Austria, Harry Seidler studied architecture at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg before winning a scholarship to Harvard, where he studied under Walter Gropius. He also studied under Josef Albers at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and was the chief assistant of Marcel Breuer in New York from 1946 to 1948. He worked with Oscar Niemeyer in Rio de Janeiro before opening his own practice in Sydney in 1949. He has taught at the Harvard School of Design, the ETH in Zurich, and the University of Sydney. In 1996, Seidler was awarded the RIBA gold medal. He died on March 9, 2006.
